Makes sense to me...they carry the same stuff at the same prices with the sames sales at the same time. Why brand is separately? It's not like they were actually competing so we aren't losing anything.
*insert some corny joke here about not having a place to shop at in the future*
But yea, like SomeGuy said, it's not really like we as customers lose out on much. Aside from maybe the inconvenience of some shops closing, or some shops being temporarily closed for the renovations/changes.

The one by my house is closing, and it was only built a few years ago. That's gotta be costly.

They must be Following the overly successful target Canada business model.

me and my buddy went to the Krispy Kreme today and were so confused why the parking lot was so empty. This explains a lot

It was supposed to be for consumer choice. Future Shop was a traditional commission-based sales structure while Best Buy had non-commission staff. So you got to choose whether you wanted to browse the store without feeling pressured by the staff versus having someone there to help you make decisions.
A family friend is/was a manager at the Future Shop by the Eaton's Centre, and was offered a choice between severance and the same job he was doing before at the Best Buy that will open there soon (for more money). Not too shabby of a deal for him.

They didn't have sales at the same time which meant you could always price match against each other plus 10% of the difference
Also when it comes to audio they carry different brands

Audio brands? No, just slightly different models from the same brands which you couldn't price match between. Otherwise anything they both had would go on at the same time, every time...not sure why you think otherwise.

I think otherwise because I'm right
But now you will never know because their website is no more
An example would be Best Buy used to sell Yamaha receivers while Future Shop focussed on Denon and Pioneer
Best Buy also did not carry Energy speakers but would carry the Klipsch models. The subwoofer selection was also completely different. Best Buy did not carry Martin Logan
And yes they did not have sales on at the same time

Obviously minor differences...but for the most part I'm right if you looked at more than just home audio.
It's the same commerce server with 2 catalogs that may share the same products. I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed all products to Best Buy now.
The gift cards were always usable for both stores interchangeably

agreed
but I remember 5 years ago when I bought my Tom Tom GPS (don't know why I ever needed that), I price matched against Best Buy because Future Shop had it on sale for about $150 bucks less, so I got it 165 bucks cheaper at Best Buy. It never made sense to me and I'm surprized the 2 stores coexisted for this long
Good to know about the warranty as I have a 9 year warranty on all my home audio speakers
But at the end of the day I much preferred going into Future Shop over Best Buy provided you could fight off the commissioned sales persons at FS

Why did you prefer FS to BB? I don't feel all that different about either store.
Also, happy about the warranty being covered, bought a TV there with a 4 year plan to protect against burn in on my plasma.

I liked the colours FS used in their stores vs. The blue and yellow of best buy. The Best Buy stores feel cheap to me

Never thought of it feeling cheap, I just always used FS cause they were 4 minutes away from my place, compared to 15 away to Best Buy. When I was living in Cambridge, it didn't matter as Future Shop and Best Buy were in the same plaza just separated by a Wal-Mart and Staples.

It's just the impression I get and the way I feel in the stores. Doesn't make it true

thats interesting because I always thought Best Buy was the more expensive one.
Also anyone know if the one at Hwy 7 and Jane (across from the walmart) is getting shut down or rebranded. As long as they keep that location I will be happy. Although I rarely go to Futureshop anymore ( Canada Computers usually have better prices), they sometimes do carry a bigger selection than the other not so technology driven stores.

I'm the opposite, I never liked going to FS because of the haggling sales associates.
Best Buy always gave me the feeling that I could just go in there and browse freely.

I spent so much time/money in Futureshop that the guys who worked there knew to leave me alone and when I was ready I would find them and they'd make good commission LOL

Fudge......TigerDirect @Queensway is closing.
Never understood the rational of keeping all those Futureshop locations open, especially the ones so close to the BestBuy.

For example eglinton and warden there across the street from eachother. No idea why they did that.

I worked at FS for a short but fun stint a while ago, just when Best Buy bought them out. Rumour back then was that they would shut down most FS stores and consolidate some others. I'm amazed it took this long, to tell you the truth.
loki They used to sell Yamaha and Energy at FS. I used to push that shit like crazy, as I love Yamaha receivers and worked at Audio Products Int. and knew the quality of their speakers...I managed to pick up the RVS/RVSS surround system and Mirage BPS250i bipolar sub while I worked at API, plus a couple other sets of speakers, 2nds and 3rds; minor blemishes, but at a fraction of list.

I was saying they didn't sell Energy at Best Buy. All my speakers are Energy, bought while they were still manufactured here in Canada

I was more focussing on the Receiver comment, sorry I wasn't clear, and yeah I was pretty disappointed when Klipsch bought out API. Another great Canadian company bought out by a foreign conglomerate. I worked at API and actually had a hand in building the speakers I bought, back when they were still designed and built right here off Markham road and we had some of the best speaker engineers in the world here.
Anyways back on topic...

There is nothing to prevent you from starting your own speaker company, provided that the manufacturing details are fresh in thy memory......
