I know this has probably been covered a million times, but maybe someone can help me understand...

Some lady that should not have had a drivers license lost control of her car, slid across 2 lanes and hit me a few months ago. Minor damage obviously not at fault. I've been driving for 13 years and this was my first claim. I've never had a speeding ticket etc.

Why the hell does this jack my rate up 150%? Insurance companies need to go fnck themselves.
The even more unlucky part is that I was paying $30/mo with a 2 year rate freeze, and this happened just at the end of the 2 year freeze :(

Holy shit! My mom was in a situation a few years ago where she was not at fault and her insurance went up. The insurance company said your insurance rating is still affected regardless if you're at fault or not. Its ****ing bs but hers didn't go up 150%. I think it was like 10$ more a month.

I'm in QC so that may make a bit of difference. I did a few online quotes with and without accidents and they're all exponentially more than I'm paying now so I dunno maybe something else changed. Even 20$/month is ridiculous though if it you aren't at fault. I mean, if I had multiple not at fault accidents that's one thing, but 1 in 13 years and raising rates for that is just robbery.

Hello

I am an Allstate insurance agent. Now there are certain laws insurance company's have to follow regarding premium increase. We are governed by FSCO. If all you had was a not at fault accident and nothing else there is no way they can raise your premium 150% it is against the law. You need to ask them to provide you with a proper explanation why they have done this and if they do not provide proper reasoning contact FSCO and file a complaint. Do you deal with a broker or a direct insurance company

Direct insurance. I think they gave me a really good rate initially to get me in the door. Their original premium was way below what other insurance companies were charging.
What is the maximum premium increase that is allowable by law?

Also, regardless of whether it was a 1% increase or a 100% increase, why do the rates go up for a single not at fault accident, regardless if the claim was $1 or $1000?

It may have not been related to the accident. Rates wouldn't go up with a not at fault claim.
Call up your insurer, ask for an explanation in writing.

Yeah, I'm going to do that for sure, just thought I'd complain about it publicly first :P hehe
Will post results, but yes, rates do go up with a not at fault claim. Just try getting a quick online quote with and without, itll change your rate by like 10/mo minimum.

Hey cabooze, I am from QC as well. It doesn't seem right that they increased your premium by 150%, makes no sense at all. My parents have made multiple claims for windshield and 1 moderate accident (5.5k damage, not at fault) and their premium went up by 120$ a year

Insurance is cheap though in Quebec. My cousin was paying f all for his and he had the equivalent to about 30 points off his record (ontario point system). But your sticker is expensive if I'm not mistaken. I wish I was paying 150/m lol.

It's so they can post record profits year after year...

The financial world is effed, the rich keep getting richer at the expense of the little guys.

Yep, you've got that right, except we don't use stickers (but still pay (a lot) for plate renewal)

Yeah, I guess that about sums it up.

FSCO doesn't regulate Quebec.
