On the ownership, it has my name and my dad\'s (co-owner) name on it. It has some \"unusual\" number for R.I.N. rather than a driver\'s license number.

What is RIN? Where does it come from?

The RIN is a system generated number. You yourself have a system generated licence number (one entity), your father has one too (another entity). However, when both of you enter a dual owner relationship, like that of your car, the system has to create a third RIN (registrant identification number)...a third entity. Although they are linked, it\'s easier to enter the 7 digit, dual ownership RIN, than to enter both licence numbers all of the time when registering vehicles under the dual ownership RIN.
