Im considering painting my magnaflow exhaust before installing it to prevent any further rusting. Has anyone else done this? Is it even worth it? Can anyone give some tips or advise on how to do it if I decide to. Thanks in advance.

Ceramic coating really helps and its cheap and lasts

I've seen a few people paint their exhausts black with a rattle can (e.g. bbq paint), with good prep work, turned out great. I've done it personally on another car, but it was to make the muffler black so it wasn't such an eyesore under the back of the car.

-edit-
When you say "further rusting" is it already rusty? If so, that is going to quadruple the amount of prep you have to do...

BBQ paint works well.
But it won't prevent, delay or stop rust from coming through.

It does mask the rust so that it isn't as visible

Ceramic coating an exhaust would not be cheap

I did. I used the high heat exhaust ceramic from duplicolour. Holding up pretty good

I've heard rumors you can plastidip an exhaust.

I too should look into paint or something. I see a small bit of rust on mine after only two years.

I dont think plastidip is a solid option unless you're talking about

... Just the tip...

Haha, I have my doubts about how plastidip could hold up to the heat of an exhaust anyway

My guess is it would become tacky and make rusting a million times worse. Would probably also smoke and drip.

Thanks for the input everyone. I feel like plasti dip would be sketchy even for just the tip

peter had it on his speed exhaust. held up pretty good. was a PITA to take off. but it did and then polished up nice. so it would work.

It won't rust unless it's made out of peasant grade steel like t409.

I had the mazdaspeed accessory exhaust which claimed to be 100% made out out of stainless and it was pretty much solid rust after a couple years with the exception of the muffler.

I have done this before usimg high heat rattle cans. It works, but by all means not a permanent solution.
Even with the high heat paint, it ended up peeling/chipping/fading by the 2nd to 3rd year.

You've owned a car for more than a year? LOL

stainless doesn't necessarily mean no rust though. Low grade stainless will still rust (as Zoo Hair said)

I should have known that... but for some reason I just assumed all companies that said "high grade stainless" were all using the same thing. Now I see they're not. Which makes me angry.

Ive personally never heard of anyone wanting to paint an exhaust myself I've only used heat wraps over an exhaust..

However I know theirs rattle cans you can get in ceramic paint you can get just check temp ratings.

I've blacked out my muffler on my old T4R cause it was a clump of rust sticking out the back.

It's actually common with 4x4's as most are higher off the ground - and a rusty muffler is easier to spot.

Vibrant a few years back - even came out with their "Stealth" mufflers that were flat black.

I plastidipped my exhaust tip a little under a year ago..all this talk of plastidip made me paranoid so i just went and checked if it would peel off or if it screwed my tip. Thank you all, i now need a fresh new can of black to dip it again. It peeled off easier than my camo ever did.

Before peel

After peel, looks the same as the day i got it.
