Following the shooting here in Ottawa?

Confirmed 1 man dead in the halls of our Parliament buildings...

Rumours of a 2nd shooter near the Chateau Laurier and a third possibly on the roof of a building downtown.

All buildings in the area are in lockdown.

Shots are still being fired as of right now. My girlfriend is 2 blocks away from the latest shot.

Quite scary.

For all those in downtown Ottawa stay indoors!

Just saw this;

RT @josh_wingrove: Police source has told a Globe colleague of mine that a second shooter has been shot.

Terrible. Thoughts are with the soldier's family, and I hope the other two wounded pull through.
Any ID on the gunman?

The news reported that someone was close enough they got a clear picture of the 1st person, they were swiftly moved to police cover.

Kitchener City Hall was on lockdown yesterday too. Doubt it was terrorism though. But no where seems safe these days..

I will keep what I want to say to myself, as it will likely get me into trouble. So I will just say may this brave man rest in peace. Those responsible be found and brought to justice.

EDIT: Soldier was just identified as Cpl Nathan Cirillo, RIP

I was watching Anderson cooper last night and he was live in ottawa. He interviewed a dude that works in the area of Parliament hill. The dude was explaining how he heard 4 shots and didn't know what it was. Then he goes on to saying only once that he was going to call 911 and take to social media to post the events. Through out the interview all he kept saying afterwards was taking to social media a few times. I was wondering why? Why is it so important for him to do that in a potentially life or death situation. I guess this relates to this thread and to the humanity thread

If you thought that was questionable, this individual takes it to a new level (http://www.mediaite.com/online/learn-how-to-behave-anderson-cooper-shuts-down-selfie-seeker/) by asking for a selfie with AC. It was declined for obvious reasons and the twit went on a twittering rant against Anderson.

“No, I will not take a photo with you on a day where someone was killed! It seems wildly inappropriate!”
Just Rob Ford does that.

Even still, he is there to do a job, not take pics with fans.. Some people need a social media vacation. A long one.

The threat level was at medium before yesterday's shooting. Highest it had been in 4 years.

My aunt and uncle both work in the parliament building and luckily both were ok but they were in a lunch room watching everything unfold from the tv. They ended up having to be escorted out by police to the shuttle buses to quebec and leave their car downtown.

I guess this relates to this thread and to the humanity threadI think you're absolutely right, this does relate to the humanity thread in a major way.

This is a big tragedy and is really messed up, but a lot of Canadian forces have died overseas and its like second page news and is forgotten overnight.
One reservist gets shot on Canadian soil and suddenly its all over social media and people start freaking out. Seems a bit hypocritical, no?

People here are so detached from the big picture, living in their little social media bubbles....

There I said it. Flame away.

I cannot believe trudeau. Good on Harper for finally saying the word "terrorist." Canadians need to realize that not all people are good.

I hear the threat level is fuchsia with a dash of cyan and a possibility of turquoise later during the day.

I know about most overseas I'd say. Hearing it being reported on the news when there is a death. If they report all the deaths. What makes this more tragic is it happened here at home! Unfortunately, this needs to be taken as a hard lesson and we all need to learn from this and especially.

Well, Wednesday night I heard something on the news. Someone said something and that person may have made a good point. Because Canada is over seas involved in the isis battle it was sort of retaliation

We're barely involved. These events are the result of a couple of twisted individuals upset at the government and the west on general, even though they enjoy all the freedoms of living here. It's in no way an organized retaliation (not necessarily what you were saying, just refuting that line of reasoning).

I disagree on the hyprocritical part, people will always sensationalize something that hits close to home. It is unfortunate that alot of the terrible things that go on these days don't get a lot of attention....but then again I don't want to live life like it's CNN....

If you were in the halls of Parliament Hill at the same time this all went down I'm sure we'd be hearing all about it.....from you

World is in a sad state of affairs...has been for quite some time now and it is sad.

To be honest I like living in a "bubble" because I like feeling safe for my wife and kids. Once you don't forget that we have things really good here...

and also how he supported the muslim community thats not part of ISIS, as hate crime is very possible as a result of this at local religious centers.
And if you think that stuff only happens in America. There have been cases of vandalism with hate speech etc at my local mosque so the ignorance is still very alive in Canada... the media just does the right thing and ignores most of them.

how about we just leave religion out of it. It is bound to cause a shit storm. The important thing is a brave young man was murdered, we should be focusing on his memory.

agreed, i'v been in contact with the recruitment office in Hamilton, and go for the application process the next time I have a Friday off from work. Action is needed, however, on social media sites there is nothing to be gained from pointless words and debate. Remembrance and support for that fallen reservist is a much more productive output as in regard to comments.

What boggles my mind is why everyone in this world can't get along?!? We're all human and these days religion is such an antiquated ideology that brainwashes fanatics into doing absurd things. Not one religion on this planet asks people to harm others.

If you want to waste some time reading about a different thought on religion, read these two (in order):
http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/10/how-religion-got-in-the-way.html
http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/10/religion-for-the-nonreligious.html

Yeah, maybe hypocritical wasn't the best choice of words, but I just get annoyed by all of the people "farming social media for likes" (for a lack of a better term), as if that was the only thing that mattered in the world. Also, it's one thing if you were there in person and wanted to share your experiences (yes, you're right, I would do that too), but living on the other side of the country and re-posting articles like crazy as if it was the first time a Canadian soldier had been killed at the hands of extremists is just silly.

Does that mean Hot Fuzz is based on a true story?

Anyways, I think it's a little embarrassing that he got as far as he did into the Parliament buildings. I'm sure it's down to human error, rather than poor security planning...

Think about it: you train and train and train for that hypothetical day when the shit hits the fan, but as the days go by you become complacent. Rather than manning your post, you step out to take a bathroom break, or chat with a coworker, not worried at all that a gunman could be coming in..
