Environment Canada is calling for a significant ice storm from Friday through to Sunday for Southern Ontario.

20-50mm of freezing rain.

How are you going to get into your car after the storm dissipates?

With all the id!ot drivers out there in a rush to get nowhere fast, I'd be careful. A couple of cars already tried to pass me on the right lane as if I was driving slowly which I wasn't.

So it's not you who have snow tires that should be worried. We should be worried about these drivers with the wrong type tires thinking it's a summer day and you're holding them up.

I got the brunt of it leaving work last night at 1:30 and driving from Burlington to Guelph it was terrible. I couldn't see anything on Highway 6. Snow tires, 5spd manual, ABS and Windshield Washer Fluid. Helps do what you need to do in winter! I've been driving around Guelph all day and its been better but it could be alot worse. Travel in well lit and well travelled roads.

I work in Security drive a 2014 ford escape for work car, work all weekend this week i put at least around 300km a night on average. my speed usually around 130-140KM/H. i hate slow drivers and people that cant drive, i don't have time. lets see how this weekend is for me lol

Finished Driving back from york, bunch of fender benders, mostly still slush. My problem with winter driving is leaving a safe gap between me and the car ahead. People like to cut me off if I leave anything larger then 1,1/2 to 2 car lengths and I'm not driving slow. Its annoying to say the least.

I have the same problem.. I leave a gap and someone always cuts in thinking that gap was meant for them.. some people are a joke.

Just the other day, I was pulling out of a plaza and there were no cars in the lane closest to me so I started to pull out.. and this guy on the other lane decided to switch lanes at that exact time and nearly smashed into the front left side of my car.. what a freakin' bozo.. if he hit me, I don't know who'd get nailed for that.. him for the unsafe lane change or me for coming out into the empty lane..

+1!

I hate it when people do this to me... It also pains me when people always keep the same distance... regardless of conditions.

Also any word on exactly how much the GTA/misisauga area ( as well as areas north of the GTA) are getting. Enviroment canada isnt helping because they dont specify whos getting the biggest of the hit and who is just getting some rain but nothing major.

As for getting in my car..... Thank god I have the holidays off for now. Come monday morning Ill pull my car into the garage while my dad isnt home to get it thawed.... or if that doesnt work ill go through the local touchless wash.

Its brutal today. I drove from woodstock and visibility was next to nothing. Some people are in soo much hurry. I was nearly involved in fender bender as minivan driver tried to merge into my lane without blinkers and I was driving right next to him. Had to go into emergency shoulder lane to avoid it. How can you not look out of your left window to see if anyone is right next to you. He still didn't learnt and was going in and out of traffic like a mad man.

Everyone drive safe and stay safe.

Im going to go and hang out with some friends in missisauga tommorow and the weather aint stopping me. Ill just drive alot slower than usual and be more alert and ill be fine. The only thing that would stop me is if the roads were super slippery ( which isnt possible since with the amount of traffic driving over the road, ice wouldnt really build up as well... not to mention that the city is probably ready for this and will have the salt trucks in full force ( yes I just stated an advantage to using crap tons of salt )

I highly doubt it will be as bad as the one that happened back in the late 90s. I feel the media is overhyping it a bit. Not saying that you shouldnt drive slower , but rather not to cancel travel plans just because of a bit of freezing rain. Its Canada, we should be used to this stuff by now.... sadly not everyone is.

What I hate is when the media overhypes this stuff and in the end its nothing out of the ordinary.... I mean we live in Canada, we should be used to this stuff. They are treating it like its the worst storm ever to hit Toronto... I doubt its as bad as the one in the late 90s

Roads been closed for 3ish hours for investigation and someone has unfortunately lost their lives.

Although it hasn't been said on the news but it was a farm tractor that jackeknifed and the trailer full of bails of hay tipped over onto the front of the car.

I find it mostly just parking lots and every where you walk that's slippery since it's not enough traffic on the surfaces to keep them wet like the roads. It's not bad tho on the roads when I was out an hour ago in Brampton.

I'm just happy I'm not out driving. I got extremely irritated when I saw this guy with road rage earlier today. Rides my ass as I am staying distant and matching the speed of the guy ahead of me. I move over because even though he isn't going to get ahead I rather not be tailgated. Eventually he weaves in between traffic to get ahead of him, pulls in front then hits the brakes on the guy. :facepalm Never an acceptable thing to do, but today of all days?

Driver must be vying for a Darwin award! It's competitive this time of year. More serious note, I know what you mean. Idiocy of some drivers is beyond logic and belief. Aside from defensive driving maneuvers, I tend to avoid highways and country roads at all costs and stick to well lit and well traveled roads. Can only hope traffic volume and traffic lights manage speed at tolerable and safe levels.

Turn it on, turn front/rear defrosters on. Let idle for 10 mins every 4 hours if possible. Might help battery from going dead too, although it's not severely frigid outside. Make sure wipers are off before starting. Use wipers only when ice is slush. Don't bother touching paint.

