Guys & Gals,

Been really getting into everyday carry (EDC) gear recently (amazon.ca is mostly to blame for this) and I wanted to create a thread where we can all show off our gear and possibly talk a bit about it all.

I'll start it off with an EDC knife that I recently purchased and have since kept on me as in my line of work these can come in quite handy.

It's the Kershaw Cryo II in Blackwash finish. Primarily picked this up because it had decent reviews and I liked the look and the idea that it'll wear over time for a more rugged personalized appearance. The knife itself is quite heavy for an EDC but I like that in this case because it feels more heavy duty and solid. It is very sharp and has no issues cutting through anything I need it to.

***disclaimer: I will be posting up quite a few knives I own and I do not carry a knife with the intention of self-defense in anyway whatsoever. Tool purposes only***

I'll get in on this...

My Benchmade knives, top to bottom is a 581 Barrage, 470-1 Emissary, and 556 Griptilian.

http://someforum.net/2014/Benchmade.jpg

I also have a couple little Spyderco's (the Bug and HoneyBee) and my girlfriend has a Lady Bug Tattoo.

Flashlights, top to bottom Streamlight Protac 88033, Streamlight Stylus Pro, Fenix E25, and Fenix PD35. I also have a Streamlight Microstream.

Similar to SomeGuy, I also carry a Fenix PD35 tactical flashlight, but the newer version which boasts 1000 lumens vs 900 from the older model. Not worth upgrading if you have the previous model.

Another little flashlight I've had for quite some time now is by X-Glow

More than reasonable 80 lumen output all from a single AA battery. Tactical on/off switch is nice as the entire flashlight fits in the palm of your hand. Took it to a cottage and lost it for 2 years but wife just recently found it for me.

I'm a bit of a flashlight whore so although you really wouldn't consider these next 2 flashlights as EDC they are functional for my work and I wanted to post them up

First up was a flashlight I always wanted since the time I was a poor student. Picked one up once I got a real job and that was the Inova T4 rechargeable tactical flashlight. I think this thing maxes out around 225 lumens which is decently bright but has a good throw which is why I like it at work.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160825/e796b692457e6a23b4334d2ccc341fa8.jpg

Next up is a "thrower" flashlight which is the Olight M2X-UT Javelot which can project 1020 lumens almost 1km. It is still quite small and easy to handle but you can't just put it in your pocket

The Ontario RAT II was a very recent purchase and is great because of it's small size. You don't feel it in your pocket but yet is more than capable when needed. You can't pick them up here as cheap as in the States, but it's like that with most things

What's a good flash light to keep in my truck all year?

Last one I had - batteries would die every winter

I think anything that is constantly left in the cold will have trouble retaining the charge to be honest. The Inova T4 flashlight I have holds a decent charge and because the flashlight itself is rechargeable, it can also be charged from the car if needed

One that runs off a AA battery is good as well since those can be found at any store or gas station

Get a small key chain one?

I use a Thrunite Ti3. It uses a AAA battery and has a ridiculous amount of light, for it's size.

I use this thing called an iPhone by Apple as a flashlight. It has a built in flashlight and built in phone too. Another plus is you can access the internet for basic survival skills like building a fire or finding sources of water (i.e. Tim Hortons). But seriously, the cell phone is a pretty good EDC instead of a small flashlight on a keychain flashlight.

Except your battery won't even last 24 hours...I can run my PD35 for days on low output.

Can you guys suggest something similar to the Fenix PD 35's features, but that is absolutely waterproof. Looking to stay under $100 shipped if I can help it. Something that floats is a bonus but not a must.

There are a couple of cool ones:

Pelican stealthlite: submersible to 500 ft. AA batteries, does not float
https://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Flashlights-Stealthlite-Recoil-Flashlight/dp/B007TTOH4A

EternaLite ergomarine: floats, great for boats, waterproof, not shaped like the pd35

No pic

But mine are

-iPhone
-wallet
-keys
-watch

Simple.

But truck has
-generic multi-tool
-knife 4" blade
-small battery-less flashlight
-matches
-blanket
-golf balls
-sock

4" blade because was told anything larger is considered a weapon.

The flashlight has a pull chord - but not very bright and cord is starting to look sketch

Golf balls in a sock make an excellent teeth-knocker-outer, without looking too suspicious

I have 2 sets of EDC, 1 for city, and one for up north

City:

-folding rayban wayfarers which I take everywhere.
-keys with USBs which are very handy.
-phone, wallet ect.

Up north:

4" whittling knife which my grandfather made during the great depression with leather sheath. Will update with pictures later because it lives up there.

Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) M16-13M in green with black finished blade

This model has the auto-lock mechanism. This particular knife will flip open quite easily with your index finger after some adjustments but you cannot close this knife one handed. I pretty much like this knife because I like the look.

Got a frantic call from the wifey this evening

The overhead DVD player decided to drop out of the roof liner in the GMC - and was literally dangling by the wires.

