View Full Version : The saga of my Fiance's Mazda5 Continues - ODB2 COnnection Dead?
So My fiancee just took her car to Mountain mazda for an E-Test. They couldn't connect to the computer.
Siting Electrical issues.
I told her to leave - I just don't have the money to start chasing down electrical gremlins.
Is there anything common that would prevent your ODBII port from working properly? Going home tonight to look at it but I doubt I'll get much time in at Minus 20 degrees.
I ****ing hate her car.
A few months ago - it wouldn't shift out of park. That settled itself down.
Her butt warmer also died (light turns on... just no heat) also, the radio lights kept winking out over bumps, but after I fidled with the dimmer knob on her dash that stopped happening.
I'm terrified - Is there jsut one wire cluster that goes from the ODBII connector to the ECU, or is a huge mess that connects to everywhere?
I don't have the money for the dealer to start sinking a bunch of Hundred-buck hours into her car.
... her birthday was yesterday. So I guess that means her plate is expired (someone told me it was valid until the end of the month - Dealership told her otherwise?)
I'm hoping I'll just wait a day or two till it gets warmer out... wiggle some wires and it'll magically work. I'll plug my ELM bluetooth in tonight and see if i get any life.
Seems like drive clean is on the cusp of getting scrapped entirely.

this van, oh man
Your plate sticker expires on your bday. Not till end of month. I made that costly mistake thinking that was he case.
I'm not sure if I should do the happy dance or go nuclear.
Came home. Froze my fingers off, but I plugged in my 14 dollar Bluetooth ODBII reader (amazon special) and it fired up and connected no problem. O2 Sensor, MAF, Coolant Temp, Throttle position, RPM... all the details.
Not sure what torque logs, but I saved a log.
Called Mountain mazda, they said they've heard of peoples cares not working elsewhere, and then working on their machine (they're all the same government machines?) but never the other way around. Since it never "phoned home" to the government to record my results, they will credit the 35 dollar fee to my test (which I hope will work)
Its possible it didn't make a decent connection - the port is much more recessed in the mazda5 than our 3's.
Right now I'm siding on happy dance - No rewiring the ECU/Port for me.
Anyone in hamilton know of a reputable shop to do a drive clean at? Sending my Fiance in alone so Its gotta be trustworthy. (before I met her, she had 3 tranny flushes on her saturn in 40,000km...)
also, anyone know if torque will log engine details? I emailed myself the log and its just GPS based. :-(

There are other software you can download onto your bluetooth enabled laptop and log lots of other information.
Do you really think they'll scrap drive clean?

You can use Torque to check to see if your car will pass the current DriveClean test.
Add Display --> Emission Monitors since DTC Clear
If all the relevant tests show complete, you're in the clear.
As for Torque logging details, you can set it up to log whatever PIDs are available. (Menu --> Settings --> Data Logging & Upload --> Select what to log)

ECU is part of the emissions equipment. I would assume that the OBD2 port is also part of the emissions equipment since it is the only means to communicate with the ECU. Emissions equipment warranties are usually much longer than the standard power train warranties. If the problem persists, I would do some research around the emissions equipment warranty and see if the OBD2 port is covered before you waste you time f'ing with it yourself.
well I took the car to the Mountain mazda again and it failed again. took it to Beverly tire and it passed easily - He just had to hold the cable in firmly... Wish Mazda tried that.
