I\'ve been hearing a lot about some sort of defect in the fuel pump... to go along with my busted muffler baffle too [ according to Crappy3 ] I\'ll have to go talk to my guy in brampton I know.

Would be nice if I had some background info though. Whats the scoop on this?

I had a hard start incident on the weekend and after reading a bunch of posts on the Mazda3forums site I decided to call my Mazda Dealer (Burlington Mazda). They said to bring the car in and that yeas there had been a few 3\'s coming in with Fuel Pump problems. It does sound like there is an issue, what it is I\'m not too sure. I\'ll be taking the car in on Thursday and I will post up as soon as I have some info.

Sounds good. Just got off the phone with the Service dude over at Brampton Mazda and he told me the same thing... so it sounds like there is an issue, it\'s just not a recall or anything [ yet ]

What exactly are the symptoms of a bad fuel pump?

The first symptom of a bad fuel pump is the difficulty in starting up the car when the engine\'s cold. Because of the defect in the fuel pump, it takes longer for the fuel to reach your engine. Thus, you\'ll be turning the key and holding it there for a second or two and it\'ll fail. Then you\'ll repeat this procedure maybe once or twice more before the engine starts.

If you don\'t get the fuel pump changed, the second symptom to follow will be a hard jerk when the gear changes (usually from 1st to 2nd) when the engine hasn\'t reached it\'s running temperature.

This is what I experienced and there could be possibly be more symptoms. After I had the fuel pump changed, the engine starts almost immediately and the shifting of the gears is smooth.

When I initially took it to the dealership, they had to order the fuel pump and it took them almost 3 weeks. So if you have the first symptom, take it to your dealer ASAP. Hopefully, you can get it fixed before the second symptom begins.

I get the second symptom on occassion, generally if it is cold (the engine or the ambient air temperature), but I\'ve never had a problem starting the car.

Well I got the word from the dealer about my car. They are going to replace the fuel pump. Hopefully that cures the starting problem. My master cylinder is also leaking, hence the low brake fluid.

Only problem is that fuel pump is on back order and they want to keep the car so means I\'m in a loaner for 2-3 weeks...Hopefully it\'s going to be another \'3\'...

He was refering to my first post. My muffler sounds very loud and muffled when I give it some gas. Sounds like I have some spiffy muffler thats made to growl a little. It\'s not a huge problem, as long as it\'s not gonna cause any other issues in the future.

The one thing that I wish the car had was a nise exhaust note when it\'s reved near the redline. I DO like how quiet the car is tho...

Swordfish: even when talking to newlook and I, you couldn\'t tell if the car was on or off :p that\'s awesome!

There have been a few 3\'s that have needed fuel pumps. Unfortunately the parts needed for the replacement have been on backorder from Mazda. There are 3 items that are replaced: the fuel pump module assembly, lock ring to secure it to the tank, and the seal for the lock ring.

Guys,

Next week I\'ll post a bunch of TSBs/FAQa/FYIs at MZ3Forums (10+), one of which include the fuel pump (IIRC). I know there\'s one on the grooved rotors for sure

You\'re welcome to get them and post them here.
