Noob to Modding: Question about purchasing a SRI

Hello all,

So I just bought a 2014 Mazda 3 GT Sedan (2.5L Skyactive), and want to start with some smaller mods. I'm having it rustproofed at Krown today, and likely will have it tinted next week. I was looking up SRI and I'm really interested in purchasing one of those, but have some questions that i'd like to hear answered partly because most of you will be familiar with the driving conditions we face here.

1) Is there any maintenance to the SRI that goes above and beyond the normal filter replacement you see with stock intakes?

2) Any concerns using SRI systems on vehicles that are driven daily? (meaning they can get caught in some sketchy winter weather as opposed only driven on nicer days)

3) How much louder can I expect it to be in my vehicles cabin from this? I do a good mix of city and highway driving.

4) Does insurance need to be informed about this mod?

5) What kind of hit does it make against your fuel economy?

3.) it adds a nice hissing sound for me at least. it will make the car sound a little louder when accelerating but not as much as an aftermarket exhaust will

Thanks for the info! I didn't plan on telling my insurance unless it was pretty clear it would be an issue If i didn't. I just wouldn't want them using it as a loophole for any insurance claims.

Also, would the SRI void my mazda warranty?

Just keep your OEM part and reinstall it if need be for a claim.

You should not have any issues with the warranty, or maybe just the MAF sensor. Again, I think it really depends which dealer you're going to. I drove 2 winters with mine, and I never had any issues.

I had one on my 3, on my protege, and now on my speed. It add a nice sound from the engine

Nope. Get a dryflow and it's as easy as rinsing it out and letting it dry.

Generally no, CAI's yes...but SRI will fail at about the same time the stock intake would anyway. Get a prefilter to help with minor splashes.

3) How much louder can I expect it to be in my vehicles cabin from this? I do a good mix of city and highway driving.
Cruising on the highway, no different...under WOT acceleration, yes and it's awesome and you will love it. Induction sounds way sexier than exhaust.

Heck no!

5) What kind of hit does it make against your fuel economy?
Hit or miss...technically it should be better but the point about #3 it sounding awesome will make you want to get on the throttle more and use more gas :)

Can't predict what they'd do, they always try to get out of it so luck of the draw...but an SRI is not safety related in any way.

be careful about which filter that comes with/you want to buy. although some filters are washable, some are known to get all fluffy and linty over time.

silverstarmazda SomeGuy do you have any recommendations? I've only taken a look at the CorkSport SRI, but i'm not afraid to spend more money for a superior product. If it makes a difference, it's for a 2014 Mazda 3 GT 2.5L engine.

Corksport is good, I wouldn't hesitate buying from them. There probably aren't many options for the 2014 yet anyway and Corksport supports the Mazda platform more than anyone (since they only build parts for Mazda).

the only thing i regret is paying full price for my intake. im gonna be totally honest here because an intake really doesnt do anything for a stock car.. other than making things a bit louder. the whole "power from air flow" thing is a over exaggerated for normal cars. you might get a slightly better throttle response but not enough to justify spending hundreds. the only part you pay for is the research that went into designing and manufacturing quality. as some cheap intakes will get you nothing but engines codes and trouble.

You're absolutely right, the performance gains on an NA car with no other modifications is going to be as good as squat. However the experience of hearing the induction noise (which some stupid manufacturers are synthesizing into the cabin these days *cough* BMW *cough*) is worth it alone, it makes enjoyment of getting on the throttle, even if you're not accelerating any quicker, a lot more fun. For that alone, get an intake :)

Anything else you guys can recommend for a bit of increase performance wise that would pair nicely with the SRI as far as a starting project for me? I'm not too interested in lowering it (yet) but I'm interested in other ideas!

an intake with a turbo on the end of it LOL. not much you can do to the engine without spending a boat load of money. plus your car so new at the moment there isnt much supporting mods out yet.

lol i figured as much. no big deal, I am really happy with it so far so now it's just fine tuning it to how i like it comfort wise.

The CS SRI made my 6 year old car fun again. I'm not going any faster but am enjoying driving more than I did before.

On a stock 3, you could go the suspension route. RSB, shocks/struts + springs or even coilovers but thats another bag of worms altogether. Check out $lickology's ride thread as he has been an early adopter of a lot of gen 3 mods.

I found someone selling their CorkSport SRI for the 2014 M3 GT 2.5L engine for around $130. They said it has around 100 KM on it. I asked the reason for selling and they said there was no reason other then they just didn't want to run it. Should I have any concerns buying this? Anything I should be inspecting on it before buying it?

I wouldn't be concerned... Best check the site and know the parts he should have with it.
I bought a k&n and was missing two brackets which prevented securing my intake to throttle body and installing the shield but run it without them anyways

Just found the ad your talking about... Looks good to me... Been up a month you may be able to barter a few pennies but seems good.

I noticed it vibrates while the engine is on due to the fact there is no support near the filter end of the SRI. should that be of any concern?

Also, no check engine light came on. Took it around the block twice. Is it safe to say that it's a good install or would it take awhile for the CE light to come on indicating an issue? Also, anything I need to do computer wise now that it's installed? (ie. reboot a system, etc.)

It sounds like a good install, and if you don't want it to vibrate I suggest the cold air box from corksport, otherwise the shaking is not a concern

I'll look into one of those. not sure if they are available yet for the 2014 GT...i'll grab one though if I find one. I made sure the MAF didn't have any seal pinching, the clamp is tight but not too tight. And pulling the stock intake out was quite painless actually.

I just looked and no they didn't have one
