View Full Version : Time to replace the MS3

Seriously time to just get rid of my speed 3 and move on.
The question is what to get....front runners are in the poll. I'd honestly rather spend less money than the Macan but it's like all the good things about the speed 3 in AWD/SUV/PDK goodness. Taco is an interesting off shoot but I'm not sure how I feel about dailying a truck. Lexus is just the boring but responsible/reliable choice.
Criteria:
- Reliable
- Daily driveable year round including winter but will be low mileage (my commute is 7km one way)
- Good performance (I can't handle driving anything that is over 8 seconds to 60, less than 7 seconds is ideal)
- Not overly big
- Automatic/Dual Clutch, not another manual
- More comfortable and grown up than my MS3
- New, not used

I voted for Tacoma TRD OR V6A just because I have one in the works.. With all the outdoor activities I've got going, it was time for me to move on from the speed and get truck that's not too big and can carry all my shit.

Yeah, and it's the cheapest of the ones I've looked at too.
For more info, I've driven almost all the premium SUV's at this point:
- Porsche Macan
- Lexus NX
- Jaguar F-Pace
- Volvo XC60
- Range Rover Evoque
- BMW X3
- Merc GLA
- Merc GLC
- Audi Q5
The thing about most of those (really everything but the Lexus) is I worry about the reliability off warranty.

How about 2017 VW SportsWagen (http://vwmodels.ca/sportwagen/index.php#trims) or 2017 Ford F150 Raptor (http://www.ford.ca/trucks/f150raptor/?fmccmp=lp-future-top-hp-f150-raptor/) if you're willing to wait.
Then there's the Volvo V60 Polestar (http://www.volvocars.com/en-ca/cars/new-models/v60-polestar), if you can get your hands on one.

Got my 2012 Tacoma TRD and Love it
All those premium SUV's sound great - but wouldn't trust reliability after 4-5 years. And maintenance / repair parts are pricey.
If I could - TRD Pro with factory super charger

My MZ3 I kept for 3 years, only got rid of it because I really wanted a speed 3. My MS3 is 6 years now. My used Rav4 is going on 3 years of ownership now but no plans to get rid of it until it dies.
I'm leaning towards long term, assume at least 5+ years, ideally 10 years.

New Colorado ZR2?
Anytime I see these:
- BMW X3
- Merc GLA
- Merc GLC
- Audi Q5
They should all have bumper stickers that say 'Driver makes poor decisions - stay back 150 m' maybe its a Toronto thing....
Otherwise I have zero experience with any of those vehicles, so I have no real say on them.

Not a big domestic fan...I'd take a Taco over the GM twins even if the GM ones have a bit more bang for the buck.
And I agree with your assessment of the BMW/Merc/Audi crowd and the reliability of those brands is shit...you basically don't own them without a warranty. Porsche build quality is supposed to be a step above those, but even still it probably won't measure up to Lexus/Toyota.

There's no new factory supercharger for the 3.5 as far as I know. TRD Pro vs TRD Off Road, the pro does have some nice shocks and a bunch of styling things, but it's not worth the nearly 15k premium. You could take a TRD Off Road, throw less than 5k in mods at it, and it would be as good or better than the TRD Pro. At least with the Raptor you're getting a lot more truck for the money, not so with the TRD Pro.

I guess TRD stopped the SC with the 2nd gen models.
And the differences between the TRD Models make it hard to pick. But 15G extra for a pro?! I didn't know that. I just like the grill on the pro over the standard Taco LOL

You can drop a pro grill into any of the other taco's...it's expensive (like $500ish) but I agree, the grill on the pro is sexy.

Have you considered the Jaguar F-Pace? They are a ton of fun to drive with a RWD bias. I just ordered a Land Rover Discovery Sport...not for everyone but something to consider in your mix.

Yes, the F-Pace would be runner up the to Macan. An F-Pace is about 70-72k out the door when decently equipped, by that point I might as well buy the Macan (75-80k if I don't go overboard on options) which is definitely the better driving vehicle by a fair margin. The other thing I question is the F-Pace's reliability, given Jaguar's reputation over the years (although it has gotten better) compared to the Porsche which from what I understand is pretty good.
After driving the Evoque, I didn't even bother with the Discovery Sport (I had gone in to drive both)...I was not impressed at all with Land Rover, the Evoque was uncomfortable, unrefined, drove like shit and reliability will be even worse.