Sit in front of it with a hair dryer....lol... if you don't have access of garage, nothing much you can do other than starting it every few hrs. Lucky we have no mature trees in my areas lol.. just little trees.. probably going to be no trees by morning.

I live in north york where there are a lot of old silver maples. there are Trees down everywhere, my neighbours behind me lost their jetta (totaled) to a huge tree branch. I can also hear branches snapping off outside from the weight of the ice.

Lots of comp claims come Monday. Good thing im off till the 3rd :D drive safe tomorrow.

Hydro crews are scurrying to restore power to thousands of customers across the GTA and southern Ontario as a burst of freezing rain sweeps through the province.
Hydro One said more than 31,000 customers throughout southern Ontario were without power as of 11:15 p.m. Saturday night.
Toronto Hydro said at least 8,500 of its customers were without power as well in scattered outages across the city.

"We expect taht number to grow overnight as we see more of the inclement weather," Christina Basil of Toronto Hydro told CP24 in a phone interview around midnight.
Basil said restoration times are currently estimated at 12 to 16 hours. She said Toronto Hydro would have an update on those projections at around 7 a.m. once the worst of the storm has passed.
The largest outage impacting the city is located in an area between York Mills and Lawrence, Victoria Park and Don Mills, Toronto Hydro said.
“Our main concern with freezing rain is the weight that it places on our overhead equipment and tree limbs and that kind of thing,” Basil told CP24 earlier Saturday. “If you spot a downed wire, always treat it as live, stay back at least 10 feet, and please report it to us.”
Reports of any downed wires can be made at 416-542-8000.
The wave of outages comes as a second burst of freezing rain sweeps through the province.
Much of southern and eastern Ontario, including Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, remain under a freezing rain warning from Environment Canada as the second of two bouts of freezing rain moves through the region.
“It’s going to be a very icy 12 hours,” CP24 Meteorologist Chris Potter said Saturday evening. “The bulk of the rain and freezing rain from the storm system will be moving in during the evening, through the overnight and clearing tomorrow morning.
Twenty to 30 mm of freezing rain is possible in some areas between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, Environment Canada said.
The expected storm system moves in after the region got a taste of the freezing rain from a separate storm system Friday night. That storm left many areas with slick sidewalks, slippery roads, and ice-covered trees and shrubs.
With many reports of downed power lines throughout the province, hydro and emergency officials are reminding people to stay away from potentially dangerous downed wires if they spot them. People should call police to report any downed wires, Hydro One said.
OPP urge caution on the roads
With surfaces expected to become icy, police are asking people to stay off the roads unless they absolutely have to drive.
Those who do venture out are advised to slow down on the roads and leave more time to reach their destinations.
“Only travel if you have to, but if you are on the roadways be very, very aware that you are dealing with ice you may not be able to see and it’s going to decrease your stopping distance greatly,” OPP Cst. Graham Williamson told CP24 in a phone interview.
OPP also warned that highway on and off ramps could be very slippery.
Ground, air transportation affected
City crews got busy salting the roads early Friday night and early Saturday in anticipation of the storm.
“We’ve been salting as much as we can yesterday evening and overnight,” Peter Noehammer, the city’s director of transportation services, told CP24 Saturday morning.
“We’ve been salting all of the road classifications in Toronto, especially our high-speed expressways and main roads,” he said.
While efforts will continue throughout the evening, Noehammer said people venturing out should be extra vigilant because of the conditions.
“I would remind people to be extra cautious,” he said.
The TTC also urged transit riders to use caution when getting on or off city vehicles and around subway stations.
Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday the TTC said shuttle buses were operating between St. Clair Station and St. Clair West Station tocompensate for streetcars that are delayed due to poor roadway conditions.
The messy weather comes on one of the busiest travel days of the year, with 112,000 travellers expected to pass through Pearson international Airport Saturday.
However the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said flights have not been dramatically impacted so far.
“So far there were some delays and changes to flights, but overall we’re seeing regular holiday travelling,” GTAA spokesperson Shereen Daghstani told CP24 Saturday afternoon.
Still, airlines are also asking customers flying to or from Toronto to check their flight status before heading to the airport in case of cancellations or delays.
The bad weather has also prompted the York Region and Peel District School Boards to cancel all permits for Sunday.
Power outage tips
•Unplug or turn off all appliances to avoid possible damage when power resumes.
•Turn off water to the clothes washer and dishwasher if they are in use when the power goes out.
•Leave a light or radio on so you will know when power is restored.
•When power has been restored, check all fuses to ensure that none have been blown, before calling Toronto Hydro.
•Plug in only the most essential appliances first, and wait 10 to 15 minutes to give the electrical system time to stabilize before connecting everything else.

Thank god I didnt go anywhere yesterday. From what ive seen bradfords response rate to this all is fairly slow. Bradford aint small anymore... we deffinately need more plows out there. That said my street has been plowed and the major streets here also have been plowed. No word on the 400 but hopefully It will be fine by the morning.

also keep in mind that traffic on the 400 at that time of night ... especially southbound.. is pretty low. Less traffic leads to less tires hitting the road which leads to more ice buildup.

