Hi Everyone,

I am not sure if I just noticed it or if it just happened but the drivers side shocks are making a knocking sound when going over medium to large pot holes. The shock is not low, does not bounce and keeps it spring it just makes this thud or knock sound when going over bumps.

My brother thinks it could be the front strut mount is there anything else it could be? Also if it is the strut mount do I need to do an alignment? Lastly does anyone have a mechanic they can recommend in the east end.

Thanks Terry

my car just had a similar knock, when going over bumps or small holes.
it sounded like metal to metal kinda sound.
for me it was a $30 fix ( sway bar end link )

How can you tell if that is the issue??

jacked the car, took out the tire
located the endlink, and with moved it back and forth with my hands, it should not move, mine had minute play in it
i to thought it was the strut mounts, as the clunking was pretty noticeable, when going over bumps

how much do you want to bet its the top hat? pop the hood open and look at the top hat inside the shock mount, then compare it to the other side. youll notice one might be closer to the chassis than the other one. if so, the metal part of the top hat has broken and separated. the metal is not banging on the chassis

Would worn struts make similar noises?

worn struts would give you a bouncy feeling along with a leaking strut. but seeing as OP took it to a well known mechanic im sure it would of been easy to spot a blown strut. this is what was causing mine, and this is a problem that is "harder" to find because nothing looks out of place. except for what i mentioned in my post above.

edit for the post before. i meant "the metal is NOW banging on the chassis"

I had the exact same problem. Replaced my shocks and that did not fix it(they were old and not oem). Had to replace the endlinks because I had to cut mine off, thats how siezed they were. I had adjustable CS camber plates and the bearings ended up screwing off causing all this noise. However CS uses metal bearings and detecting that they were faulty was very difficult as it was barely noticeable.
