I\'ve looked pretty much everywhere for this stuff! Im around 20k km now, so I want to switch soon. Can anyone tell me where in the GTA you found it?

Canadian Tire ~$7.69/L

is that the best oil for the 3?
is that the best price for the best oil for the 3?
how soon can you switch to synthetic?
thanks

That is one of the best oils out there. Porsche uses it straight out of the factory. You can switch to synthetic any time you\'d like.

wow that was quick bluntman..
looks like MOE and MTO is pretty slow today ;) :D
i thought u\'r supposed to drive for a while (1500mi) on regular oil.. THEN switch.. same place that tells you to break the car in the hard way here (http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)

i just put in Mobil 1 0w20 today after 17,000kms.
the 3 has semi-synthetic from the factory and dealership so switching to full synthetic is not an issue after the initial break-in period.

If you switch to synthetic.... what do you do when you go for an oil change at the dealership?
just give them the bottle and tell them to use that instead of the genuine stuff? Does it affect how often you do your oil change? is one bottle enough?

Yeah just bring your oil and tell your service advisor that you\'re supplying your own oil. The 3 takes in 4.5 litres of oil so I would suggest you buy 5 or 1 4L jug and 1 single.

what about how often you get the oil change? Isn\'t synthetic supposed to last longer than normal oil?

That\'s what a lot of people say but what I\'ve always done in the past was change my oil every 5,500km. Mainly because I drove the car hard and took it to the track once a month.
Does the synthetic oils turn darker colour after prolonged use (ie. 8,000km under \"normal\" driving)? If so we COULD kind of use that as a guide as to when to go in for oil change (of synthetic).

You should never wait till it turns dark. The best method is to go by the recommened service interval. I would just check the oil level once in a while.

Syn oil lasts much longer than conventional, breakdown period is extended much further but at the point of break down you will lose many agents that are vital in the syn oil. conventional oil breaks down progressively losing agents at a slower rate.
you can use syn oil for max 10-15K but don\'t forget that the oil filter is not made of synthetic material and would require changing at regular intervals. another option is using a premium oil filter (fram has a line available) but you may not be able to find the correct application for mazda 3

secondly being a oil change specialist for 5 years, i would not recommend 0w20.
simply b/c we do not live in arctic temperatures (may feel like it at times)

the fact that mobil1\'s 0w20 is getting better UOAs than the 5w30 (and others) at bobistheoilguy is proof enough that it works, even in non-arctic conditions (most of the people who\'ve submitted the blackstone tests are from the southern states and samples have been taken through the spring/summer)

Hi guys,
You could also buy Mobil 1 @ Walmart. They sell a 4.4L jug there. I use to buy it there for my Focus at the time. I\'ve used Mobil 1 for 3 1/2 years on my focus, but the thing that I found that it seaps through seals. It\'s very minimal, but it does happen.

better in what sense .. its still 0w20, the viscosity is still 0 at cold temp.
i guess one could argue that the lighter weight oil will get to critical engine parts at cold start, and it has the 20 weight @ ambient temp which is sufficient for the mazda 3
to meet the lastest battery of emissions testing, 5w20 was created. i am not sure how 0w20 effects emission controls, i presume as the lighter weight oil may burn of excess hydrocarbons at cold start.
just a guess though.

in a multi-grade oil, the lower number represents the viscosity at 0F (-17.8C)...the higher number represents the viscosity at 212F (100C).
at current ambient temps, 5w20 and 0w20 oil will theoretically have the same viscosity.
5w20 was \"created\" for use by Ford and Honda to gain an extra MPG in fuel consumption ratings for CAFE EPA regulations. it was not for emission controls.
one of the benefits of a less viscous oil is that there is less friction between the moving parts, resulting in less fluid \"drag\", resulting in a slightly more powerful and efficient engine.
also, reducing hydrocarbon emissions is performed by the pre-catalytic converters that sit prior to the main catalytic. the pre-cats are closer to the exhaust headers so they heat up quicker and thus can catalyize the exhaust gases faster on cold start-ups.

so then why would you use 0w20 if 5w20 gives better mileage?
is it performance? longevity? got a link to spare you the babble? thanks

because Mobil1\'s equivalent for 5w20 is 0w20 (it meets both Ford and Honda specs/regs for a 5w20 type of oil). If Mobil1 made a 5w20, i\'d be using that instead.

thats great.
glad to see someone stays on top of this oil business.
i will stick with my 5w20 all year round. i have no use for 0w20
looks like you stuck it to me good.

hmm.. went to crappy tire
0w20
1L bottle 7.99
4L jug 33.99 (or 32.99) forget now
so what;s the point.. buy 4x1L :) it\'s cheaper.. now someone mentioned here earlier but i can\'t find it. how much oil (in liters pls) does the 2.3 engine take?
