View Full Version : Why rotate tires at 8000km?

I am about to be the owner of a Mazda 3, and I noticed that the standard maintenance is to have the tires rotated every 8,000 km.

Why do they have to be rotated so often? On my old Mazda Protege, the standard maintenance is to rotate them every 24,000 km.

I don\'t know what the exact reason, may be it is the GY thing. But if you have winter tires, at least for me, you don\'t need to rotate tire so often, just do it when you change summer/winter tires.

The manual states rotate if necessary, so it’s just a way for the dealer to take more money out of your pocket.

Front tires wear faster then rear tires so rotation helps even out the wear and helps tires last longer.

In the old days when cars needed oil changes every 5000 KM they would recommend rotation at 10000KM.

Now that service intervals are every 8000km , tire rotation should be every 16000 KM.

It really depends on how even you want your tires too wear. If you want to wait untill 24000 then by all means do so. I\'m gonna stick to every 16000

My 97 Protege has service intervals every 8000km with tire rotation every 24000km. That\'s why I was surprised to see the Mazda3 with tire rotation for every service interval (8000km).

Yeah come to think of it i was surprised when i found my old P5 was on the 24k plan. It just seamed so wrong to wait that long.

They didn\'t rotate my M3 tires at the 8k service. I\'ll have them do it at the 16k

Mine have been rotated at 8k. I figure there is no harm in doing so, more of a pain in the butt that\'s all.

If you do it sooner rather then later it will wear the tires down evenly. That way you dont end up having balds in the bak and tread only on the fronts after you rotate.

It also depends on how you drive the car.

But that doesn\'t really explain why the Mazda 3 is due for tire rotation much more frequently than the Protege. Wouldn\'t the Equal Force Distribution mean that it needs rotation less frequently?

I don\'t base rotating my tires off of the manual. I don\'t believe some of the stuff the manual says. Although this time I think they have it correct.

Another thing is they say 8000km for an oil change but thats if you drive below 3000 rpms all the time. My oil was way too dark alot sooner then that.

Just check the tread, and base it off that. If the cost of doing it at a shop is too much then look into getting a jack and 4 stands, that is if you have a good sized garage. It may take some time to do, but it is cheaper in the long run.

every 8 000. winters or not. give you a chance to make sure the brakes are ok. not to mention with the distance i drive i want to make sure the brakes are ok. :) but the winters will usually get 1 rotation a year. summers 1 rotation per year then a 1 swap each to put them on/ off.

Wow that's a lot of rotations!

I take my car to oil changers to have my oil changes every 8k because of convenience compared to the dealership.
Where do you get changes + tire rotations done? And how much?

I do it every other oil change as long as my alignment is good (which I do at least once a year).

yes they do. its not worth it for me to spend the time to do it at home. for the cost its worth it to me

well i do about 110 km per day just back and forth to work so 8k doesnt take me 4 months. tire swaps and rotations i have done at my location. tire roations cost $23.95 + HST, full swaps are $34.95 + HST ( best i remember as we havent done too many swaps recently in the wait for spring )

and as CWP said i also get the alignment checked once ever 24,000. just to make sure there is nothing that could wear the tires out early. for the cost of the inspection $44.95 + hst. vs replacing tires early its worth it for sure. plus bad alignment has impact on other items as well, early wear on suspension items, ride quality and so on. no need for too much detail as i know you guys know that as well.

Sorry this is at your local Mazda dealership where they rotate your tires for $35?

no my dealer does not rotate tires for $35

Tire rotations are $23.95 + HST
Tire / Seasonal Swaps are $34.95 + HST

hope that clears that up. that is also in my prior post.

My $0.02

Tire rotation is next to useless. Especially for an econobox that has $100 tires. Look at it this way, if you didn't rotate your tires you could end up replacing one pair sooner than the other. If this happens no big deal, your only out half the money at that time. when the other pair wears out, you'll cough up the other half. It doesn't cost any extra money. 4 x $100 = $400 (in $200 chunks)

Now, you can be a good boy and rotate the tires twice a year for $25. After 4 years you will replace your tires @ $400 plus $175 ($25 rotations at months 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42) for a grand total of $575. This is best case scenario of course. You could have blowout on any one of the four at anytime causing you to replace two tire prematurely.

Of course, if you have a set of winter rims and tires, you'll automatically rotated twice yearly without having to pay for separate rotations.

If your car wears tires unevenly, spend some of the $175 to get that problem fixed. Am I wrong?

You're wrong probably in more than 1 sense, but the one I'd like to point out is;
My tires cost more than $100 each.
And when you're 21 and working a part time job + school $200 tires are like $2000 tires to a person driving a porche.

Alright. That's possible that you have more expensive tires. In that likelihood, you may not even have the same size tires front and rear (possibly unidirectional). You wouldn't be able to rotate those. You'd probably want to run something different in the winter.

I'm a huge fan of having my wheels off too often. I like that my brakes get inspected. I don't like that wheels are seldom torqued properly. I'll rotate them myself seasonally with my winters thanks.

I drive 6 months with summer tires, 6 month with winters, I put about 10-12k every 6 months. Every time it comes to switching over from summer/winter tires I rotate them. Rotating tires every 8k is a bit over kill if your suspension/tire wear is even, and alignments every 24k is a waste of money unless your vehicle tracks or has uneven tire wear - If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Booter22
02-25-2012, 10:13 AM
an alignment every 24k is interesting you consider it over kill but it may also not be required as it never hurts to have it inspected. by the time you see the uneven tire wear it can be too late anyway, and thats even if at that time correcting the alignment will bring the tires back into a normal wear. for the cost of the tires vs the cost to inspect the alignment yearly.. i play the safe card and have it checked and corrected if needed.

Camber kits are the only way to prevent uneven wear... My brother installed camber kits on my car and his wifes and on her car he had the aligment shop set the camber at 0 and guess what after 50,000km...tires wear even.

I don't think it's right when dealerships feed people a load of crap by doing it once a year (24k)will help with uneven wear when that will not solve the problem on these cars...

Also.. your front tires are going to wear out faster as they are the ones doing the driving and turning..................................

If everything is even.... Yes
If dramatically dropped, no
