Just recommending to everyone to get the Shell Easy Pay ID tag. Just bring the tag close the reader at the gas pump, select your grade, fill up, then it asks if you want a car wash, press no, then take your receipt. The bill goes on your credit card at no extra cost. Great if there is a line up on cheap gas day, so if everyone had an Easy Pay, would mean shorter lines, as you are out much faster. If you have Airmiles, any promotions are added automatically, good for me, as I always forget those coupons that are sent to me.

Here is the link, it’s best to download the form and either mail or fax it in, as I tried over the net, and they just mailed me the form, and still had to fax or mail it.

get the esso speedpass

www.speedpass.ca

use it in conjunction with an RBC visa card and u get crazy points.. u can config it so that you don\'t get a receipt or so it doesn\'t promt u for a car wash..

it\'s fast and convenient and i just orederd my second jersey from their rewards program (first was the home Maple leaf CCM replica, now team canada away jersey)

oh if u don\'t like teh esso points.. swap them for air miles or HBC points.. cheers

I prefer Shell over Esso and I do have the Shell easyPay tag. Esso has had the negative \"reviews\" of being less clean than Shell gasoline. A few weeks prior to my accident with the original 3, I started going to Sunoco more. Just an AirMiles person... don\'t want to get into the hassle of handling three or four different points programs. I like the Shell tag, just sometimes I go to Hwy7/Woodbine Shell and they don\'t have the newer pumps to accept the tag. :(

Esso\'s gas is dirtier? Oh well.

yeah.. apperntly it is.. i wish sunoco jumped on the bandwagon of the tags.. it\'s so convenient.. but i guess they don\'t have a point system to tie it with.. time to make one :D

oh well i got my 2 hockey jerseys.. heh

PS. I just meant to give an alternative for ppl like me who do not have a shell gas station on their way.. didn\'t mean to be the gas nazi.. bluntman already takes the \"X\" nazi spot :p

I usually go to Petro Canada because it is on my route to work, and now with that Citi card you get an additional 2 cents off each litre. It will add up.

But a pass would be nice especially when I\'m late for work.

I use the esso speedpass too.. or at least I did till the accident.

Funny thing, its been almost 6 months now, and obviously no car = no gas. I got a thing in the mail from esso just last week saying that next time I use the speed pass they\'ll give me 500 free points or something-- good for a car wash or other stuff. Makes me think I\'ll use it again for a while then lay off it and have them give me more free stuff for _not_using_ it :D

I swipe my PetroCan credit card at the pump, paying inside is so 1990s! :D

I\'ve had a Shell easy pay tag since they were introduced (before most of you guys could drive :p ). I\'ve racked up crazy airmiles over the years. A lot of the time they have double mile promotions when you pay with the tag and with gas being so expensive they add up. You can also trade in your airmiles for merchandise as well so it\'s not only for trips. I\'ve been an airmiles card holder since 1996 and I have around 4700 miles. Now, to figure out where I want to go! ;)

Sometimes I use Sunoco, mainly because you get discounts off your CAA fee.

Esso and Petro Can can lick me.

Shell easyPay is awesome. I\'ve had it for over 3 years now. Double Air Miles and charged to an Air Miles Amex card is a lot of Air Miles. :)

And now they have one or two pumps that are easyPay and credit card only, and they\'re always free so I never wait in line even when there are lineups, when everyone else is paying with cash. :)

AFAIK the Mazda3\'s warranty provides roadside assistance for the first 3 years. If you got the extended comprehensive warranty, I think you get it too... so why keep CAA?

When the price of gas is cheap and there are long line ups it makes my blood boil when people go inside to pay cash.. Especially when they\'re a*holes and leave their car by the pump. Ugh! :sarc

Hmm, double Airmiles and EasyPay only pumps...interesting. I may have to sign up for one of those.

I heard a clerk tell one guy not to move his car after pumping gas and before going inside to pay... not sure if having the next person pump gas from the same pump before the first guy pays, will mess up the charge? or not allow the next guy to pump gas until first one is paid/cleared from the pump?

The CAA card is good for whichever vehicle I drive (or I\'m sitting in). For my Mazda it\'s redundant but for my g/f\'s 99 Protege, or other family vehicles that don\'t have roadside assistance it\'s necessary. Especially our \'93 Suburban which has 275000 km\'s on it. :)

Easy pay is all that and a bag of chips. Airmiles is just icing on the cake.

Have had the Shell EasyPay since before they were introduced! Shell was doing a trial in our area.

And to all the Esso users out there just remember that you are slowly killing your 3! Switch to Shell or go to hell!

Why do people say Esso gas is all that bad?

