Hey guys,

Going to pick up my 2015 3 GS hatch in black from JefftheBiz in few days. Would like to thank Jeff for hassle free purchase and a great deal and this forum in general for directing my mind towards Mazda. Since this is my first purchase of a brand new car, I would like to ask more experienced members of what it takes to "baby" a Mazda? I am slightly worried about rust plague, so what would be the first thing to do to take care of it? Dealers rust proofing is declined, of course. Do I take it to Krown or Corrosion Free right after I have it? And if so, would it void Mazda's rust warranty? I've read a lot on this forum that drilling holes in the body to perform a rust proof would not void the warranty, even though dealers try to scare you into buying their service. What else do I need to do to keep it nice and pretty for at least five years down the road?

What do you have against dealer rust proofing? Can't be the price...

Side note, let the record state I have never said performing rust proof elsewhere will void Mazdas warranty.

Researched this forum and noted that almost everywhere, where the question comes to whether or not to purchase dealer rust proofing, the answer is a sounding "no". I am not an expert myself, so have to trust people on the internet.

Fair enough. However most of them are referring to the dealers that over price their product and require costly annual checkups to uphold your warranty.

Don't paint everyone with the same brush. :)

Also purchased my car back with Jeff last October so you're in good hands! However I did go with the rustproof package Jeff offered as it was almost a no-brainer... 10 year warranty, don't have to get it sprayed every year, and if there are any issues I can just go back to MoT (who's awesome service department will take great care of me!). Not only a cost savings but piece of mind savings having the rustproofing done at the dealership.

Alright, I'll bite.

You're right, most of the owners are mentioning two different issues with dealers rust proofing:

1. The price is too high
2. The job is half-assed

I've heard Krown charges around 100 $ to rust proof the cars of members of this forum, and it should be reapplied once a year. Therefore, for five years, that amounts to 500 $. I have also heard that their service is of a high quality. So what would be the price to rust proof at my favorite dealership, then? If Krown's rust proofing doesn't void the warranty, the logical conclusion would be to rust proof there once a year, as I doubt that MoT can beat 500 $ tag.

Or can it?

I have 2015 GT M3 sedan and had it with corrosion module for $500 from dealership added on the car loan with their lifetime warranty. But every 2 years check up. Even with this, I am planning to have it rust proofed every 2 years with rust cure formula 2000. Of course to add up to that, I need to check from time time any signs of corrosion, paint chips, and wash any salt sticked on the sides during the winter time. These care would be good enough for ensuring your car be far away from rust.
One thing I noticed with the 2015 Mazda is that the underbody is covered by plastic enclosure almost 80%, perhaps for aeordynamics. So when you go to the crown or rust check, make sure that they would remove the cover underbody otherwise, the treatment might not be as efficient as it designed to be. Also, there is a special tool to remove clips on the underbody cover. Not sure if they are doing rust proofing as often as they would with mazda3.

He/She probably means "Rust Cure Formula 3000" which is Corrosion Free. It's available at Canadian Tire and Parts Source or rather it was when I last purchased last year.

You would be surprised at Jeff's very fair price. I agree with parro, it was a no-brainer unless you have other plans.

The price is not really a main issue at this point. The main issue is keeping the car rust free. What I've heard with dealer rustproofing, is that the person purchasing it, still ends up krowning it every year. Here is the thread from this very forum where everyone is against dealers rust proofing pkg and not because of the price:

http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?79615-Gen3-Rust-already

So, I guess, my question would be, if I buy rust proofing from the dealer, and never take it to krown(or a similar place), will my car show any rust after five years given I'll take care appropriate care of it (undercoat, wash etc)? If the answer is yes, then sure, it's a no-brainer.

The answer is simple; Buy the car and have it Krowned ASAP, like the first day and every year after. That along with proper care will give you a rust free car for years...guaranteed, and no large expenditure up front.

The thread you mentioned has an issue in it that Mazda is reviewing/addressing.

Should mention that Krown or otherwise does not spray that area anyhow.

I am sure _3 Ron will confirm.

I second this, I did business with Jeff earlier this year and I got the package. The reason for it was, there was no requirement for me to re-do it and if there are any issues I am welcome to take it back to MoT for them to take a look and fix any issues. And it's a 10 year warranty. No arm twisting or anything like that, the price was right and no crazy requirements, just straight up "here is what we offer, let me know if you want it" type of deal.

They will actually spray the area if you ask, but that said, that particular issue is definitely a Mazda manufacturers defect, which I doubt any company outside of Mazda which does Rustproofing would cover in their warranties. I think any Mazda owner who spots this rust or any rust, should take it in to Mazda asap and keep records with photos...I'm curious to see if the Mazda factory warranty will cover this issue after 5 years. I'm also curious as to how the weld points look on the rest of the unibody.

Got the car. Its great. Love the interior so much. One thing that I noticed so far which was foreign to me - I actually feel when the gear changes from first to second (automatic transmission). There is a short moment when you can feel the response from the car when the second gear kicks in. My old car didn't produce that. Is it normal? Just curious as the driving dynamics are a bit different.

Old car (base lancer) would slowly pick up the speed when you press the gas pedal and you would not notice how the gears change.

I suggest you get a corksport or JBR motor mount 80 Duro, engine won't move as much. Your car will vibrate more if you dont mind racecar like feeling