Met her halfway - and fixed it all with the EDC multi-tool that I keep in the truck :)

My arms are and finger tips are now rubber

Now I want to keep proper tools in the pick up - any suggestions on an emergency set that won't break the bank. (Simply because it's hopefully seldomly used.

This is going to sound funny coming from me, but get this set (wait for it to be on sale):

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-multi-purpose-tool-set-67-pc-0589259p.html#srp

I have one in my Mazda and it's the perfect self contained kit...pliers, screw drivers, metric and sae sockets, hammer...you can do pretty much any odd job with it but it remains just one small case.

Stuff that I carry with me.

I have my wallet, phone, keys and a Swiss Army Knife (Rucksack).

Good enough for any cutting needs that I have (Opening parts, cutting hose, wires) and small enough with my wallet that I hardly notice it's there anymore. Good proof of that is I accidentally tried to take it with me to Miami once, that didn't work out so well.

Picked up a little peanut lighter because you never know when you may need a flame. Something generally water right, very small and easy to keep on a lanyard or just your belt clip

Think it shipped from China so it took a while to get here but was under 5 bucks lol. Need to find my lighter fluid to fill it and try it out.

For those of you looking for a well designed, good quality, yet inexpensive knife, you can check out Byrd.

Byrd is an offshoot of Spyderco, and all the knives are designed by Spyderco, but made in China. That said, some Spyderco knives are also made in China.

I think of it as Gibson vs. Epiphone guitars.

Anyway I picked up a Byrd Cara Cara 2 because it got solid reviews, was under 30 bucks and I wouldn't feel bad abusing it. Currently using this a lot around the house while I do reno work. Very sharp point which is working well for detailing the painters tape I have been putting down.

It came extremely sharp, and I have been using it to work on my knife sharpening technique using the CRKT Veff sharpening kit

Thanks for these reviews. Clearly you're passionate over this stuff and it's good to see that there's some reason behind your madness. I normally just bought stuff that was inexpensive and looked cool as tits. LOL

Throwing knives, ninja stars, Rambo knives... LOL

BTW - I saw a similar lighter on-line. Make sure it's retains the fluid "zippo" style. Otherwise, you may want to pack it with something to absorb the lighter fluid.

Not sure - but just a side note - last I checked, their website is based on USD and do not reflect the Canadian location prices. However, the e-flyer is location-based but only shows "sale" items.

They do have plenty of multi-tools that can be found useful. Check the camping section

but like Default User mentioned, this is definitely the USD price, and not only that, but based on being sold in the US so you can't just assume a simple currency conversion.

I have one more in my arsenal.

http://dontevenreply.com/images/m3.JPG

This cleverly disguised weapon may look like a tissue box, but is actually a Benelli M3 12 gauge shotgun disguised as a tissue box. The ultra-soft quilted tissues serve as a comfortable grip on the pump-action shotgun. Also, if you find yourself sneezing during the heat of combat, you will have a handy tissue box ready for action.

The watch I wear for work pretty much every day is the Casio Pro Trek. It is very lightweight, set to 24hr clock which I need for work and is +/- 1 second at all times to CN time. It also lights up automatically in the dark when you tilt your hand to read the time which is handy. It is also solar powered.

Dug up this Cross pen just this morning and will see how long I carry this for. Love the size and look of this pen but not a big fan of ballpoint for my writing style.

Real butterfly knife? Illegal much?

A lot

Funny thing is I've had it for years.

Even asked an off duty officer explain why it's illegal.

apparently - any folding knife that is capable of being opened up with one hand is considered illegal. Even a buck knife that has the pivot knuckle.

That being said - off the record - it would only be confiscated if there is reason to believe it's being used for malicious intent.

I keep it on me every now and then for fishing or working on shit that an exacto couldn't handle. Today - it was more for show and tell. My boss is a knife junky also.

That's very similar to a couple of mine. The Axis Assist mechanism in them is basically a switch blade without the switch, it skirts the law because you push the blade and not a button to activate it. Thing is though, butterfly is explicitly illegal, these might as well be illegal but aren't.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Do yourself a favour and get one! I've had a handful of various EDC knives over the years and the Mini Griptilian has been the only one to last more than a month or two without me getting bored of it - in my pocket for over a year of daily use now. The mini is IMO the perfect size for pocket carrying and accomplishing most tasks without getting weird looks from people who don't EDC. It has silky smooth action, is easy to open and close, and the plain edge is perfect daily use (don't cut much rope so I don't need the serations much).

The only thing I'd replace it with right now is another Griptlilian... Maybe a Ritter Grip (had I known I'd love my grip so much I'd have got this in the first place) or a custom one.

Because I'm a gear whore, let me continue

Picked up a Thrunite Ti3 for something small that can be put on a set of keys or easily hidden in your pocket.

With a max output of 120 lumens from a AAA these are pretty good. The Ti3 has 4 modes. Firefly, low, high and strobe. It also comes with a pocket clip vs the T01 (which I also bought) which has no clip and single high output.

