Hello everyone, my 3 just rolled over to 200000kms. I am up to date with any major maintenance issues such as oil, shocks, belts, brakes, tires etc.
However, I wanted to ask fellow TM3 members when do you think I should start thinking about a new Engine?
Is anyone on this forum up to 300000kms and above with their current 3?
I just want to be able to gauge how much longer I can keep this car.... my plan is to drive her until she blows up but just want to know how much longer I have on the original engine...
Thanks for the input!

Should be good for a while if nothing has happened so far. There's a few Speed3's over 200K that are still going strong.
RedRaptor is well over that mark

Why would you expect to replace the engine? If the maintenance is done according to Mazda, the engine should be the longest lasting part of the car.
Instead of worrying about the engine, start thinking how the suspension components and rust issues are holding up, because that will most likely kill the car.
Engines usually blow because of owner's stupidity and neglect, not because they hit some magical number on the odometer.

Agreed. I was just curious as to how long the 3's engine life expectancy would be. I drive about 50000kms a year.
Usually I hear about Toyota's and Honda's lasting over 400000kms but not too much about Mazda's. I have brand new suspension on my car and rust proof my car every single year along with proper oil changes etc. so not too worried about any of that.....

04 2.3 original motor with 285 000 and still going. there are quite a few with high mileage.
I had an old Accord that ran up to around 450,000 but the body just had enough. Engine ran like a top, I'd bounce that b!#ch off rev limiter daily.
Had a Corolla, spun a rod bearing at about 180k.
My 3 now just nearing 160. Runs super smooth. I'm oil change fanatic I just think it'll be everything else that'll fail around it, body especially(rust).

good point,
Springs and shocks aside, age and mileage can wear down bushings, bearings and other suspension parts. Good idea to get those checked out regularly as well.
Last thing you need is a busted ball joint or tie-rod leaving you stranded in the middle of the road

2006 2.3 262,000, tranny starting to go limp (mode) from time to time, but the motor runs awesome. My '95 VR6 before the 3 had 340,000.

This makes me happy. Although my 3 i bought used with a blown engine and replaced it, i've had so many problems with it. Expected though. I'm current sitting at 260k on the body, but engine has 70k less. Body looks flawless though since I had all the rust fixed etc

Good point!
My 3 is at 225k with no issues, and I just met a guy at work with an '04 Mazda3 that just turned over 300,000km and everything is working good (mechanically). I expect I can get another 200k out of her, if not more.

I don't really feel km privileged to post here since i only recently rolled over 150 on my 08 2.0. Ran a compression test recently just to be sure and had a difference of 2 on the gauge between the best and the worst so pretty sure shes still in brand new condition despite her 6yrs of my abusive driving. I've been pretty meticulous with preventative maintenance though.

when i was at mazda i had 2 customer that used there cars for driving instructors and i believe the 2010 had about 300,000 and the 08 had about 350,000. heck i saw a hyundai accent the other day that had 535,000km and the original engine and trans. so if you keep up with the maintenance there is no reason why these engines shouldnt last at least 500,000km. when i was working at mazda i would have been close to the 300 k mark at 10 years.. now i think the car is going to be lucky if it gets to 200 in 10 years. oh well.. just going to keep driving them until they die.. then on to something else..

Rolled over to 225km and still no rust or major issues. Hoping I can join the 300000kms club soon enough with as little headaches as possible!

I hit 261k this week and still going strong on my 08 2.0 and I am the original owner of it. Tranny was replaced at 250 but the little engine keeps on going lol. When I was at the wreckers the other day I found an 04 with 340k on a 2.3. Started up perfectly and no engine knock or nothing. I think FD22 was with me when I found it.

That was surprising to see for sure. But like most things, take care of these cars and it seems like they'll run for quite a long time

I did. My car had 2km on it when I bought it. I just hit my 7 year mark with it. I was 17 and drove the shit out of it for 3 years. Then I started having to replace things. I blew the clutch at 75k. That's when I started being nice to it. Its never let me down. Just in the last 3.5 years I've put on about 180k with my commute to work. Keep up with maintenance on it and it will take care of you.

What sort of maintenance should you be doing to last that long?
i just changed my brakes and rotors, i have changed my bushings and shocks, and i do regular oil changes. im at about 120k
jaimie08mazda3

Just the regular things. Oil changes (I went synthetic a few years ago), coolant flush etc. Just the little things to keep it going. I also do a lot of highway driving (90% of my mileage is highway). I haven't had one issue with the engine other then the O2 sensor going.

If you have an automatic transmission don't forget to change the ATF. Do it every 50k kilometers or so if you only drain the AT pan and refill. If you do a cooler line exchange, that interval can be stretched to 100k, depending on your driving style of course.
Other typically forgotten item would be the power steering fluid. It's a dead easy maintenance item (1L bottle of ATF will do the whole system flush) that pretty much all shops overlook, but in our Mazda's the unit is an electric pump and very pricey.
Check the brake guide pins and lube them annually to avoid uneven brake pad wear and caliper seizure.
Check the parking brake cable operation.
Rust proof the rear quarter panels, even if you got to Krown or Rust check, as they typically don't spray behind the plastic splash shield. I also brush on grease on the quarter panel lip just around this time of the year, as any oil based rustproofing will easily wash off from that area.
If you don't go to a rustproofing place you can buy a can of oil spray, remove the door sills and spray inside the rocker panels without drilling any holes. Removing the door trim will also expose plenty of access to shoot some rustproofing inside the door panels.
Lube all locks and hinges (motorcycle chain lube works great for this). I usually do it at the end of summer/beginning of fall. Never had a frozen lock or door.

That's awesome! I'm 10 months behind you (bought June '05), but doubt I'll hit those kilometers by then. Only at 240,000 right now....Who said the 2.3s were crap lol.

just hit 300000kms today..... she is still running strong but I think I should start thinking about saving for that new car just in case...
I'm thinking of replacing the Engine, but I am reading mixed reviews (but mostly bad ones on the 2.3L engine)... I know a few people have replaced the 2.3L engine on here before and I was just wondering what would be the average price for the Engine with Install at Jimmy's?

Why on earth would you replace an engine that's still running strong?
Do you knock down walls in your home and rebuild them just because they've been holding up the house for a while?
You replace your engine once it blows. It would be really silly to put in a new engine at 300k and find out that the old one would have run just fine to 500k.

Me too! I would put in a brand new 2.5 engine and get a big turbo and do all the work myself. Never done it before but I am sure it's pretty straightforward.
By the way I still need to learn how to change out the oil.

I'm not saying doing it myself lol. But a buddy of mine who works on these has got it I my head that it can be done and for a decent price with that. I don't mean I'd do it myself at all bro. I just mean if a time came and I could afford it and I intend to do what I want to do with it That's exactly what would be done.
