What stores in TO sell stubbys for the 3? How much does it cost and how well does it fit on the base?
Thanks.

Try eBay. I forget who I bought mine off of, but it was like $13 and shipping.

You can also buy them from a Honda dealer, ask for the one off of an Element/S2000, or from a Suzuki dealer.

Also another atenna thatfit very well is the one for a H2. I have it on my car and the reception is still great and its a clean fit.

Thanks for the reply guys. For the stubbies from the dealerships (honda, suzuki, hummer), how much do they charge? How\'s the fit for the Honda and Suzuki? I heard some have a fatter base than the base on our car?

I\'m almost certain that the \"shark fin\" antenna won\'t fit our cars...without much modification that is. The Honda (Element/S200) antenna is slightly larger at the base than the stock antenna. I\'m not sure about the H2 or the Suzuki antenna though. I am almost certain that there is another type of antenna available from Honda, if I\'m not mistaken, one off of a Civic Si. What I like about the Element/S2000 antenna is that it is flexible, not rigid like the one I bought of off eBay.

Cool. So how much does the Honda Element antenna go for? How exactly does replacing the antenna work? Do you just screw off the top part and screw on a new one on the base? How about reception? Do you lose a lot of reception?

yup just screws off and the new one screws right back on

I don\'t think so.... those are more complecated than screw on like ours.
They also have GPS and XM intergrated in them too.

The Element\'s antenna was $32 and I\'ve heard that the Suzuki\'s antenna was $20. Not sure about the H2\'s antenna, I\'ve called around and not many GM dealers stock them for some reason.

Which stubby antenna do you recommend?

It\'s hard to say. I really like the fact that the Element\'s antenna is flexible, but I don\'t like the fact that it has a large diameter base. I would like to take a closer look that the other three, the Suzuki\'s, the Civic\'s and the H2\'s antenna. Personally, anything that is at least 6\" in length is a start. I\'ve owned a 3.5\" rigid aluminum (bought from eBay) antenna and I thought it was just waaay to short...over-compensating maybe? :D

Cool. In terms of reception do you think one is better than the other? I don\'t really like the 2.5\" to 3.0\". Its a little too short for my tastes also.

The H2 atenna\'s base fits perfectly to the one on the 3 and is about 6\" or so a good legenth not too short but not too long.

The longer the antenna the better your radio reception, definitely.
Snipes
08-20-2004, 02:50 PM
Coming from an electronics degree yes the longer the antenna the better but with todays world there are methods to fit so much wire into a plastic casing. For all we know those 3.5\" stubby\'s could be a 4 ft coil wrapped inside a housing. Just like the stock ones, they are about a foot but really they are 2 feet because they send the wire out and then wrap it back down the original wire to increase the length and therefore better reception.

the H2 antenna fits the antenna base nice and flush (like the stock antenna). the s2000/element/mdx antenna sticks out about 1/8\" (the base of the antenna is bigger than the base it screws into) which ends up looking, to some people, like a christmas tree (but that didn\'t stop me from buying one :hoho )

Hey Bluntman,
Could you post a picture of the S2000 antenna on your Mazda 3? I heard there is a bit of overhang but if its so minor, I wouldn\'t be concerned.
What is your opinion on stubby antennas? I like the look but I\'m not too fond of doing a mod that will cause me to lose performance (in this case, reception).
Are all stubby antennas created equal? There is a sponsor on M3F named Engima that sells stubbys. How good are they?
I wouldn\'t mind paying more for a stubby that works better than others.
bluntman

Honda antenna (http://members.rogers.com/alegardo/antenna/honda.JPG)
As you can see there\'s a little bit of an overhang all the way around. All stubbies will degrade the radio reception to a certain degree. It all depends on the signal strength of the station, your proximity to the station/tower, your surroundings (flat land w/o obstructions or in the city or valley) and the size of the antenna. I listen to either a CD or the stronger radio stations in Toronto so the shorter antenna doesn\'t effect me quite as much.
Are all stubbies created equally. Hmm, I\'d say yes. Many of the stubbies that I\'ve seen are just milled aluminum painted black or some other colour, nothing special. I have one (6\" I believe) that comes in three pieces, the base, a thinner mid-shaft and the tip. It\'s still essentially an aluminum antenna, just with a different profile. I believe Xenon bought one that has three different mid-shaft sizes, but again, it\'s still just an aluminum milled \"rod\". The only different one is the Honda S2000/Element antenna. What I like about it is the fact that it is flexible!

