Hi, I went to Active Green and Ross to check on minor raddle noise coming from front of car when driving on bumpy road. They confirmed my suspicion that the front struts needed to be replaced and the cost would be approx. $1,250 including the cost for alignment ($89). My question is this a good price or should I shop around?

I drive a Mazda 3 GT 2009.

Definitely shop around. That price is exceedingly high.

Way too high.

Struts are $261 for the pair from the dealer.
Labour is 2.5 hours for the pair. So say $250ish depending or the rate.
Alignment @$90

Do you have a detailed list of everything from the estimate? Does it need stab links, mounts, strut bearings?

If that price is for all shocks and springs installed, that's about right. But it's stupid for one.
As you should replace the front pair.

Just had my front struts replaced on my 2007 Mazda 3 GT last month at my local Mazda dealer in Ontario.

Labor was 1.3 hours $129.94

Strut cost was:

BBM2-34-700C DAMPER RT $118.72
BBM2-34-900C DAMPER-LT $141.75

Total $390.41 before HST - $441.16 after HST

I was not charged for any alignment, but the car drives fine.

If you had both done for 1.3 you just got a 2 for 1 special on the dealer. 1.3 is for one only.

Also you should have a alignment done.

The estimate I received is not detailed. It is for the pair. I do see that the labour cost is significant, like approx $300

Get a second opinion from another shop

Purchase the parts yourself with TM3 discount and have another reputable shop do the install

I would recommend APH or Street Performance

Or find out which dealership this was, that's a pretty good price

Jimmy can do the front shocks in about 20 mins, I've watched him. So a dealer charging 1.3 hours is not farfetched

Oh no doubt some guys are fast, but a dealer charging less than book time is a great deal. Or maybe that is their TM3 shop time.

The labour rate of 99.95/hr seems cheap compared to MoT's at 119.95/hr

not necessary to do an alignment on strut suspension cars, as long as parts are disassembled right
is it better to do it? yes

but if you're broke and just need to get going, but safely... you can skip the alignment... it won't be that much off unless potholes have killed the alignment in the first place

Update: I went to Ortis Automotive Centre at Weston and Rogers Rd. We did a test drive together and he mentioned it may be a bushing. They will inspect further. They also said it is premature for struts to be replaced for my car (Mazda 3 2009).

Active Green and Ross (on Kipling) never did a test drive...

BTW thank you for your feedback.

1.3 hours easily...it's not a complicated or time consuming job.
