Creating this thread to give my review of the Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga and hopefully others will chime in and share their experiences, tips, pics and videos. Yes there is a thread from 2012 but it didn't get any traction so here's starting fresh.

First of all, the track itself:

http://ecuflashking.com/r1/TMP_track_layout_old.png

Very flat, very twisty with 2 pretty decent straightaways to open up the throttle. At no point was I ever concerned that I would hit a wall because the track really is quite open. You could hit the wall at the last corner before the straight alongside the pits but you'd have to be doing something pretty stupid for that to happen.

Turns 3, 6 and 10 are very tight and I found myself trying to drive them too aggressively which resulted in me going through those turns a lot slower than if I had approached them smoothly and applied the power where appropriate. The 2 chicanes at 4/5 and 7/8 are quite fun and can be take at some speed especially 7/8 but you'd better be prepared to brake quickly to scrub speed for turn 9.

Things I've noticed about my car and my driving style on that day:

1. Started the day's session likely dragging the brakes into the turns and through the turns. This resulted in my brakes smoking. Made an adjust to brake harder and shorter and did not have that issue again. While on the topic of braking, although I was braking harder and shorter, I was braking hard at the point of entering the turns. Great for getting traction to the front to get into the turn, but made the back super light which did result in me spinning the car once and then a lovely slide while Kiyomi was on my tail. Smart braking is something I personally will have to work on if I attack Cayuga again.

2. Aggressive and hard on the throttle in the turns doesn't mean faster. A learnt from ILR Track School, faster will actually feel slow because it is smoother. With a pretty front heavy, high powerered front wheel drive car, it did not seem to like the twisties all that much, however, if I just took it a bit slower on the turns, took the time to brake earlier and set up to get on the throttle through the turns, I probably would have been a lot quicker in general. Next time.

3. The straights. No issues. She pulls. Couldn't catch the red Corvette at the end of the day though, but by then it was so hot and humid she wasn't make nearly as much power.

Things that make would make the most difference IMO:

1. Racing harness. Racing seat would be nice but not as beneficial as the harness itself. With all the twisties on this course, you spend so much of your energy trying to keep yourself in your seat that you're spending less energy and focus on what is most important - steering your car through the turns. A properly set up harness would hold you in place and give your left foot a break from stomping on the death pedal as well as allow a light grip on the steering wheel to properly turn into and out of those 12 challenging corners.

2. Tires. My 235/40/R18 Hankook RS-3s have pretty good grip but they seemed to be no match for Kiyomi's 255 Toyo R888s. He was able to turn aggressively into the corners and, watching from behind, the car appeared to handle the speed through the corners comfortably. My car on the other hand was trying to torque steer through the corners, this however could be attributed to the wrong driving style of forcing the speed as opposed to allowing it to come naturally and smoothly. Next time. A dedicated set of track tires would go along way. Unfortunately the Gen1 speed3's are pretty limited in how wide you can go unless you raise the car up - see Thrizzl3 's soon to be ex-speed3

3. Driver mod. Although listed at #3, this truly has the greatest effect on how quickly you can navigate the course. No matter how good a driver you think you are, there is always a few simple adjustments that can be made that will shave a tonne of time off each corner resulting in quicker times, less wear on your brakes and tires and an overall better driving experience while on the track. Learn from those with that experience, ask lots of questions, go for ride-alongs, let someone else drive your car.

Must haves for a day at Cayuga:

1. Portable canopy. It is hot. There is no shelter.
2. Lawn chairs
3. Cooler with food and lots of fluids

I found turns 6 and 9 the most challenging as far as the racing line goes, but that's also because I'm running stock with all-seasons and wanted to get home with the same set \o/

Really like that setup ^ My post mount wasn't correct so i tried sticking it to the rear window.

Here's a small clip. reason it was so chopped was so i can send to a friend and i took the audio out because i was having a video chat with my wife. She was "riding" along for that run.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Ng5nAxPLA

i'll get some other clips up when i get home

I had a lot of trouble with 10. I think i was braking too much. But thats because it was so easy for tires to make noise. Maybe i could have gone faster and ignored the squeal since they weren't' the greatest of shape (Ventus HR2's with 60,000km on them)

the first several runs i kept buggering up turn 3 because i'd keep forgetting it was so soon after 2. Once i eased up 2, 3 became nicer.
I wouldn't mind a few more sit ins with someone to tinker with my form and let me know what needs work.

Definitely looking forward to doing more of these, and already shopping for new tires, these are done.

