If I put my 2008 Mazda3 in my garage after driving on wet roads I will have a problem the following morning when
I reverse out. The brakes make a loud screeching noise while I am reversing with some light pressure on the
brake pedal. After using my brakes while driving forward the noise stops. I have asked for advice from a
couple of maintenance shops (including a Mazda dealer) who have told me that the noise is caused by rust
and that it is not serious and does not indicate a brake problem. The noise is very loud and I am sure it is
disturbing my neighbours.
Do other Mazda3 owners have the same problem?

This is well known and not a Mazda only issue. Not really an issue at all. The information you were provided is correct. As a result of the material used in the brake pads, until the surface rust is burned off, they will screech a bit.
You could change your pads to a different material, but you would decrease your braking performance.

As Ami mentioned, it happens to most cars in general.
Nothing more embarrassing than your ride looking nice and clean... and you drive it out after it's been sitting and hearing the brakes screech for the fist bit. I've had the neighbors dog back at me for this.

A half decent set of coated rotors and ceramic pads will get rid of this, mostly, or even easier you could just back into your spot when parking for the night.