I\'ve just picked up a stubby for an H2 from Roy Foss Motors (Yonge & Steeles) for $36 plus taxes. I think this may be \"a keeper\". I\'ve always liked the short but flexible antenna like the Honda Element/S2000 antenna but didn\'t like the fact that it looked like a \"christmas tree\", as some have put it. I have seen a JDM replacement antenna for the Axela, being sold on eBay by JapanParts.com for $25 USD. Without knowing whether or not it is the rigid type or the flexible type I opted not to \"Buy It Now\".
The H2 antenna is just as long as the Honda antenna but the part that your scren into the base is too short and doesn\'t protrude like the other antennae. To fix that problem you\'ll have to cut off about a quarter of an inch from the base end of the antenna, luckily the plastic pretty much cuts itself when using a sharp box cutter.
Dr Butcher
09-02-2004, 02:53 PM
Bluntman, so to get the H2 antenna to fit properly you have to do a minor modification to it?
What I\'m hearing is that the screw isn\'t long enough to engage the base on the roof of the car. You have to trim a bit off the plastic at the bottom of the antenna to get the screw to thread into the base? How much did you actually have to trim off?
Thanks in advance... :)

Modding is necessary for it to fit on the Mazda3. All the way home I was thinking about how to mod the antenna. Scissors? Dremel? Box cutter (exacto knife)? I ended up using an exacto knife - isn\'t \"box cutter\" an American term, similar to \"soda\" and our \"soft drink\"? Anyway, the exacto knife worked out great, just make sure that it\'s sharp, make a straight cut about a quarter of an inch from the end of the base of the antenna and slowly spin/turn the antenna. Simple as pie.

Do all GM dealers sell H2 antennas? I was at Hogan this afternoon and totally forgot to ask. I work right across the road from Trillium. Do they have them is stock or do you have to order one in?
Once again about the reception: do you notice a difference between stock and the replacement?

Not all GM dealers have Hummer parts. I first phoned North York Chev Olds and they told me I should call Roy Foss. What\'s strange is that both dealerships are in the dealership compound at Yonge & Steeles. Call around.
I don\'t really listen to the radio that often and when I do it\'s always tuned to one of the stronger radio signals. However, I haven\'t noticed change in signal quality with the H2 antenna.

Hey Xenon,

Anyone recommend a smillar (maybe cheaper) antenna to the I-Series from that eBay seller?

Well if that I-Series antanna is anything like the one I have, ther\'e a tiny bit of work to it.
When you remove the Mazda3 Antanna, you are left with the base and a screwhole. My antanna, the bottom of it is also a screw hole. The package came with two adapters. One where the two ends have the same diameter, and the other one has a wide end and a narrow end.
My antenna took about 2 minutes to install.
-Unscrew the stock antanna
-use the adapter (wide/narrow ends)
-screw in the addapter (it has a philips screw end, so you can be sure the adapter portion is tight
-screw on the new antanna.
Very easy. I think the adapter sizes are standard throughout the car industry, so I don\'t hink you should have a problem.

I only unscrew it in places where there\'s high potential of it getting stolen, shopping malls, Tim Hortons (lots of suped up crap boxes with punk kids driving them around the Tims near my house), movie theatres etc.
My neighbourhood is pretty good, so if my car is parked outside my house I usually don\'t take it off. At night my car is in the Garage, so no need to take it off there. I work with office business people and we have our own parking lot, so I trust no one is going to take it there, everyone in our company is over 25 (except me).
I was thinking of permenently mounting it on somehow, putting crazy clue in the hole before screwing it on, or wraping the threads in rubber before screwing it on... I donno.
Soulcrusher
09-10-2004, 01:08 AM
Don\'t permanently attach it to your mount. I remember reading in at Mazda3forums that one guy did just that. Then some punk-ass would-be thief tried to screw it off and since he couldn\'t, he broke it right off, including the mount.

