It\'s a little late in the season to be thinking about this, but I thought I\'d ask everyone\'s opinion anyway. It is a good idea to get a moonroof air deflector? There are too many Cons in my book, but the Pro is so enticing!

Pro
-open air motoring without the wind buffetting noise

Con
-may scratch the paint over time
-must remove every winter
-must remove before car wash

What do you think? Feel free to add to the list.

I will have one installed when I get my 3 in March. Mainly to cut down on the noise but I just make it a point to get one if my car has a sunroof.

On my Z24, my moonroof opened outside the car, which acted as a bit of a deflector in itself, because of where the air hit...I didn\'t have much noise of wind resistance. I\'ve found iwth my 3 that because it open inside the car, that its VERY noisy, and I can feel more resistance.

No matter what though, I can\'t stand the look of the deflectors..I think they are so ugly! To each their own of course, but I won\'t ever get one.

I totally agree.... I think deflectors ruin the lines of the car. My Mom\'s WRX came with one as a free dealer goodie.... I took it off with her permission.... she agrees that she likes it better without. She actually wants me to sell it on eBay.

But that\'s another reason why I was looking to get an air deflector. With the moonroof open and the small air deflector in position, the wind buffetting noise is unacceptable.

for me, when I open the moon/sunroof fully, acceptable wind noise as I expect, but if I tilt it, it has high frequency noise which is too noisy.

This is why you crank your music up loud enough to drown out the sunroof :p

The deflector is the same one on all models and is shared with the Mazda6. There are two clips that hook under the sheet metal of the roof. Two bolts are then fastened into the other end of these hooks and this holds the deflector down.

I\'ve had it on for a few months and I can\'t believe I didn\'t have one during the first summer with my car. When the weather is good my sunroof is open and this helps out quite a lot. I\'m glad I bought it, especially when I did because when I first enquired it was over $100, now it\'s down to the $60 range (with Club Discounts from Avante).

Does it cut don on the wind noise on the highway? This would be a nice father\'s day present for myself.:p

It\'s a lot better than without the deflector.

The deflector may cut down on the wind noise. But, have you actually noticed how small the sunroof is? When I saw the compairison (with and without) I couldn\'t justify wanting the deflector which takes about 1/4 of your sunroof away from you.
If you can live with the air noise, then I say don\'t even think of getting the deflector. If you can\'t live with the noise, why bother having the sunroof in the first place?

The pop up deflector works well - the outside aftermarket deflector is a needless expense IMHO.
