...or are commercials getting more annoying on TV than they used to be? I find myself muting every time there are commercials whereas before I used to be able to put up with them?
Advertising is evil.

Yes I think they're getting worse, a la Idiocracy.
Tim Hortons is probably the worst offender.
btw, IBTL.

On demand/pvr is the future, a big sign that traditional ads are on their way out is the stronger presence of product placement. Best example I can think of is subway sandwich shop in Community

While I'm ranting...I also hate when channels broadcast widescreen content on standard television channels. Worse is on high def channels, widescreen content, and for some reason it doesn't fill the entire screen. It's like they are broadcasting standard television content, scaled back up.

More and more commercials have nothing to do with the product it's advertising, and very few of them are actually funny
Commercials are indeed getting annoying as shit. Can't stand 90% of them anymore.

I especially hate how some companies try to make their product have some sentimental value in their commercials.
the biggest offenders of that are Tim Hortons, McDonalds and blinds to go.

The reason you get films not fitting your screen is because films aren't made 16:9 ratio. Anamorphic/Enhanced widescreen is when they digitally manipulate the pixel's so they can fit the 16:9 ration of our tvs. I typically prefer the original ratio.

That is fine, I want original aspect ratio. The ones that bother me are when a channel is broadcast in high def and widescreen and they are showing content that is widescreen, but there are still black borders on all sides of the picture. It's like wtf, you have widescreen content, you're broadcasting it in widescreen, why the fvck doesn't it fit? It ends up looking like this:

Also, viewer advisories? Screw off, I don't need to be told the channel has mature subject matter after every fvcking commercial...I know god damn well what I'm looking at. And seeing as how most shit has parental controls now anyway, just let the parents use that to regulate what their kids are watching.

That is just bad parents wanting someone to blame. Look how many 12 year olds play GTA V

I mean the obvious simple solution is to not watch tv...but it's nice for some background entertainment while I'm cooking or browsing the web or something.

I have to agree, I'm finding it painful to watch something that hasn't been recorded on my pvr.

Whether you hate it or not, the goal of the commercial is to get you to recognize their brand names which you did in your post.
+1 its annoying that Tim Horton's thinks that they are Canadian culture. There is a big tims coffee cup billboard at the arrivals section in Pearson that says welcome home (drink our coffee please)

you cant escape ads though... even youtube has them and some of them are really annoying ( Im looking at you Toyota)
I feel that the art of advertising is dying with ads not doing something interesting but rather just trying to fit with society in various ways such as :
1) the feels ad:
Usually some made up story ( they can be real but some of them are obviously made up) that is conveyed to make the viewer feel a certain way. This can be sadness, happiness, or just some advertisers view of universal feeling. Sometimes the ad has nothing to do with to product and then right at the end: BOOM PRODUCT PLACEMENT ( coughcialiscough)
2) the young and hip ad
Commercial that uses dubstep and various youth cultures to try and fit in. Usually targeted to a young audience, much of the young audience dont actually get affected by this and say " OMG I want to buy that product now because they used dubstep/skateboarding in the ad". Most youth are infact disgusted by this ad and think its a joke.
3) The legacy ad: Black and white ( or sepia tone) cheesy commerical to show a companies roots and stuff and how they have been in business for the last 100 years.
4) the "product being tested by real people" ad. Usually people supposedly ( again I dont think they are actual random people rather than paid actors) get a visit by x company ( usually household products) and get some biased opinions towards the new product that they are recieving for free ( eg Febreeze and Swiffer)
and more lately
5) olympic ad: various clips from the summer/winter olympics and some other stuff... followed by product symbol and how they sponsor the olympics.
BTW Mazda isnt exempt by their ads. Im suprised they didnt do something out of heart for hearth besides the youtube video....
A good ad should have some creativity and intrigue/entertain the viewer. Good examples like, Honda's COG ad and VW's Kid vader ad etc

Television is advertising. That's why TV exists. They aren't going away, and you won't be able to skip them after 5 seconds forever either.
Have to say the new Mazda "Underdog" TV spots for the 2014 3 are pretty good.

Parents complain about those things but yet the go out and buy GtTA v for example for their 12 year old which I highly doubt has some sort of income so realistically the parents them selves are bad

If you think television is bad try the radio! I feel that the commercials outweigh the music. I work from 7am to 5pm And the radio is my sort of entertainment!

I hate radio too, I can't listen to the shit when I wake up in the morning anymore...angers me. I can't stand the female b!tches voice who hosts the morning show, thankfully they added a guy back in who has tamed the stupid womenly topics.

Netflix alleviates all these issues for me. Sure the selection is slim but I get by. Very rarely do I watch normal TV.
What I hate are internet ads. Remember those days when you clicked a youtube video and you actually got the video? Not: Lumosity is like training for your brain!!!!! Their ads ruin their playlist feature imo. If I want to listen to a bunch of music while doing something I often find myself listening to two songs then a stupid ad comes up again. I could stand it, but its the ones that are 1min+ that tick me off. So I have to stop whatever I'm doing to click the little skip button. Even the ads on other forums blows my mind how people can stand seeing that crap amidst their topics etc.
Photobucket is frustrating too. Uploading more than 5 pictures? Get ready to hear the same ad 5 times back to back :bang

+1 the "suffering" and crap, trying to guilt us and feel empathy, they also seem to carry on forever and ever with faces of kids/animals that are "sad". Spend the money it cost to make the commercial on helping them ffs.

Theres two factors here, it could be that you've grown up and matured noticing now just how bad they really are or how marketing really has become terrible and almost everytime makes the male figure look like an incompetent fool while telling the girl she needs this to feel special. Or using cute kids to distract the fact that they dont actually say anything about the product, those are the worst.
I don't even notice the commercials anymore... I normally pick up my phone on commercials and come on tm3 hahah
What I hate is seeing the same commercials over and over and over again. THAT is the most annoying part by far.

What annoys me the most isn't TV ads, but online ads before streaming videos... some news sites make you watch a 1 minute ad just to see a 30 second video.

People, just remember those ads are the reason why those sites and television stations are free.
The big question is, are you willing to pay ( and how much) for advertisement-free content/service?