Here's my take on this track:

First off, like Loki said, if you plan to visit the track on a sunny day, make sure you come prepared as there's no shelter available (other than the bleachers). Bring lots of fluids for yourself and your car (if needed), food and anything else you need to survive the day. Making sure the car is in great condition should be a given; it's always good to do another check on tires, wheels, fluids, etc.

The track itself is pretty straightforward even for first time visitors. Just before turn 4, there's a pathway to the right that may confuse some if you're not familiar with the track so make sure you keep an eye out for that. I find that my car understeered quite a bit, mainly due to "awesome" tires that came with the car when I first bought it. Having decent tires with decent grip would definitely make it a lot more enjoyable.

On turn 1, I feel that I was taking it too cautiously because I didn't want get on the grass. But on the next track day, I'll definitely try to push it a bit further. The next few turns are pretty tight but can be easily taken with the right speed. Turns 7/8/9 are by far my favourites in this track. I managed to jump the curb on turn 9 due to understeer and got on the grass for a bit. Another indication that better tires are much needed.

I've only been on 2 tracks so far (Cayuga and Mosport DDT), but I feel I like Cayuga better than Mosport. Primarily, because of the longer straights and the chicanes. :thumbsup

Also, shout out to both Kiyomi and loki for riding along in my car and giving some tips. :thumbsup

I'll post another video later today, the one with Loki in the car. You won't hear the chatter as I mounted the camera on the outside. :chuckle

a few tricks to learn on this track is, turn 1, get as far left as you can. at turn 2, you can ride that lip a little and treat 2/3 as one corner, but you need to watch out for the pothole if your too greedy with that line, but allows you to avoid 2 nasty hidden bumps. 7/8/9 you just stay to the right go over the hump at 8 and treat 8-9 as your brake zone and you dont need to stay wide for 9 cause 10 is the slowest speed corner. get to 11, you ride that full power or shift if you can, treat 12/13 as one corner, 12 is the brake corner, 13 is the gas. i saw alot of people going wide for 12, it actually loses you a good 2 seconds doing that.

I much prefer DDT. The changes in elevation make it fun and apart from the straights it is an overal quicker track that you can really attack aggressively.

It got so hot in Sunday my car started off making decent power but by mid-day I could only keep up with that red Gti on the straights instead of blowing past them

i like ddt because it makes you a better driver faster and its fun, but i find cayuga is ontarios benchmark for how fast one actually is.
shannonville also has a decent back straightaway and is a fun track.

2nd session of the day got the pads to smoke pretty good and experienced brake fade

Adjusted my driving style and didn't have any other issues with brake fade the rest of the day. Using Castrol React SRF Racing brake fluid.

Considering picking up Hawk HP+ pads though

sp3GT

^Brake fade was due to the fluid more than the pads right?

I switched from Stoptech to Hawk HP+, I feel like I lost a lot of braking power.

My take on Cayuga is that it's more beginner friendly and probably better for someone that just wants to have some fun but not hardcore into tracking.
You'll get to reach higher speeds while still feeling "safe". It also feel less enclosed compared to DDT.

DDT on the other hand will give you more thrills and scares but will make you better faster. On DDT I'm only using 2nd and 3rd.

lazor86 who was the guy in the silver rsx?

Car had a lot of power. High compression motor with a turbo? He almost went off the track on turn 2 after the straight when I was tearing up the straight behind him

Sorry for late reply! A friend of mine, first time out on the track. Crappy brakes and tires on top of that. I think he's pushing 300whp with an ebay turbo.

oh man,

i would have loved to take my 3 there back in the day.

it would be cool to see some of you guys, new and old, at cayuga one day. its my favourite track! heres my current track/dd vehicle, i usually go on sundays with the touge guys due to work schedule. i know its quite a bit cheaper to go during weekdays

btw sasha is quite well known as a vq tuner, he owns and runs onpoint dyno for your mobile dyno-tuning needs!

drive safe guys

This past weekend at CSCS. There's more time left that's for sure.

I managed to go faster than 3 Speed3's that were there. If you guys are on here, feel free to ask for any tips! Honestly, everyone learns every single time they go out there, do not be afraid to ask! Come up to me at the track when I'm in the pits, I don't bite.

For reference...back in 2009 when the MS3's were running, including myself, the competitive times we were running were between 1.21 to 1.25 per lap...

