View Full Version : Laptop Battery Help - will 4400 mAh work under 3500 mAh?

I'll cut to the chase.
I can log in however once i do I receive a prompt which says "replace the battery with a new one". The ones on eBay under the VPCEB31FD series are listed with a different mAh. The one that came with my laptop is 3500 mAh and the ones on only ebay are 4400 mAh. If I buy it will it work without frying my computer or should I just completely avoid it?
Any idea aside from ordering it directly from Sony where I could buy it?
Thanks
Diego

Try this site: Clicky (http://www.battdepot.com/ca/)
These guys are fast and based out of BC and can normally source you with a battery that is same as OEM or better. I purchased one with a 3 year warranty.

eBay is notorious for batteries that have much higher mAh than what the cell really holds. What SonicBoy suggested may cost a little more but you won't get an exploding defective cell or one that is actually 500 mAh.

To answer your question, the mah rating is for the capacity of the battery, the higher just means it'll last longer. What's important is the voltage the battery is at. Look on your current battery and it should indicate, if it matches with the ebay one and it indicates that it is a replacement for that model, then it should work no problem.
The difference in capacity could be ebay sellers over estimating or battery technology since has improved, thus more capacity.
I would recommend going to their store, see the battery in person.

UPDATE:
So I went there this morning and they only offer aftermarket batteries. Both models which they provided did not work with my computer. The person at the front desk mentioned that the issue could be internally. Now I'm trying to wonder whether I should get a Sony battery or whether I should take it in (somewhere which i don't have the slightest idea where) and get it sorted out.
Anyone want to fix my laptop?

That could indicate that it isn't really your battery that's dying, but the charging circuit or part of the motherboard that monitors/chargers the battery is broken.

Alright let's say its that however any idea as to where I should take it to get it looked at? Don't really want to take it to a FS/BB. The rear metal pronges (if you wanna call it that) where the battery engages to the laptop are all straight.

Given what has transpired, try using a different power brick to see if this solves the problem. Maybe find one at Canada Computers?
If not, I believe there is a battery place on Front Street that sells batteries and also tests your laptop for charging issues.
The TechKnow Space
387 Front Street W
Toronto, ON M5V 3S8

P.S. I've never used them but was going to when I had battery issues. Luck for me a new battery fixed the problem.

Just came back from there store and they mentioned that I must get a genuine Sony battery. It should run me $150-$200.
I'm gonna order a battery this coming week from Sony itself see how it goes. Should I check anything before I go ahead and order it?

what's the spec of the laptop? Might be better to just buy a new laptop.

+1
Given the price of the battery, it's almost half to a 3rd of a new machine that is probably faster and more up to date.

I was discussing the exact thing with my wife last night that its almost better to buy a new one and then take the old hard drive from the other and transfer it.
We were kinda thinking just to buy another Sony vaio but was wondering if my current hard drive would be compatible as through the device manager it's statins its a Samsung HM500JI and I'm assuming its a SATA as the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers are saying that.
Specs:
Intel Pentium cpu P6100 @ 2ghz, 500gb hdd
Nothing special I agree. The VC is integrated directly onto the motherboard so it's just mainly those specs.
I'm thinking I'll call Sony and verify what the exact price will be along with shipping and then go from there. What do you guys think?

I think you better buy the new laptop then transfer all the data to the new one. One thing, you have forgot when you replace new battery and the laptop has another problem then end up it will cost you more.
Break down for the part, I assume you can upgrade these components for your old laptop:
New battery cost $200 (assume)
Windows 8 $100
Another 8gb memory $60
Total cost $360 without warranty
New laptop from $400 and up depend the configuration you want and 1 year warranty. Dell has on sale $380 for core I3 Intel last time.
I'm assuming its a SATA as the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers are saying that.
You can buy USB external dual hard drive for transfer the data. I think it cost around $35

We were looking around and you're right it goes for that. We're gonna just end up buying another computer.
Thanks for your help once again.

Or connect both laptops via wifi, or cross over cable, share the drive and transfer your data. I believe Win 8 has migration tools built in.