I believe this is the official JDM Mazda3 stubby antenna from Japan and the Axela in Japan uses this antenna.
Price isn\'t bad either, about $40 CDN.
Still have to try the H2 antenna I got last night first.
Xenon
09-10-2004, 07:40 PM
$40 CDN seems a little steep for me.
I also wanted a chrome/aluminum look one, so that was my choice. I was considering a JDM Antanna at first tho.
RedRaptor
09-12-2004, 10:18 PM
Ahh...the price we all pay for authentic JDM parts. Yes its pricey but its an original JDM Mazda 3 part.
Anyways...I installed the H2 stubby antenna tonight on my car. Again had to make a mod to the antenna to make it fit our cars, but 3 mins and I was done.
After testing the radio while driving my girl home, reception is the same or even better than the stock antenna. I tired 98.5, 92.9 and 92.5 and they all sounded great.
If you look closely...the H2 antenna almost looks like the Axela JDM antenna also. Granted they both cost around the same. I\'ll try the JDM one when this one gets stolen.
Xenon
09-14-2004, 02:15 AM
Try 103.5.. They have always had a weak signal.
RedRaptor
09-14-2004, 09:48 AM
Z 103.5 is fine. But you are right, its the first station to fade out if you\'re driving out of GTA. I\'m usually on that or on Flow or Chum FM.
No issues with reception. I\'m guessing if the antenna is good enough for a H2 Hummer, it got to be good enough for the Mazda 3.
Now the only issue is when its going to get stolen. Only a matter of time I think. Oh well I\'ll just buy another H2 antenna.
Xenon
09-14-2004, 10:08 AM
I usually get a very clear signal, even if it is Z103.5. Only when I go into tunnels or underground parking lots does the signal really fade... or sometimes it gets lost. But under normal conditions there\'s nothing I can\'t tolerate.
What mod do you have to do to make the H2 antenna fit?

I was pleasantly surprised last weekend. I went to My buddy\'s cottage up near Bracebridge and I got Z103.5 all the way to Orillia using th H2 antenna. I don\'t know what it is about Z103, but their signal strength varies throughout the day. Just an update on the JDM antenna. I talked to a friend of mine in the OEM parts manufacturing sector.;) He told me that Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, and Mazda all use the same stubby antenna. Look at the base off of an MDX, FX35, or Aerio they all carry similar if not the same antenna base. I\'ve done some research and it seems that the stubby from Suzuki is the cheapest of all of them. Last time I checked it was less than $20.
So the S2K antenna is essentially the same thing as the JDM one?
I\'m still looking for the real thing with Mazda packaging :p but if that\'s not possible I\'ll have to settle for something else.

I asked specifically for the S2000 antenna and was told that the S2000 uses the same antenna as the Element. I stil have that antenna lying around somewhere at home, but it looks like a \"christmas tree\" when installed. I\'d check out the Suzuki antenna first and than if all else fails get an H2 antenna.

I thought the JDM stubby was no more than $30.

Maybe they come from the same OEM manufacturer but aren\'t exactly the same size. I want something that\'s a perfect fit.

i\'m not sure exactly how much it is. it would be much cheaper through FLIPSPEED but i\'ve seen items on e-bay cost 2-3x what we would pay from Joe.

with a little modification and $42 bux later you can have it from the GM dealer ( see here (http://torontomazda3.com/forum/read.php?TID=941)) so if you can get the suzuki one for 20 bux it looks like a deal :D
I\'m looking for something that doesn\'t need cutting or modification. I guess I\'ll just wait until a JDM stubby eventually shows up - the stock one doesn\'t bother me too much.
You don\'t cut much and you don\'t even notice it after it is cut. The reception is actually amazing I have not heard my signal weaken if anything maybe even improved.

GM dealer that carries Hummer which is closest to Markham should be the one on Yonge just north of Steeles (Roy Foss?), i believe.
I don\'t see any Suzuki dealer in Markham ... there\'s one in Richmond Hill further north of Avante Mazda and one in the Morningside Automall.
I got my Honda stubby from Markham Honda (Kennedy/407) for ~$33 + taxes
I\'d check out the Suzuki one first

I took the model number Bluntman gave me on page 3 in this thread to Hogan at Markham and Sheppard and they ordered it for me. I\'d try them because I got a pretty good deal on mine. ;)
After almost 8 months, I have finally found a stubby to order! Screw the JDM antenna.
I\'m getting an AutoExe antenna. This will be a perfect fit. ;)
link (http://www.boomplustoys.net/autoexe_product.shtml)
I don\'t want to order from BooomPlus again though - not only are their prices VERY expensive compared to other venders - their shipping takes forever too. My AutoExe springs were ordered through them and took a good 2 months to arrive.
I did more research - the rrp in Japan is 3990 yen ~ CAD$47.
Boom Plus is selling it for $71 + tax...