Anyway...here's Fubawu...in a 215hp Civic doing 1.20...a time we should all aspire to...

who ran better than a 1:22.6 in a speed aside from john? best ive seen is usually around 1:23.5, even way back when. records are in ota, sigma and cscs still.

zoran was just being friendly, and spoke truth. no need to make it whos faster than who, thats not what this thread is about, about helping those who want to improve their driving. ;)

CSCS 2009...Sean beat me w/ a 1.21...to my then high 1.23...

Is this about beating a speed or generally improving yourself and driving better?

I know Zoran and I know he's being helpful...in the same light, I shared a video of a lap that will actually benefit ppl.

Your link is for 2010...which begs the question: I know what Zoran is doing...being helpful...You? I never quite understand...

what begs the question is why you bring up a speed reference from 2009? i dont understand you.

im tired of the speed owner bs that comes from some of the guys.

no, the reason is, zoran was able to drive alot better than a few speed owners. thats great and good on him. huge respect. and so what, mazdas are mazdas and i wish and still hope that a speed will take the track record in ota and cscs. but ur first reply in this thread is to say indirectly that he didnt do well because the competitive speed times were lower in previous years, who gives a fak. im happy you posted up that vid, its a great addition to making others faster, but it doesnt mean the bs you laid in there before can fly. thats what gets me, and its coming from a professional tuner/driver like yourself. cmon

but no, you couldnt just say good job, btw heres a vid to help you go faster.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my post, all I was trying to say we all learn every single time we hit the track and don't be afraid to ask questions and see how u can go faster how we can all go faster. So with that being said Mr speed, any tips for us to go faster or you're going to continue to ruin and perfectly good and helpful thread?

Zoran...I posted the times so the current MS3's running have a reference as to what a competitive time for a MS3 should be...and I posted a video to show a time we should all aspire to. That was my tip...along with my earlier comments about seat time, seat time, seat time, which you and Justin have lots of.

Never did I mention MS3 vs anything...and only in post #45 of this thread did Justin get his feathers in a bunch and turning this into something else, as is evident his general attitude towards speed owners.

Guys let's not ruin a potentially good thread because of what we think others might be thinking in the way they post, especially if we evrer hope to get a solid Tm3/mazda turnout at these track days

And since it was brought up, I will share my 5 cents on the speed3 vs. n/a Mazda3 at the track

Understanding obviously that in the end, it really depends on the driver, since any fool can end up driving a quick car very slowly. Similarly, a skilled driver can drive a "slow" car very quickly.

That said, I don't see the issue with a n/a mazda3 owner saying they kept up with or even destroyed speed3's, when similarly speed3 owners get excited if they destroy a corvette, or porsche etc at the track.

Why not get a bit excited about it? The car in question has more power than you, which means either the driver was complete shit, or you were able to use your own skill to shine through.

Now let's keep it all friendly!

LOL. im gonna leave it from here.

If u knew my attitutde, u would know i dont care whether you own a speed or a mazda or a muscle car or a car that barely runs. if u wanna learn and be helpful, i will help you to the best of my ability, no questions asked,I even let others drive my car if they want to. ask any of the Mazda owners from the last track day. so stop making these bs comments about me. u know what you meant and its not only me who thinks it evidently, or the way you put it misguided us. im all for what you just said aside from the last part. that is all.

This is me...trying to lighten the mood...

I remember, one of the first times I was at CSCS, I told one of the Speed guys...

"Don't let me pass...let me stay behind you and I'll film you..."

To which, it was interpreted as, "You're slower than me!"...and elicited a laugh in my face like an "As if!"....

Never once did I imply who was faster...I was just happy out there running with my guys, making film for the grand-kids to see.

Back to loki's point and to continue the tone of the thread, lets ensure that future discussions remains interpreted as mutually beneficial advise. If we are beating ourselves over our own little thing, that's like boys who go to an [hetero] orgy to compare dick size...and that's not why we go to the track together. =)

Oh man, honestly there is so many little things to it that it would be a very long reply lol, but power wise it just has I/H/E and the same tune Kiyomi runs. Which he will be playing with soon to get a little more power out of it. It has all the basics that all guy going to the track should have: upgraded suspension, brakes, tires.

To add to my video post, these are the tips that I got from a couple of guys:

Turn one, go slower, turn later.

Turn ten, keep it tighter, go slower and keep to the right rather than hammering on the gas and end up left, because it's a long way back to the right.

Turn eleven, try to go flat out doesn't matter if I end up on the right rather than left, it all depends how your car likes taking the next turn after it.

I was also told to use more of the curbs and NOT to hit the turn one curb!

I'm gonna try these tips and see if I can lower the lap times and I will post another video when I do!
