I purchased a set of rear pads from a forum member. HPS Hawk Part No: HB478F.605

I took that to a mechanic today and they told they it was the wrong part and could not install it. They said the clip is supposed to be on the back and not the top of the pads.

I then called Hawk Performance and showed them the parts, confirmed the part number and everything was indeed correct.

Can any mechanic tell me if these pads can be installed or not??

Any help from someone that knows how to install these pads themselves would be greatly appreciated. :)

BTW, I drive a 2006 Mazda 3 2.0i.

The representative at Hawk made a good point. He said that he opened a box on his end and its exactly the same as the one I have. They have been making this for over 7 years.. there's no way they could be making the wrong part for this many years and no one said anything about it. I'm really starting to question the two local mechanics that I went to. Too bad Jimmy was super booked today. I should have gone to ask him.

The 2004-2005 rear brake pads had a spring clip that squeezed onto the rear caliper piston... You can see the old style pad in this link:

Mazda changed the pad to the one you have from Hawk some time in 2006.

The pad you have in the pic is interchangeable and you can use it even if your car came with the older spring clip one.

FYI

Yet another reason to stick to OEM parts.

MajesticBlueNTO you say that Hawk style clip is for 2006+ models.

I have stock pads on 2008 Mazda like the ones int he forum thread.

Good to know.

I have a 2008 MS3, which uses the same rear brake pads as the regular 3, and the OEM rear brake pad from the factory looked like the Hawk one.

Another person i know has a 2007 3, factory rear pad was the one like the Hawk.
Bottom line is that they're interchangeable.
