View Full Version : Cosworth or Crower Cams

Anyone mess with this stuff? I'm thinking next summer I start playing with the engine once all the bolt ons are done.
I just have to do more research to make sure the 2009 2.0 and the 2010 2.0 are the same engine. I have heard they are, but i need more proof.

what are your long term goals power wise?

I would like to get to160 - 170ish hp with a NA 2.0.

ionno 100% about the cosworth, but dont get the crower cams. they wont let you run the vvti system and you need to press on the stock cam trigger wheel which can be a pain.
imo start with full bolt ons and a tune. you want to go faster, strip the car. its cheaper and costs you nothing.

you will reach 150 - 160whp with header, high flow cat, cbe, and intake. according to o.v tune
And according to a few bolted n/a 3's that showed up to our dyno day, they all hit 140whp

Ok cool. I might see if if the 04-09 lightweight crank pulley will work on my 2010 sedan and lightweight flywheel. Might be able to hit the 150 with those ontop of the other bolt on mentioned here.

really? damn that sucks, matt got my hopes up. told me 150 - 160 was achievable. oh well.

There's a few updates to my tune that can be improved. You can also go 93 instead of 91

I think if i got a lightweight flywheel and crank pulley 150-160 would be achievable.

The Exedy lightweight flywheel? I have one - I don't have dyno numbers but it really makes absolutely zero noticeable difference, even in just neutral revving and engine speedup/down it's negligible at best, let alone real world driving. If you're getting 150whp with all those other mods and a tune you are NOT going to pick up another 10whp by changing only your flywheel and crank pulley. You won't even get 5.
Now if you're adding aftermarket cams that would change everything, but the pulley and flywheel won't have much of an effect no matter what.

Im definitely going to look into getting cosworth cams next summer, and then a tune.

changing the flywheel to a lighter aftermarket one and the crank pulley does not add hp... the fact you think it adds a bit. arg. what it does is let you get more power to the ground with the power you already have. less rotating mass, less work the engine has to do to get power to the wheels. crank power will not change, dyno whp will change a bit.
Rogreborn , all i gotta say is gl. the amount of money your gonna spend to get 20 whp is enough to buy a turbo kit that will net you real 50wtq+/50whp+. if you understand this, and still want to go n/a to learn more about your car and have fun with it, all the power to you from another n/a enthusiast.

I know i could do the turbo thing and probably get it done for, $2000-$3000, with some deal finding. Run like 8-10 psi boost and have 190-200whp. But i really would like to see how much i can get out of an NA motor. It might cost a bit more or come to the same amount for less whp, but it will be more fun!

Kiyomi, why do you think I said WHP. I know it does not change crank hp. I am calibrating and tuning engines for one of the Big 3 (full-time) and tune high-power cars as a hobby on the side as well as tuning Formula SAE cars when I was at school - I think I know what will and will not affect a cars power output and in what manner it should affect the engine/power curves. Not to mention this is in addition to 6+ years of hands-on racecar/high-hp car building experience - I know what a lightweight flywheel does ;)

thats fine. as long as you understand what your getting into. plus, max your gonna make on the 2.0l with full bolt ons, cams, and even if you pnp, will most likely be max 170

:pop now that weve got your resume for everyone to see. lets get back to the cam issue. do you think that adding a cam is worth it if it takes out the vvti system?

ROTMFF, LOL. Is the pot calling the kettle black. I remember when I told you the same thing and you told me you wanted to stay NA. LOL. Now you go on acting like a big shot to another member. How does it feel to drink the truth syrup. When I told you not to bother with NA you made it seem like it was some righteous goal. Now you are go on hating another guy for thinking the same thing.
FYI, you can get about 250whp if you remove the VVT system and run straight cams. But you need a standalone. So don't pretend like you know what your talking about. Some of us actually got their built motor on the track before blowing it up. Your's did what 5mins after starting, yet you pretend you are a motor expert now.
You and the Pokemon kid should get off your high horse.
Mod God, seriously you make it sound like you actually got something working on your own. LOL. But I guess greatness is it's own reward, I would tell myself that too after all the self inflicted fail.
Rogreborn, if you want to meet up for coffee I'll tell you straight what's involved and how much it will cost you. After that you can make your own decisions for your mod path.

i really dont know why you have all this built up hate for me and the pokemon kid. i asked for your help to change the motor the first time and you never showed up or responded to my texts after you agreed to help me. i even offered money for your time and tools. stfu with your nator bullshit. your advice has cost me thousands. WHERE the **** were you when i needed and asked for help? you arent an enthusiast anymore. all your posts are complaints against other members, or just bitching about everything. you told me to go to competition automotive and look what happened. dont hate on me because you cant drive at the track and cant get under 1:26 with more than 300whp/wtq. then u get pissed off and sell or part out your speed cause u cant drive faster and get an frs. that to me is the biggest joke of all.
what exactly did i say right now to piss you off. i suggested that it would cost more to go n/a to get alot of power. if the op is fine with that and not going turbo, i said go for it! just wanted to see if he knew what he was getting into. instead of harping on people who are trying to help, actually ****ing help.
oh yeah, and btw. if you have all this to say to me. why didnt u come over at the last sigma event. you saw me and never even came over 5 FEET and said hi or said any of this to my face. grow a set.
as for why your angry at what i put on my signature, thats really weird. i try to help anybody who has a question unlike you. mod god is an inside joke with a few of the other members, and the quote is from a friends nephew which i thought was awesome. if you take it personally, you have got alot of issues CelestSpeed3

Let's see, nobody mentioned the N word.
So I'm not allowed to go to work with a full time job. I can only help when I can. Sorry if you felt stranded. My advise cost you thousands eh, you sure it wasn't the guy who I stalled your motor. Oh wait, that was all on you. I don't recall seeing you at the last Sigma event. Don't take it personally, I had to head to worm before the day was done.
Where do you come off saying I'm a bad driver that's why I'm selling my speed. LoL. Here son take a seat, grown ups have a thing called mortgages and houses. Tracking the Speed is simply too expensive the FRS is cheaper, that's the reason. So don't go making assumptions. FYI an FRS motor is half the cost of a Mazdaspeed motor, maybe you should get one too.
Why you so mad bro?

im partially mad at myself and dissapointed in you. i trusted your advice and your skills. when someone asks for help and you agree, i feel that it is that persons obligation to help. better later than never. but later never came, you know what im saying?
everyone has things in their lives that make them busy. it doesnt mean you can drop them like a rock after you just said you would help. it certainly doesnt mean insulting someone online for trying and failing on an engine build. i tried it, it didnt work out, and ive learned alot from it. i try to help others with what i know. i dont know everything, and yes you know more about motors than myself. this is just how i feel and i really dont like what you just said. understand that.

Next Spring. I'm prepping the garage over the winter.
Its far cheaper to operate then the Speed. Less power is less fuel, less weight is less brakes and tires

You will spend gobs of cash attempting to make an economy engine go fast with no boost, plz save yourself the trouble... Unless you feel like strippin it to the block and replacing everything... Then addin some custom itb's and tuning the shit outta it... Even then 250 whp might be a dream... Would run like a friggin god built it though... Or just go boost... Or buy a better platform to begin with....
