anyone knows of the cheapest place that will do it?

yestrday i noticed my mom\'s accord had a flat so i took it in.. called 3 crappy tires in teh area and they varied from 28(tax in) to 32(tax in) wtf? anwyay.. took it to the cheapest (and closest one)

ironically today, as i got out of my car i noticed a screw in my tire. then i looked back at some pix and that screw has been there at least since saturday morning.. yesterday i even had to deflate the tires (from 35psi) so it doesn\'t seem to be leaking air yet. i need to take it in and thankfully i\'m getting winters on 2mr but still..

so cheapest place anyone? and is there a difference b/w the repair techniques? i thought it would be just a plug with silica/glue keeping it in..

Since you just got the car (therefore wheels brand new), if you care about the look/type of wheel weights, the best suggestion would be to take it back to your dealer. Patching a tire the right way requires removing the tire from the rim and patching from the inside. Thus, the wheel needs to be re-balanced afterward and other tire shops won\'t have the same sticky-type wheel weights as the factory ones (so 3 wheels have one type of stickies and the patched one would have different stickies - it\'s not a big deal but I tend to care about minor things like this).

On the other hand, if you were planning on getting other rubber on your rims then this doesn\'t apply.

I guess that means it\'s time to get rid of the Badyears! Was the nail in your stock tires or winters?

no.. thankfully it was the RS-A that got punctured.. getting winters on the car on tuesday..

actually i just called Avante and Joe said it was not covered under road hazard warranty b/c the OEMs don\'t come with it. if u were to buy a new one THEN u\'d get it.. stupid! anwyay.. if it\'s repairable then it will be $19.99 (Avante) - do we get a discount on this as well?.. damn getting ripped off at crappy tire.. oh well it was close.. next time..

so i\'ll be going to Avante on wed.. and thx wongpress for the heads up with balancing!!!

About balancing, *if* I remember correctly xenon had one of his wheels balanced and it looked like a real hack job was done with the weights(painting missing from where they were and stuff).. where\'d you get that done at?

BTW: Canadian tire scratched my rim a bit.

no worries.. it was the residual grlue wfrom the chicklet weights!

The residue is really annoying and impossible to get off! They had to move the weights when they mouted winter tires onto my stock rims and now I\'m left with some marks inside the rims. At least the brake dust covers it. :D

Exactly as majic says, the glue on xenon\'s car was removed with gue gone.

Actually, this brings up another bit of info on the sticky weights. The factory stickies are quite strong (hence the excessive amount of residue on xenon\'s car). However, most tire repair places use a little less strong stickies (because some manufacturers may paint that area whereas others don\'t, and the paint may be weaker, and so on).

In fact, my winter wheels use stickies, and one of the wheel weights fell off (I was aware of it and it was quite the fluke, and the shop fixed it for me for free, but you get the idea of how the repair shops use less strong stickies).

there\'s the \"cheap\" way, and the \"proper\" way.

\"cheap\" way - tire plug. you can buy these kits at CT and wal-mart for ~$10. also, a tire shop (i.e. steelcase) will charge you ~$10 to plug your tire. it isn\'t the \"recommended\" way to do it, but it works.

basically, they serrate the hole big enough to stick the plug in. then they cut the remainder and you\'re on your way. no rebalancing is needed.

is it \"safe\"? who knows but i will let you know that a friend of mine had a 300ZX TT back in the day and had 5 plugs on one tire and had no problems with it, even at over 200+km/h.

I also had a plug on one of my RE92s on the maxima and went to the track with it a few times....and a 1/4 mile run on a track heat cycles a tire pretty good. when all was said and done, the tire was still good...BUT i would never put that tire on the front.

EDIT: a blowout on the rear is easier to maintain control of the car. a blowout on the front and you\'ll have trouble steering. END EDIT

if you don\'t plan on keeping the RS-As, a tire plug will do.

the \"proper\" way is the way Preston described...remove the tire from the rim, patch the tire from the inside, mount and rebalance.

seeing as how Avante charges $20, then going with the patch is a good call.

yeah.. i see now.. i think that crappy tire does the patch.. b/c when i looked at a pic it has a plug and a sealant and they claim to vulcanize tha tire.. i would assume avante does no less! but it doesn\'t hurt to call and ask.. so for 20 bux i can prolong the life of crappy years which aren\'t THAT bad on dry :p

and yah.. shoudl said.. which place is the most proper for the least $$ ;) heh.. all about bang for the buck.. go AMD :D

EDIT: i didn\'t know they did plugging w/o removing the tire :sarc

Yep, I\'ve had plugs put in many tires over the years with excellent results. It\'s a cheap and fast way to get the tire back on the road. Most places will do it for $10. I\'ve never rebalanced a tire afterwards or felt the tire was out of balance at all but I may have been lucky.

Majestic\'s got it, basically they\'ll pull out the screw and if it\'s punctured the tire, they\'ll ream the hole and then insert a plug covered with a compound which\'ll melt the surrounding rubber and seal the puncture. They\'ll trim the excess plug and send you on your way.

The proper way is to pull the tire off the rim and patch the inside and rebalance the tire afterwards. It\'s usually about $20 do do it this way. If Avante is charging $20 for the patch I\'d say go with it. I think I got charged $30 to plug a screw hole at Morningside the one time I took a puncture there. Jagoffs.
