View Full Version : Rattle in driver side door

From time to time I hear a faint low rattle sound coming from the drive side door. It sounds like to me how a door rattles caused by a subwoofer (and I don\'t have one). Not a big deal. I find simply openning and closing my window about 1/4 the way down seems to fix it. I don\'t feel like taking the door apart or even having the dealership take it apart, in fear that the rattle might get worse or create a new one. I can live with it for now, but was just wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem. Thanks.

Sorry, nothing \"hear\". :sarc
I would definitely have the dealer check it though.

Or it could be the guy in your glovebox telling you how hot it is inside...like in the TV commerical. Let him out, he probably has to pee. :p

Hey mig, I just joined the site, but I have the same rattle you\'re talking about. It\'s right near my left arm on the drivers side. I wanted to see if Markham Mazda would fix it, but I have a feeling that I\'d probably just end up with something busted.

Welcome to the board Jay3! Don\'t go to the service dept. at Markham Mazda, everyone who\'s ever said anything about that I\'ve heard/read had only bad things to say about their service dept. I\'d recommend heading over to Avante Mazda instead for service, but this is also based on word-of-mouth.

It\'s not terrible, more annoying that I\'ve heard it and don\'t know what\'s causing it. I would like to take the door apart and look, but don\'t want to create more of a problem. I worry that the dealership might do the same. According to my dealer they said that the first year I can bring the car in for any rattles. I\'ll let it be, see if it gets worse then bring it in.
Let me know what you decide to do.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to change your speakers :D
That way when they take off the door panel, you can ask them to check for anything that\'s loose.

Great another reason to spend money on the car, like I need a reason :)

10-4 I hear the rattle loud and clelar. HAHA. yeah i hear the rattle, it is coming more from the panel at the side of the deiver door where the side airbag would normally be near. right next to the windoww (inbetween the rear and front driver windows) I dont know what it is.

does it happen all the time? or just in certain conditions (ie. Music blaring)?

I have a small rattling on the pass door once in awhile... I got it in the driver\'s door as well, but not as frequent as the pass door. Usually after you hit some bumps and it rattles for awhile, and goes away without being noticed. No rattling here for the past few days.

going over small bumps in the road, and music too (it doesn\'t even have to be loud)

hmm... I don\'t have that... except when the music is really loud, (ie when volume is at 20+)
But I have my bass at +3, so I just hear the vibrating. it is understandable and tolerable tho. If my radio is off, my car is rattle free.

Do yourselves a favour and remove the door panel. It\'s really quite easy, I did it myself yesterday...twice to fix a phantom speaker problem in the one of the rear doors. The hardest part is removing the wiring harness for the windows and locks from the panel.
Hmm, maybe now I\'ll apply some Dynamat on the door panels!

Perhaps. What\'s Dynamat?
bluntman
06-20-2004, 02:34 PM
Dynamat is a sound deadening material, a rubberized tar paper with a foil backing. It\'s used to keep the sound in and road noise out. I installed this on my previous car, but being my first time with the stuff I cut up the skin on my hands like you wouldn\'t believe (once the foil backing is cut, it\'s very sharp).
I\'ll bring a philips screwdriver to the next meet and I\'ll check out your doors. :D

The door panels come off easy? or do they require a lot of prying off?

You can pry them off with your finger tips, there are two screws to remove first.

Just recently I also heard a rattle but only when I put the volume above 20 and the music had lots of bass. I heard a small clicking sound from the back right door speaker. I told Westowne Mazda about it during my oil change. They looked at it and said the speaker was lose so the fixed it. For a good week it was perfect, now I heard it again a couple of more times. Not as much as before. Could the screw be losening by itself? Or is it the speaker? I\'m not going to Mazda again because it\'s not that big of a deal, it only happens rarely and with really loud music (I don\'t go past 20 on volume, well rarely).

20 is quite loud, even with the stock stereo. I\'ve upgraded the speakers, added a sub and two amps and I rarely go over 10 (still have the stock HU). It\'s most likely the speaker, probably not bottoming out, but the speaker becoming undone or an interior body panel or the window/door lock wiring harness rattling around or even the window pane or its mechanism rattling around too. Either way, remove the interior door panel - it\'s quite easy - and see what you can see.