Lost utility power in Exeter but was well prepared for it just by having extra gas on hand for the generator.

Flipped the transfer switch, fired the generator up, and it was business as usual. Just took a few hours to clear the downed trees on the property.

Yep, lots of damage here. I had a good 3/8 inch of ice over my entire car, but fortunately no tree branches fell on it, although one did decimate our hedge, and there is half a tree lying across the storage shed in the back yard.

Went for a walk a bit earlier today.... Still lots of people with no power, branches everywhere. Had to keep an eye out for branches that are only partially down... A lot more are going to come down when the ice thaws and they come unsure or branches un-freeze and break.

It's taking so long because when the trees come down and tear all the hydro lines down separate contractors like the one I work for have to come in and repair all the damage done to the conduit and the meter base, that's like 60k more people that have to hire electrical contractors to come repair the service, then all hydro does is spend 2 hours tops to reconnect your house to the line, in other cases it has to do with the grid and the street transformers but I think for the most part those are all out of the way.

Considering half the trees were probably planted 30-50 years ago I don't think you can blame planners. You could blame people who protect the trees from being cut down.

On the flip side lots of visitors to the city comment on how amazingly green it is; we often take all our trees for granted.

Foresight is a key component of planning... but yes 30-50 years ago city planners didn't have the knowledge (case studies) and education we have today.

Hate to say it, but City Planners are still dimwits (new or old)..

The reason I say that is because when new developments go up, it seems the cities never plan for the traffic down the road. They pave a 2 lane road with bike lanes, then re-pave it 3 years later so it's 4 lanes and bike lanes, then they tear it up again and re-pave it and make it 5 lines and bike lanes because they failed to take into account people turning left into drive-ways/plaza's. It's a joke and a complete waste of tax payer money. I would rather the city pay the expense for a 5 lane road on every major road in a city right away and deal with minimal traffic for a couple years over ripping up and re-paving a road 3-4 times in 10 years.

Sometimes things like this are done on purpose for GDP purposes. And to maintain funding budget, etc ("use it or loose it" rule that many government agency face).

If you ever dealt with a government organization from a business perspective, you'll know what I've mean. They'll usually scramble to spend/buy sh!t load of stuff at year end if they have a surplus budget. Because if they don't next year they'll get less in funding since the government thinks they don't need it anymore.

Zotaga
12-27-2013, 04:58 PM
Do a cost analysis of building a underutilized road for a decade vs re-building the same stretch of road 3-4 times in that same time frame.

As a tax payer, I'd rather see it underutilized than to waste millions and millions on re-doing the same stretch of road over and over again..

If the road is constructed the first time in a new development phase, it WILL have surrounding development.. so that's an invalid argument Mr. Wilson.

I'm not saying build roads 5 lane roads in the boonies that won't see development for decades.. I'm talking about main roads that are currently 2 lane, expanding into an area that has projected growth in 10 years that will see the need for a 5 lane road. Build it once rather than 3-4 times.

^^^ So mega roadways with no surrounding development should just be built and then underutilized for decades?

Dimwit.

I guess we can't blame hydro either: Wouldn't it be great to put all these wires overhead near these cool trees on these big tree trunks? Yes, great idea I think.

Not sure but in some neighbourhoods, are they now putting these wires underground? Or am I mistaken.

It's all about cost. At least that's what I was always told. It's funny how the provincial government has always been "efficient" aka cheap on useful and essential public services and programs but overly generous when it comes to bureaucracy...

Many municipalities already have in their bylaws/building code that utilities are to be placed underground. Not sure what T.O. has specifically, there's like 5 sets of existing bylaws within the City of.

Australia is all underground wiring I believe.

You want to hear about city planners? Any one every tried taking a 53' tractor trailer into a sub division and try to negotiate with traffic circles? WORST IDEA EVER!, or St Catharines where they believe its a crime to trim trees, they snap like like butter when they get wet.

My friends north of Campbelleville just got hydro back less then 24hours ago.

Hope you family is survivin Aitch.

One question,

How can I argue to build a road to what the assumed full build out is, that is underutilized and warrant it as a good use of public funding?

Especially when priority list (most likely, not sure where you live) already exists.

No mayor in the world will say "let's spend $X-billion dollars on a road now - an hope it gets utilized later. By doin so - we'll have to raise taxes to pay for it.'

They'll say - "let's build this $10M road and let the next mayor worry about finding the budget to fix it."

Why do you think there's reconstruction on the 401 every 3-4 years in the same areas?

Some people work in the public sector and some don't....nuff said :)

It simply wasn't cost effective to have the city wired completely underground. Wire has changed a lot over the years 50 years ago they were still using wire insulated with cotton. Now with better materials things can be placed underground for easier maintenance and installation.