A few years ago there was a problem with the gas that Esso distributed and certain (I believe GM) cars. Namely, a chemical that Esso had in their gasoline would \"muck up\" fuel pump/gauge in these cars. Sometimes the float in the fuel tank would stick and thus read as being full on the dashboard and then leave the driver stranded. Only after pulling the pump from the tank did people find out what the problem was. I believe Esso has settled with the affected customers and paid for the fuel pump replacement. Once bitten twice shy. I also heard that their gasoline has a slightly higher than normal sulfer content...higher than the other brands.

Interesting.. I think I remember hearing something similar about Shell\'s gas last summer. I seem to recall something about it damaging fuel injectors on some cars? *shrug*

I personally hate Petro Canada gas. It has a somewhat higher moisture content. One really REALLY cold winter night I went to start the car and it wouldn\'t start.. the starter would crank, but it would never actually \'catch\'. Finally called up CAA, they came and he just kept cranking and cranking and it eventually started. He asked the kind of gas I\'d put in, I told him regular PetroCanada, and he said that it was most likely condensation inside the engine. Since then I haven\'t touched their gas and never since had a problem (even on similarly cold nights).

Rumor has it that Sunoco has the best gas.. I just wish they had an easypay type system and points :)

I\'m with you, I like the fact that Sunoco added Ethanol into their gasoline (gives it a cleaner, fuller \"burn\").

I find my car runs better on Shell gas... especially with the winter coming up the easy pay will be a lot better. I mainly use Shell or Sunoco and sometimes PetroCan.

Esso and Pioneer I avoid like the plague

If anybody is interested I have access to Esso Fleet Cards. These work great and save you 3.2% on all gas purchases made at Esso. I have one and like my speedpass to it and then I save on time and money.

Shell, Petro Canada and Esso all have dirty gas, with Petro Canada being the worst. Every year there\'s a report released giving details about the best and worst gas for your car and the cleanest gas available is from Ultramar and Sunoco with Petro Canada and Shell having the worst, with Esso coming in a close third for the worst. I wish I had a copy of the report, but I threw it out.

here it is.. (http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envision/air/sig/2004.htm)

EDIT: looks like ESSO (imperial oil??) aren\'t doing so bad.. and actually leading the pack
EDIT2: this report is about sulphur content

The report I saw went into a lot more detail then that. Shell has also been accussed and sued numerous times for \"watering\" down their gas. My dad use to only use Shell gas but a few years back the gas lines etc (not sure about everything that was effected because I didn\'t really care back then :p ) in his BMW froze (this is in Vancouver) and after a little investigation by the dealership it was discovered that the reason for it was the \"watered\" down gas from Shell. When my dad contacted Shell they said he was SOL and that they wouldn\'t pay for the repairs, so my dad sued them and won :D Now no one in my family ever goes to Shell :p

Airman Jack

from the looks of that report, the worst offenders are (over 100ppm)
consumers co-op (saskatchewan) with 106/108ppm (Q1/Q2)
petro canada (edmonton) with 150/160ppm
petro canada (oakville) with 133/141ppm
robins feed & fuel (thorold, ON) with 113/118ppm
and ultramar (St-Romuald) with 102 and a whopping 203ppm in Q2

and the \"best\" gas (by my own WAG...wild ass guess :p ) call it anything under 40ppm:
imperial oil (dartmouth) 31/29ppm
imperial oil (nanticoke) 18/20ppm
imperial oil (sarnia) 13.7/25ppm
imperial oil (strathcona) 40/31ppm
petro canada (montreal) 37/31ppm
shell canada (scottford) 9/9ppm

Suncor Energy Products, Inc. which I *think* makes Sunoco gas fared a middle of the pack 37/97ppm.

SO what does this all mean? Aparently Esso has cleaned up its gas and we may be crucifying it for a problem it has solved a long time ago. Petro Canada however seems to have some of the worst gas out there, but all manufacturers have refinerys that have \"good\" and \"bad\" gas (by my own estimates). This report measures ONLY THE SULPHUR content in the gasoline, there is a lot of other stuff that works its way in there and affects the life of the engine, as well as how \'clean\' it burns and subsequently the environment.

I know my opinion of Esso gas has at least been tempered by this bit of information... :)

It also depends on the day and who filled up the tanker. The same lines are used to fill up tankers with everything from flithy home-heating oil to the high grade car gas. What they do is work up through the grades so low-grade car gas may have a tiny bit of house-heater oil in the huge tanker, and medium grade gas has a wee bit of low-grade, and high-grade has a dash of medium grade. But when you look at it the other way, high-grade gas is twice removed from the home-oil and thus a bit cleaner :)

Apart from its first fill up at Sunoco, my car has been drinking Shell exclusively (I love my EasyPay tag!). I\'d switch to Sunoco if they had more locations near me.

Ok, so is there a concensus on this? Which is better, Esso or Shell? Also, is there hard data to back this up or are people going on heresay and rumors? I\'ve been using Esso with no problems but will switch immediately to Shell if I get solid information to go by...
