Hey guys,

Long story short, I got a speeding ticket in New York state as I was driving back to Toronto on Monday, I don't have any hard evidence to prove I wasn't but basically the Cop said I was running 81mph in a 55mph zone. I definitely wasn't running at 55mph but I also doubt I was running 81mph but whatever. I have never got a ticket in the US before and I have no idea the process and I asked about the price, I did some research and it seems like a big deal. Can I get some advice on how I can deal with this with minimal damage to me?

A friend suggested I do the Traffic Diversion Program, which if it works out, is only $200 but I am not sure if its a gurantee either, anyone done this before?

Thanks for the help in advance, and comments and suggestion would be appreciated,

Thanks guy,
Tony

i got a ticket in New York near Syracuse about 4 years ago for the same situation, said i was in the 80's but i definitely wasn't, not with that kind of traffic. the ticket doesn't say how much it's for, and you don't find out until you plead guilty to pay it... super sketchy. Anyways, i couldn't take the time off to drive 6 hours there, hotel etc just to fight it so i pleaded guilty. Ticket amount got mailed to me a couple weeks later and it was $250. still cheaper than expenses to go fight it, so i paid it.

After paying it, about a month later they billed me another $300-something for the "driver responsibility assessment". i refused to pay because this is extortion. There was no mention of that fee beforehand, and if i paid it as well, whose to say they don't come asking for another fee. But yeah, i ignored it and every year i get a letter saying i won't be able to renew my license, etc etc. I've renewed twice since then. I'm not saying to just don't pay it, i'm just saying what happened with me. I rarely go to New York anymore and the times i did were in rental cars, so its not like my plate would have been flagged and i'd be pulled over for anything outstanding.

EDIT
seems another guy went through a similar thing as me with the driver assessment fee and also chose not to pay it

No experience here with that matter but this may be worth reading (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/commuting/why-should-i-pay-a-us-speeding-ticket/article536203/).
The article is from 2012 which involves Washington State & a BC driver.

Then again according to this paralegal firm (http://www.ontariospeeding.com/New-York-State-Speeding-Tickets.html), there is an agreement between NY State & Ontario to share speeding ticket information for their licensed drivers.
