I've briefly searched the interwebs for any info regarding the mighty Speed and anyone using a VGT...nothing to be found yet by me.

Someone out there has to have looked at using a VGT at some point - I'm curious to know - has anyone on these forums investigated or know of anyone who has looked at using a VGT with the Mazdaspeed platform?

Check MSF, that's really the only place I can think of where someone has either tried or at least considered it.

VGTs haven't really been implemented on gasoline engines because the exhaust temperatures are too hot and can easily damage the turbocharger and the VG mechanism(s). This is why they're often found on diesels (with much lower exhaust temps). That's not to say the materials aren't out there to make VGTs for gasoline vehicles but it's prohibitively expensive in most cases and the technology is only now starting to find its way on to production gasoline-engined vehicles (can't recall off-hand if there are any on production vehicles atm, but they are being talked about more).

The only mainstream vehicle that has had it implemented (at least as of late 2014/early 2015) that I can think of was the Porsche 911 Turbo starting back in '07 but if I remember correctly, they got rid of the VGT for a more conventional turbo pretty quickly because it didn't end up having the durability needed for a (high performance) production car.

Porsche has always been at the forefront of gasoline production car VGT technology so it doesn't surprise me that they've re-implemented one on a production car. I'm curious to see how the VGT on the 2017 Mazda CX9 (if it makes it onto the production model) holds up.

Why not just do twin scroll. New Lexus nx200t delivers max torque at 1650RPM. There is no lag almost. But maybe they aren't as efficient at high rpms?

Good points taz, I recall seeing a vgt on display at the Toronto auto show some years back, iirc it was in conjunction with some vw or Porsche info, likely 2007 which jives with your info.

Good idea r4, I did skim info on the tst, I like that, would totally consider it; simplicity does underscore the goal of reliability though.

In my research I did discover CorkSport has engineered a replacement turbo they advertise is designed to truly drop-in place of the stock K04(?)...that is an attractive idea too...

I'm not looking to build a dyno racer or drag machine, this is my daily driver, I spend a fair amount of time on the road to/from work (140km round trip).