The one on Yonge Street north of Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill. There are only a few around town and they were the closest ones to me. You have to order it though b/c it was a non stock item.

The reception is the same as the stock one. I was actually able to get 93.7 on the dial. It wasn\'t that clear but I still heard it okay. The part number for the Aerio antenna is: (39251-54G10). The list price for it is $21.17 so when you go in to order it just say your from a shop and you should be able to get it for the trade price of $17.99.

usually people who work at a dealership or shop will get close to 20% off parts at other dealerships.
so, the conversation between flip and the suzuki parts person would\'ve gone something like:
<flipspeed looks around to see if anyone else is close by>
<after confirming that no one is close, lean in and speak as if under your breath saying>
flip: i work in the parts dept at avante mazda, what\'s the trade price?

The stupid dryer that comes down on your car at the exit busted it. I think any roof mounted antenna would fare the same way. Some touchless places have massive dryers mounted to the rails that don\'t even come near your car.
Hey Joe I just called Scarborough location (soo zoo kee) and spoke to a parts guy, he was very suspicious of me (asking me which shop i work at, my name, etc.). He told me 15% off from $21.17 (which is roughly $17.99 or $20.69 tax in) and then went on to say he would have to ship it to the shop I had stated I was working for (haha). Okay, I\'m still waiting for the Suzuki guy to get back to me on a better price. In the meantime I\'m ordering the stubby from a Kia Spectra 5. I\'ve seen it up close and the base is skinny and doesn\'t flare out like the Aerio one. So when I get it I\'ll let y\'all know how it fits. It costs $5 more than the Suzuki one but if it fits and looks better why not shell out the extra 5.

Hey guys.. just wanted to let you guys know that I just got back from the Philippines and i bought myself a 3\" stubby (rigid aluminum) and i\'m pretty impressed with it. The only thing is that the base does not really fit flush with the actual antenna... there is a very slight gap. i\'m not too worried about it or anything.. but as for signal.. i give it a 4 out of 5.. i hardly heard the difference of when i had the stock compared to the stubby. The best thing about it is that I only paid the equivalent of $5CAD!!! So for $5 bucks... I can\'t go wrong... hehe.

wohooooooooooooooo!!!!!
Hey everyone, I\'ve gotten a few PM\'s lately with regards to meeting up sometime this month (as a club meet). I\'d say let\'s get a meet going since there\'s gonna be quite a number of us meeting up with FLIPSPEED for the antennas eventually.
EDIT: FLIPSPEED, if you order Monday, when should they arrive in your hands? I want to set up a meet for everyone interested to get together sometime this month.

I\'m not at work today but I\'ll order them for sure on Tuesday. It takes 2-3 days for the stock order to arrive.

Yeah I just picked it [Suzuki Aerio stubby] up today. I tried it on a 3 in the showroom and it fit perfectly. It hugs the antenna base and doesn\'t stick out like the Honda one.

One note about the stubby. It screws on perfectly but it flares out a bit at the base. It doesn\'t bother me but I can\'t speak for everybody else. Like in the case of the H2 stubby you may need to trim at the base. I just left mine as it is beacuse it doesn\'t bother me.

We\'ll have to compare the two stubbies. Usually the longer the antenna the more flex it has. It didn\'t hold up against a car wash dryer. Other than that it\'s pretty flexible. If I pick up the Spectra5 on I\'ll have a spare.

Well I\'m here today till 5. So if you can make it today I\'ll be here. The deaalership is located at 11645 Yonge Street in Richmond Hill. About 3 light north of Elgin Mills on the right hand side. Look for the big Subaru sign.

FYI, take Bathurst up until Elgin Mills and turn right at the Petro Can station. Turn left at Yonge and continue north. There is a bottleneck on Yonge north of Major Mackenzie...it becomes one lane. :(
