View Full Version : HIDs or LEDs?

I'm contemplating getting HID fogs or just go with LED because I've heard that fog light hids have so many problems and fixing them constantly becomes a hassle. But from what I gather is that if you install it right and mount the balases correctly there shouldn't be issues right?
And on a side note, does anybody know where I could get some good LED White DRLs that are bright enough? This is for a gen 1 ms3

I ran corksport ones for 1.5years loved them and pretty bright. Sold em to a member few months back and switched to yellow fogs cuz racekar. HID fogs some issues with ballast not firing up on first attempt in winter. Flicking on/off few times but worked.

To add to that, I'm sure you could probably pick the same bulbs that corksport uses from one of our sponsors for much less considering the dollar right now + import charges. That's what I did for my license plate lights and interior LEDS, grabbed the model number off the instructions page on corksports website and then source them out

Honestly either get superwhite or yellow halogen bulbs (if you want good light output and a nice color) or LEDs if you just want color. HIDs in the fog housings can cast a lot of glare, and you have to deal with mounting the ballasts etc in an area that collects more salt than up in the engine bay.

If you already have HID's for low beams, why not just get bulbs that match the same colour output for fogs? If there is such a thing. Saves the effort with ballasts and matches so it's not 50 shades of white all over.
I have no issues with HID fogs

I have these CS fogs now. They work well enough.
I would like to grab LED DRLS next (or just white bulbs)

Dude there should be a no-thanks button. That's two different housings, neither of which was designed for a halogen bulb like the fogs we're discussing. C'mon.

Lol for the past few months that's what I've done too :( one of my HID fogs went kaput (seems to be the ballast) and haven't had the time/resources to fix it yet. So driving around at night with no fogs, like a peasant!
But yea HIDs do tend to give some issues in the long run, even if installation is done correctly. But the brightness, and light output if you choose the right ones, are usually a little superior to halogens.
hahahaha "like a peasant"

Fog lights are pretty much pointless other than for aesthetics. I have HIDs in both my headlights and fog lights in my Gen1 because I wanted matching lights. The HID fogs have been going strong with no issues for 4+ years now, no blown bulbs/ballasts. For my Gen3 I went with LEDs for my fogs because the housing was a pain in the a$$ for aftermarket HIDs and I was able to very closely match the colour of my HIDs. Having done both, LEDs are certainly a lot simpler and better imo.
I guess what I'm saying is... if you don't care about light output (wouldn't matter anyways unless you get projector fogs) or colour, go with LEDs for fogs.

I believe from 07 and up Mazdaspeed and normal 3s have the drl and the high beams as one, and the projectors as the full time lights. That being said my projectors are the only hids I have.
But it looks like I'll go with led fogs but with the dollar and border fees right now corkport is a little stretch for another 2 weeks for me. But I really want white DRLs so bad. Anybody have links?

If bright leds are what you're looking for, go with something like this.

I'm using them now, they are brighter than halogen bulbs. These are the brightest replacement leds on the market, extremely visible in the daylight. Not like most other led bulbs, and match closely to the color of 6000k hid headlights.

Thanks so much man. I'm gonna buy them Friday. Are you using them for drl and high beam or fogs? I'm guessing they could do both, yes?

Keep in mind im gen2, but yes you can use them for both drl and fogs, but i'm not. I have my drl bulbs disconnected and have done the fog light mod where I can have my fogs on without the headlights on.

I have a gen 2 and I have been running HIDs in my fogs for a couple of years. I have experience two dead ballasts over this time. Currently one side is out and I hate it. Can I run Nokya Hyper yellow bulbs in the fogs?

I almost thought I typed this out
Good to know about the hyper yellow bulbs, they're definitely not as bright and won't project on the road like the HIDs. But would definitely be very yellow when you look directly at them