I had the Fenix e25 for a while before I gave it to my dad...was a decent light but I didn't like the switching mechanism on it. Really though, you can't go wrong with Fenix lights, they're good bang for the buck. The way lights are going these days, whatever you buy now is obsolete in a couple years as a new version with longer runtime and more lumens will get released inevitably.

That's the thing, the two halves of the knife are mirror images of eachother. All they'd need to do is design the blade anchor to accept the blade both ways. I spoke with Olfa directly and they don't even make a left-handed blade anchor. I'm stuck holding my knife backwards like a god damn idiot.

Only got it yesterday and haven't really tested it too much. Runs on a single AAA. Ordered rechargeable triple A's and a charger last night.

100 lumen max output is pretty good. Medium is actually quite bright and would have thought it would have been dimmer (would have liked it dimmer). Firefly mode is very dim and great for checking on the little ones in the middle of the night.

Size reference sort of, I have average sized hands.

Once the clips are reversible they can all clip to a baseball cap.

The newest Streamlight Microstream just released has an 's-clip' style pocket clip which allows it to be mounted in either direction without the need to remove and rotate the pocket clip. It was a great idea.

The new version is even pricey in the States. The older model sells for US $16 now

The coating on the Streamlight seems to wear easily, all the pics of them show them worn out, I like that look but still.

The pf01 has a glossy finish which makes it appear more plastic in pictures but I can assure you it's not

Quit buying cheap knives...I can cut down piles of cardboard boxes with any of my benchmades and they'll stay sharp through it. Quick 2 minute touch up on the sharpmaker once I'm done and they're good to go for next time.

The trick with the sharpener is to keep your hand very steady and at the right angle every time.

The light throwing distance in higher brightness settings is great.
The battery life so far on the setting 1 above candle light mode is great. I have yet to charge the battery.
Good sturdy build with nice weight in the hand. Belt clip secures well.
Great torch, good price, fast shipping and would recommend this to anyone.

Nice...I have one of the older versions, decent light but I don't like the tailcap switch, it's hard to press.

Seriously order a Fenix UC02...it's brighter and smaller than the microstream.

I can say now that the build on the Thorfire is better than the Microstream, and the thorfire was more than half the price

I do still like the Microstream tho, and now I'm done buying flashlights

Re-read your post now SomeGuy

Exactly right, the tail cap switch is very hard to press to get the light to stay on

achieved the same results just now by folding a small piece of paper and placing it in the tailcap switch. Turns on like butter now.

Keep searching for that ideal wallet...was using the Nite Ize Financial Tool for a while but it moved around too much in my pocket. The Maxpedition Micro Wallet showed up today so will give that a try...

Knife whore continues with the CRKT Minimalist. This thing is a hell of a lot smaller than it looks...but it's pretty cool and it's quite fun to wear around your neck

Do I need a new knife? I have a Leatherman Charge Titanium multi-tool, a Spyderco Dragonfly, and a Swiss Army knife "camper"...

Any recommendations for something to add?

loki

No one really neeeeeds anything, I certainly didn't

Question is, do you want it and will you go starving after?

What kind of knife you interested in and what's the budget?

If you're going to beat up on it and really get some hard use out of it I'd go with something by Kershaw because they're relatively inexpensive for what you get

Or the Ontario Rat II if you want something small, discrete, well made and inexpensive. Rat I if you're looking for the same but much bigger

Could also go with a Spyderco Delica 4 if you want something similar to what you have already but a little bit bigger

Knife recommendations pleeeez!!
I am looking for a knife that could cut up cardboard whilst I am doing the recycling garbage. I need it to stay sharp. This is important. I also need it to take off those pesky price tags from clothing/hats etc. It's important that it's small enough to get in those tight spaces between the tag and the actual clothes so that it doesn't accidentally cut the fabric. Thoughts?

Spyderco Delica 4

I'm leaning towards the delica 4... It's the same as the Dragonfly, just bigger. The vg20 is awesome steel, and the bright orange handle is good for when I drop it at work :p

Benchmade Griptilian...it's the answer to everything.

loki

Having a mini grip, I'd say it's my least impressive Benchmade knife I own. They're entry level and hence everyone has one if they have a Benchmade, but it's definitely not representative of their really good knives. The Barrage is a nice starting point.

AHEM......

I ordered a Kershaw Cryo 2 Blackwash to replace some old crush knife which hasn't been that good. Really liking it so far and it's HEAVY which is nice.

Also got this 90 lumen AAA mini flashlight off Amazon which is pretty bright.

That Olight is $13.95 on Amazon. Not bad.

The Thrunite T01 is $12.95 for 125 lumens. Both are great options for someone looking for a small light with very high output off a single AAA

Check out the Fenix UC02, 130 lumens and even smaller since it runs off 10180 lithium cell. Best part is built in charging via micro-usb so no futzing around with batteries, just plug it in with the same cord as a cell phone occasionally to charge it up.