I hear ya man. Buying this time around for my wife and I has been stressful as there is just nothing out there I love right now in our price point. In the end we decided to just get something affordable and useful. We decided on a 3.5 year lease just in case reliability becomes an issue. We loved the F-pace but eventually stayed away because we would have been ordering a first/second model year and we got burned with our first MY CLA45 with so many issues.
I really think you should stick with the Macan and keep us updated. If I can convince the wife to spend a little more money next time, we may get ourselves into a macan as well. In the meantime I now have a 5 month wait for the Discovery sport to arrive.
Either way, good luck man!

What about the odd-ball Ridgeline? Only mentioning because you're considering the Taco but most of your options are car based.
I lust for one, but can't swallow a truck or truck like object on my current commute when I'm in the car on my own 90% of the time.

I'd rather the Pilot over the Ridgeline.

SomeGuy

Ridgeline is uglyyyy. Domestic (escalade) is out, no thanks. Tundra is too big, hence the Tacoma.
The reason I was shopping luxury vehicles is because they have engines with more than 200hp...everything else for the most part (CX-5, CRV, Rav4, etc) are all terribly underpowered these days. If I could get a CX-5 with the engine of the new CX-9 I'd have bought one months ago.

I like the Tacoma myself. I have riden in Default User's and a friend's 2014 Tacoma and was impressed with ride, comfort, and visibility.
I think given its lower price against the other oprions and (probably) better reliability, you would be able to have more funds to mod/ spec out something quite nice.

So don't spend 80k on a vehicle, and I doubt you're buying that one cash.

You could go for the base option but that wouldn't have all the bells and whistles. My colleague just got the Macan GTS and they dropped $85k or $95k cash on it.
But really without daycare fees, after school lessons etc. it would be within budget. Lol.
Don't think you have kids so get what you want so you don't have buyer's remorse. Even the base one is nice at about $60k all in.

The GTS would be just awesome. At least I'd have to go with an S so it would have the 3.0l v6, the base model 4 cylinder just won't make it worth while. The S as minimally equipped as possible (things like the smart key and bi-xenons would be necessary) would still be 75ish all in.

Given that response, and that you have a 7km commute out of your options I'd go with the Taco.
It'll have a ton of utility, be completely different than what you were driving, hold value well (especially if you're a low km driver), should be more reliable, will have more of an aftermarket if you sway that way all while being significantly less $ than the Porsche.
Only go for the Porsche if you know that you won't have buyers remorse over the price tag.
That's just my worthless thoughts though. Life is short, drive what you want...

Thanks...that's a good justification.
Funny, I'd probably have more buyers remorse over spending 45k on something I don't love as much versus 80k on something I absolutely adore. If my past history of purchases has taught me anything, I never miss the money but always regret cheaping out on something. Although in this case, a 45k taco isn't per say cheaping out...cheaping out would be buying a new MZ3 in place of my speed.

Sizing of the vehicle.
Q80=Suburban
Q60=fancier Pathfinder
Q50 & Q70 have the same engine but the Q70 is much heavier and looks better IMO
Q30 is the smallest = Cx3~ish but slightly larger

So true, they're not usually cross shopped at all but both would work. I want something that delivers power to all 4 wheels and has ground clearance because winter driving sucks in a car (even though I've never had issues getting around in my MS3). SUV's and Trucks both suffice for that and are better for trips on the highway and better on shitty roads and are more comfortable and all sorts of things. Sadly neither are performance vehicles...the Tacoma has a bit more power but the Lexus does drive better.
I also drove a highlander today, was a nice ride and quiet but way too big boaty, it's out.

Would question, get the Macan (but then I'm biased!) ;)
Seriously, coming from a MS3, if you don't have a fun toy as a 3rd car or a fun daily driver, you will go nuts!! You will sell said un-fun truck in maybe a year, lose money, and buy a sports car / sporty SUV.
Would I own the Macan out of warranty? no way - but that's what trade-ins are for.

Here's how I look at it:
You (and don't take this the wrong way) don't seem like you would need a truck. You have a brand new house and it's unlikely that you'll need to do any renovations for at least 10 years. So, unless you have a trailer that needs towing, or a dirt bike or a toy to put in the bed, you'll probably be fine with an SUV. If you're considering a trailer, whether it's for a boat, a camper, or to haul other toys around, then go for a truck without a doubt.

I've been highly considering the BMW M240i and meets all your requirements.
The ratings are really high on it and personally think it looks really nice (I prefer the blue) and is definitely more grown up.
I've not yet had a chance to dive one but all my father in law buys is BMWs (last 30 years) and I've never seen him have an issue and quality is quite nice.
(Sorry sent this before seeing that you kind of looking at an SUV style car. I prefer the look and size of the X5 over the X3 but that might be too much size for what you wanted.)
(Double edit: I should have read the whole thread :) Nice looking car!)