I pretty much always have my windows down and sunroof open, so when you\'re driving at 120 on the highway, I can\'t hear anything at a volume of 10, so mine\'s around 17-20. And I have the ACL set to 3. I like that feature. :)

Oh the highway, My windows and sunroof is closed. (VOL 15)
Anytime I\'m constantly going between 80-100 km/h, I have a crack in all four windows and the sunroof tilted. (VOL 20 with ALC Level 1)
Below 80, all the windows are down and sunroof is wide open. (VOL 20 with ALC Level 3)

I have a rattle on my driver\'s side door too. Only at around 120+ or on bumpy roads. I had Morningside Mazda look at it and they were clueless. They\'re planning to replace the plastic connectors that lock the panel in but I don\'t think that\'s the problem. I find that if I push or pull on the door while driving, the sound goes away, so that could mean my lock latch is a little loose?

Can you guys tell where exactly the rattles are coming from? Bottom, top, front, back side of the door?

I\'ll try to listen for it, I think I have some how mentally blocked out the sound and deny there is any rattle.

I remember reading somethin about a very similar problem on one of the other Mazda3 forums and the guy had it checked out and it ended up being somethin simple like the clips that hold the door panels on or somethin like that....Maybe you can find the thread??

So Mazda called me saying the replacement panel clips were in. I went in and told them I don\'t think that\'s the problem since the rattle goes away when I push or pull on the door. I said it may be the latch and sure enough, the latch was not screwed in properly. I guess it\'s a hard problem to find since it was still tight, but loose enough that it rattled a bit at 120+.

Bluntman - How simple is it to take off the door panel? Any chances of breaking any clips?

It\'s very easy to remove the panels, just make sure to pull straight out.

How about putting them back in?

I should have also mentioned that you must lower the window glass into the door and that there are a couple of screws that you\'ll have to remove first.
To put the panel back on, hook the top of the panel onto the opening at the top of the door (where the glass goes into) and tap the door panel clips back into place with the heel of your hand.

Went to the dealership to have them look at it. Funny enough when the mechanic drives the car the rattle just seems to mysteriously disseaper. :( They kept telling me to come back when it gets worse because there is no bullentin by Mazda and they dont know what to fix.
I had to keep insisting that I AM NOT making it up. So they pulled the door apart.. tighened all the screws and bolts.
The rattle is still there http://www.vortexmediagroup.com/images/banghead.gif

I read over at M3F that it could also be the lock, either the locking mechanism on the door or the latch on the B pillar. Either way, have the dealer tighten the bolts holding either and it may solve your problems.

Mine does the same now...with music on and off. Slow and high speed driving...
...goes away if I elbow the padding on the door.
Going to mention it to Avante next Service.

matter of fact just took a look at it i think i may have fixed it
Redhouse

I had this problem (or similar) and fixed it.
There is a middle panel in the door that is made from a reinforced board (firberglass likely) and running around its edges is a seal of goop to keep the water from running in the car when it rains outside. There are some wavy parts to the contour of the edge of this board, and some contours jut out beyond a line drawn between two bolts (so it looks slighyly unsupported other than for the goop below it). Additionally i found a plastic fastner of sorts, it looks like it had a phillips head socket in it and was a rounded oval top of about 1\"diameter that was actually under the fiberglass board. When I shimmed some of these areas with a thin foam (used to keep my motherboard off the bottom of the box) and fastned the middle panel back down the sound went away. You can test where the area is by taking the main panel off and just hitting parts of the metal frame while the fiber middle board is still attached.
So in the end i think my twang/rattle was comming from that little plastic fastner hitting the middle fiber board plate.

There is a TSB out on this now.
Funny when i went to ONTARIO MAZDA they told me they wont bother trying to fix it because my car was over 20k on it. A month later I find out there is a TSB on this issue.
Thanks ONTARIO MAZDA... I love your service ;)

Bringing this back from the dead.
I have an annoying vibration in my front passenger side door whenever some bass tones are played through the speaker. (Thought I fixed it but I was wrong) I can make it stop by pushing in on the panel at the handle. I'm going to try Redhouse's solution later.
Anyone else have any alternative solutions I can try just in case? I was thinking of stuffing some upholstery foam in there, but I'm not too confident that will do anything.

I'm having the same problem in my passenger side door. At first it was noticeable between sound levels 12-18 but anything louder would subdue the noise. Now it seems that no matter how loud the music is the noise in the door is very apparent.
I'm going to take it to Mazda of Toronto tomorrow see if they can have a look at it.
