I\'ve changed the speakers on my 3. In the front I have a pair of Alpine SPX-177a 6.5\" component speakers and in the rear I have a pair of Alpine SPR-134a coaxials. I have an Alpine 4 channel amp running those speakers and a separate Alpine mono amp running the single Alpine 10\" sub in the cargo area. I don\'t know about wattage, all I know is that it is enough for my tastes. :D

im thinkin of puttin components in the front and back i saw these nice infinities at futureshop there 300 a pair they can handle up to 270 watts each so its pretty goood my 4 channel will over power them but as long as a i keep the gain low im fine my 4 channel amp is that p4004 the new fossgate it has max watts of 1900 and change i also need to get 2 caps along wit that.... i got another amp an 1 yr old fosgate amp i 4got the model number but its 800 watts i hooked it up to 2 mtx 12\'s in a ported hatchback box.
but n e wayz do u think its a smart idea to put components in the back aswell?

No, components in the back would be a waste of money.

I don’t know how you guys pulled it off, but my attempt to remove the driver’s side door-panel off, only managed to fill my swear-jar with lots of coins. I figured the hardest would be pulling the panels off without breaking the clips, but after I was able to unattached 2 or 3 at a time, I thought the manual window handle would just pull off. I didn’t know how much force it would take to pull the handle off, but it wasn’t going to move, and I was afraid of breaking it right off. I was stuck trying to get the top part of the panel back on, and accidentally pulled the rubber molding off, and made a nice bend. I did my best to make it straight, and managed to get it back on, but underneath was pins that had to be bend to hold the molding in place, they were impossible to see while the molding was in place, and had to feel my way. I was still struggling with the top part, as there were plastic flaps on the panel, which had to be lifted over the metal frame of the door. I started from the right, but as I moved over, the start would pop off again. It was hard to snap into place, as there was something forcing the panel downwards. After a few attempts, and using a screwdriver to pull up each flap, I managed to fit the top into place. And of course, some of the clips that hold the panel to the door, were still in the door, and I had to use a screwdriver to pry them out, but the easy part was sliding the clips back into the panel. After that, it was just a mater of snapping the panel back in place, looks almost normal now, just the molding is a bit loose, but the window pushes it back, so it looks okay. So I am going to live with the factory speakers, and to whoever was able to replace the speakers, I salute you.

i took off the door panel a few weeks ago to see how hard it was it was kinda tricky and then i broke a few clips and then when i went to mazda for my first service (4000 km) they were actin quite hostile and asking why I would take off my door panel... prima mazda:sarc

So 6.5 components fit in the front door?

I\'ve checked with crutchfield and it states that 6.5s dont fit up front, but rather 5.25\" or 6x8s up front....

6.5\" components will fit in the front doors. You have to make templates about 1/4\" thick to fit the components. I\'ve had Lockdown Security put in my Kaption Audio MPT-5.25 components last weekend(these are Kaptions top end components) and they sound amazing with 45 watts going to them. The best money I\'ve spent.

is there a huge difference in sound quality with 5.25 and 6.50???
id imagine you will get a bit more midbass from the 6.50s

Mazdatree why would you drive component speakers with a 1900 WATT amp? Anyway I just installed a pair of infinity kappa components in the front and infinity co-ax in the rear all running off a rockford 700x amp and it sound spectacular.

DO NOT BUY stuff from futureshop. My speakers are $300 there and I got them off ebay for $60USD. Being canadian rules with the exhange rate as well. I am in the market for an amp and sub to go with my system. Dont blow thousands on a system. Start slow do things in chunks.

So you want to put 1900W amp hooked to the fronts, and 800W to the subs? HUH? lol... 1900W amp is a WASTE of money for that application. Also I second the fact you shouldnt buy from FS or BB.

wow all this speaker talk is making me want to change the stock set up!

Im a newbie when it comes to speaker components tho... what should I start with if I were looking to upgrade the stock set up??

speakers, amp then sub?

bluntman

Screw it, do it all at once! Seriously, that\'s the right order to do things, but usually doing the speakers along with a 4 channel amp at the same time is even better. Adding a mono amp and a sub afterwards to that set-up is quite easy.

hmmmmm...so im guessing that each speaker needs its own channel?

yeah, initialy i wanted to do it all at once, but thats gonna cost a lot of cash so i thought about doing it step by step.

we\'ll see how my financial situation developes over the next month though, if it improves then ill do it all at once.

btw, any good car audio stores that offer good prices for parts, quality service and instalation??

Talk to Jeff at Lockdown. Great services and excellent prices for install.
I would get a good set of components for the front and a pair of coaxial for the back doors. Run all of these speakers off a good quality four channel amp that has at least around 50 Watts RMS at 4 ohms.
Make sure that you use a 4 gauge power line to the amp. You can actually put a distribution block then run the wire to the amp. This makes it easier to hook up a separate amp for the sub.

im bringing back this thread from the dead muahahha
any ways i got a question for you guys who changed your speakers....
when you took out the stock speakers did you guys remove the plastic shield attached to the speaker?
i took my back ones out today and then after installing the aftermarket speakers i came inside to warm up and then i peeled the plastic piece off with a flathead screwdriver tomorrow i might install the plastic piece under the aftermarkets to shield them from what ever...
did anyone else do this?

Yeah I did, I mounted them to my custom brackets. Just for added protection really and to clear my mind of it all.

You can also wrap duct tape around the basket of the speaker, but when I had my speakers installed I insisted on the putting water shields around all of the speakers. Beats having to buy new speakers after every rainfall. :D
