Hey folks,

I purchased a 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback back in November 2012 from MoT. I noticed a few months ago, that I had some odd discoloration happening on my hatch window window panel runs. I'm not 100% sure if it's rust or not, but it looks to be. Looks to be getting worst, as time goes on.

I'm doubting it's rust, as the material that the discoloration is on looks to be made of plastic? I'm hoping this is something I could solve with some sort of detailing?

If it's rust, should I take this to the dealership? I'm still under warranty. I only have 42k km on my car.

Thanks guys

Nope I tried.

and thanks guys, i'll take it to the dealership next week. Has anyone had this happen to their Mazda's after a year or so? as well, I dont think Mazda of Toronto would give me a hard time on this would they?

wow that sucks! there's steel inside those beams and that looks like rust for sure. Talk to your dealership.

No wonder... I honestly thought they were some some of plastic material. This has to be rust then! Thanks

That's on the rear window right? Mine was rusting there too but I caught it when it first started and you could barely see it and it was only a few specks. Took it too my local dealership and was worried they would give me a hard time cause you could barely see it - they were great and replaced it under warranty.

Yes it is! it's actually on both of the rear side windows. I'll take it to Mazda of Toronto and i hope I don't get issues :p will update you folks!

mmm. Rick at MOT can not always be the easiest to deal with. Depending on what is more local I would suggest another dealership.

Those things are pretty common for rust. You can just buy a new one from the dealer and replace it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Yup. I'd suggest Budds Mazda... even though Booter22 isn't there anymore, I'm sure Katie will take care of you.

Actually I'd be very worried about it. If it rusts like that after 2 to 3 years, what's not to say it won't happen again in another couple years?

Wow, that's messed up. Once spring hits, I'll be checking my 3 thoroughly again. I've had mine for 5 years and there's no rust.

You can buy anything new; it's warranty and money out of pocket. It's easy to say you wouldn't worry about it when it is someone else's.
Mine was rusting 6 months later and I am happy they didn't give me a hard time about it.

It's starts inside so look very carefully at the rubber to see if it is creeping out.

IIRC they are very easy to replace..

I don't think you should have any issues.

If you do, let me know before you leave.

I had rust in that same spot couple of months after I bought my 2011. Took it to Mazda of Toronto and they replaced that part under warranty

I'd be concerned. Once rust starts the only real way to prevent it is to replace that part. Otherwise you can only hope to contain it but it'll still be creeping there and waiting to spread.

He shouldn't have an issue having it replaced, but I would be concerned as to why it rusted in the first place! Seems like water may be getting trapped between and behind the rubber and metal. You might consider having them spray the crap out of the new ones with a rust inhibitor before they place them on....just saying.

That reminds me, I need to go down to Krown asap since there's a string of warm days coming up.

If you krown when there's already a bit of fender rust is it still worth it? Will it slow it down?

Rust is like cancer and must remove it. You can still Krown your car and prevent rust from starting elsewhere.

Thanks for pointing out that trouble spot. I remembered seeing that thread a few weeks back and I also have a 2012. This week-end with the warmer weather I swapped the tires and took the time to look over the car and, there are some very small spots on rust on the same part. I'll keep an eye on it and once it gets more noticeable I'll head to Mazda service counter, for the second time since I own the car.

Went to Avante Mazda cause I've got rust near my rear window. They ordered the part and I have to go back for them to replace it.

Hey guys, just an update.

I went to MOT and spoke to Rick. Rick covered it no problem as I was still under warranty. :)

It's called a window channel, just an fyi if anyone has the same problem. :)

Thanks for the advice folks
