View Full Version : 2014 Mazda 3 GS Sport Gas Tank - 40 Litres?

I have an almost 3 week old Mazda 3 2014 Sport GS. The gas tank is supposed to hold 50 litres. I let the gas run down to one tiny bar, gas light was on, and the info read I had 24km left to the tank. I could only fill it with 40 litres of gas. I would understand this if I thought it was remotely possible that there was a 10 litre reserve - but if that were the case - the info would have read that I had at least 150km - 200km left before empty. Is it possible they only put a 40 litre gas tank on my car and not a 50litre tank?

Common situation. Your car has the 50 litre tank.....reserve is huge.

Thanks for your feedback. If the reserve is so huge, why would it say there was only 24km remaining and only tiny bar left down at the end. 10 litres of gas in the Mazda 3 is almost 200km.

Couldn't tell you. Gen II's are the same. Wife does not have the 'remaining fuel' information, but as soon as the light comes on with the last bar, she still has 12 or so litres remaining.

Ditto on Gen 1. When my low fuel light comes on, it essentially means I have 40km left until I only have 10L of gas in my tank.

My theory is that car makers do that because it's kinda in our nature to try and drag every last drop of gas out of our cars, especially when it's almost $1.40 a liter. That extra 10L makes sure that if you happen to miscalculate you aren't stuck in the middle of nowhere, or in the middle of traffic, with no gas.

For me my low fuel light just means I have 140-150km left till empty.

Yup, 2012 here, and when the light turns on (when there's only one bar left) I've routinely driven more than 100 extra km of dense stop and go city driving. I once traveled about 100km on the highway after the last bar was out. I don't have the trip computer, but if I had, it would probably have been at 0 and some sort of alarm would've went off or something:D That one time, I did end up putting more than 14 gallons (56L) in the 55L tank.

So, as others have said, you need not worry, and be happy you have such a big reserve. Don't make it habit to extend the tank too much... you don't want to abuse that 2 year roadside that came with the car ;)

I've pumped 47.5 L of gas into my tank so it has to be a 50 litre tank .....

I rarely see the low gas light (once or maybe twice).

My last fill was 38L. I fill every other weekend and the fills have been ~40 L.

I'm going to hijack this thread and ask is it possible to get 800km+ readings on the car? By my math if a car has a tank of 50L and it averages around 5.7L/100 km then it's possible to get a reading around 877km! (Obviously there's a margin in reading error, but in theory I think I'm right)

On a trip through Quebec and Ontario I was getting 800+km to a tank. I had no bars left of course, but my mileage was between 5.2-5.5L/100km. It is possible with nothing but highway driving but most people don't drive long enough to see it.

I would say 800 is pushing it even with the 2.0 sky.

I don't have the sky but I wouldnt dare try to push it past 700km to a tank highway.

I normally fill up with 1-2 bars after travelling about 500km to a tank. Mostly in city driving though.

Oh yeah, driving in VA, NC & SC at around 85 mph I was hitting 700+ km per tank in my 2012 2.0 MZR. I think the most I stretched it was 776. That was great! AVG was way over 30 MPG. Nothing like my all-time AVG of 8.2L/100.
Usually get around 600km per tank without stretching it too much doing about 85% city.
