View Full Version : Ambiant Temperature Sensor
Xenon

We all have stared into that empty space beside our radio station in our dash... well I want to fill it.
Anyone know where I can buy the Ambiant Temperature Sensor?
Flipspeed... is there a way to order it through the dealership?

I looked this connector and the ATS up in the catalog and it\'s not available up here.

I want it to show my L/100km rating. If you look at the left side you can see the outline for it on the LCD.

Those who read through the mazda3forums thread may have seen my posts. You can get the sensor if you really want to. For the ambient temp sensor, I asked the parts guys at Ontario Mazda regarding part #: G518-61-764. At that time (probably still holds true today), there were 0 of these in Canada because it isn\'t used on any Canadian-spec Mazda. However, they told me they could order it (it\'d just take 6 weeks or something long like that, I actually don\'t remember the exact timeframe that was mentioned). Price is $54.17cdn. It also took them a LONG time to find this part on their system - they only found it on their most global/widespread parts-finder (obviously I am not familiar with Mazda\'s parts systems, so the terminology I used may be incorrect, but you get the gist of it).
I didn\'t order it - because even if I did, there\'s nothing to connect to (wiring harness is different in N. American-spec). The consensus from that mazda3forum thread is that it\'ll have to be some sort of hack for N. American-spec Mazda3 (i.e. to make our own wire connection from the sensor to whereever the sensor would connect to on non-N. American cars). This is why that thread keeps mentioning getting the wiring diagrams from overseas manuals.
I personally think it\'ll take a co-ordinated effort including:
- some Mazda techs that have access to N. American Mazda3 manuals as well as experience with these vehicles
- a car to work on
- someone with the wiring diagrams from a Mazda3 with the temp sensor wiring harness
We\'d need all these people working together and experimenting solutions to possibly get this to work. Since we have a presence here from Avante, perhaps if we all agree to do a massive group buy that will give them enough motivation to get all the necessary things together (what I mentioned above), find a solution, and if it works we all agree to buy it and have them install it for us! I\'d be the first one to sign-up for that.

There\'s a simpler solution...black electrical tape...to cover up the right hand side of the LCD. ;)

I would be in for a group buy for a working installed temperature sensor.

Absolutely... that we be cool. I think it\'s dumb that they didn\'t offer this feature here in Canada... I mean even the Corolla has had it for a couple of years!!!

Hmm, that\'s six people. So assuming everyone is willing to pay $150cdn to have it installed ($150 is the approximate price for the Mazda3 block heater and installation), that gives $900cdn in revenue already.
If the Xenon or other mod can make this a sticky or otherwise highlight this thread, we\'ll likely get even more people and maybe a dealership can investigate this - the potential is there...

\"The other mod\" has made this a sticky. :sarc
I thought this thread was about the ambient air temperature sensor not the block heater...I\'m confused. :(

I was referring to the fact that the block heater including installation costs approximately $150cdn, so I think that would be a fair price to pay in this case (ambient temp. sensor + any wires needed, including installation).
And being that my last post was done in a hurry, you\'d notice the final sentence was gramatically incorrect anyways - what I meant was Xenon or any other mod

Depending on the price, I may be in.. I don\'t think that its worth paying $200 for a thermometer ;)
But it is strange that its not offered here in Canade. The Honda CRVs have the temperature sensor so that the driver will know if theres a chance of ice (if the temp is below 0). According to the salesman its not available in the US because in most of the US it doesn\'t get much cold weather (maybe BS, but who knows..).

It has been un-stickified :p

I\'m not really interested in this feature myself....but to help out you might want to investigate the possibility if the wiring and sensor parts from a Mazda6 will fit our cars because it does come with this feature...and the display on the dash looks almost identicle;)
From what I have read on other forums, and I don\'t remember which one, that \"thing\" is a standard feature on AUSTRALIAN Mazda 3\'s.... So contact someone in Australia at a dealer and get them to send us some details...
Personally I don\'t see why they\'d need a temp sensor down under, since it would only need to show \"HOT\"...

It would be nice to have that feature up here. Then the car would cost $30,000 and up.

I like that interiror better too... red letters on a black display...
our LCD is nice, but not as nice as the photo above.
I like that text-light-up better than our back-light-up too... it looks more classy in the above photo. I have a feeling there is no way to mod our LED panel into this style?
I like it too...I wonder if there\'s a way to do a retrofit...
Anyone know any Jap Axela owners who wouldn\'t mind swapping parts? LOL

I like it beacuse it looks like the numbers are hovering in the darkness....
we have this big orange backlight strip in the display... those numbers just seem to hover there. Looks kewl http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons6/16.gif

In that case, yes.
I believe Temp sensor is out of the question for our cars since:
You will have to change the whole LCD display if what I believe is right.
Please look at the pictures HERE (http://calin.cjb.net/tm3/) and see that place on the left of the LCD that has the numbers from 1-0...
I think that is the place where a connector would go if we had this option avaiable...
Can anyone take apart a mazda 6 and see wtf is behind the lcd screen?

Why would you have to change the LCD? all the numbers and stuff are there already...
You can see this if you crank the contrast up on your display.
I know the numbers are there, but I think that in thatr place where the 1-0 are printed there should have been another connector to supply the information for that part of the display...
Yah I am bringing this topic back from the dead.
stumbled across this on cardomain and thought it might actually be possible, just a matter of finding a part number for that connector the guy refers too because I believe we dont have it. Never checked though so we might, not sure. anyways...

hmm intresting, can\'t see it being so plug and play tho...hmmm
Mayhem

It\'s not plug and play like that in our cars. This was covered on Mazda3forums. That car is in Singapore....their cars already come pre-wired for the sensor, they just don\'t all have the sensor. So for them, you just buy the sensor and plug it in.
Here in NA, we don\'t have the wiring harness (including the grey connector to plug the sensor into) that leads from in front of the radiator to the fuse box and to the LCD display. The only way to do it would be to purchase the wiring harness and install it. Unfortunately that costs a few grand, so it\'s not worth it unless you have tons of cash to blow.

yah thats what I was mentioning about getting that harness but for a couple grand I like my other method to know the weather.
Depending on the speed you run to your car decides how cold or hot it is!!! :p

Damn, this is bad news......I was really hoping to be able to install this feature in my wife\'s future 3. My 6 is the first car we\'ve owned that had it and we find it so useful.
Well, if anyone ever figures it out I\'d be willing to pay for it too.
