View Full Version : Front Strut Disconnected (maybe broken) from Upper Mount, What Do I Do?!

Hi guys,

So realized today while driving that my suspension has been really hard on bumps. When I got home discovered my front right strut is disconnected from the top engine mount where it holds it. The tire is caved into the wheel well.

What do I do?!

Should I take off the wheel and try to somehow fix it, do i take it to a mechanic? How much can this cost me? Should I be driving the car?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

thanks for breaking my neck LOL.

but honestly, it looks like the top hat gave out and its time to replace. best to get the front shock replaced as a whole unit instead of just the top hat

in other news, your 1/4 done in the process of hellaflushing your car lol

So by top hat and shocks, do u mean I will need basically new coilovers and all that?

front macpherson strut assembly. a replacement can be easily found at any part source. mind you, this is only assuming if everything else is fine.

you need this for front right:

if you can get the wheel off and get better pictures inside the wheel well, that would help a lot to asses the damage.

I might take the wheel off tomorrow but I'm scared I'll break something or not be able to lower it back down if i do so.

Also, would driving it to mechanic be smart or shud i tow it there?

in that case, he'll have to take the strut out and see if theres damage to the strut, springs, etc. if theres no damage then he can get away with just getting a new top hat.

by the pictures they look oem for winter

if your rubbing then tow it, if not limp it. if your going to take it to the mechanic theres no point in doing anything about it yourself right now. just get it to the shop and theyll take care of you

like i said, it could be just the top hat. or the entire assembly. gotta get the wheel off to check it for damage

why dont you just take it to a mechanic.. someone who knows what they are doing. and tow it. dont drive it.

Ya I am going to find out best shop to send it to. I need to figure out if I'm going to need new coilovers in general. If so, sounds like my car might be out of commission for a while.

the strut mount is broken and assuming the strut is still good, that's all you need to replace
part of it is a plastic POS... all the pieces that belong to it needs to be replaced

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR!!!
IT IS NOT SAFE!!

Ive had clunking coming from there for a few months now. But I noticed yesterday the suspension was really hard, especially from the left side, i checked but didnt really see anything wrong. (I'm only driving it about 3-5km a day). But today when i was driving it home, i noticed the suspension really really hard, from the smallest bump, so I checked the wheel and it was all crooked. So now I'm here.

Just to Update everyone: Car is fixed now.

Basically there was no existence of bearings on the upper strut mounts, so one was destroyed and the other one was on its way too. Long story short, had to get new upper strut mounts, and take off the coilovers and put it all back to stock. The coilovers are pretty damaged, dont think ill be able to recover them.

When the mechanic put it on the lift, the entire wheel fell, nothing was attached to the car. So things could of been ugly if i drove it or was on the highway.

Anyways thanks for the support guys!

Damn that sucks. Glad to see you got it all fixed up with no additional damages though. Driving in that condition clearly wouldn't have been a good idea.
