Does anybody know somebody who can put back a small piece of eavestrough for me back onto my roof? It runs from the downspout from the upper roof to the eavestrough on the side of my garage (see the attached pictures). I don't know if it's too dangerous to hire somebody to do this for me. If yes, then I can wait until the Spring. It's not such a big deal for now. I just wanted to get a quote at the very least. Thanks.

That's downspout...not eavestrough. Just go up, shove em together, put a few little screws in, call it a day.

Ya what he said. If you can change the time on your radio unit in a first gen Mz3 you can fix that down spout.

My ladder is probably 1 to 1 1/2 foot short of me standing up and walking right onto the roof. Also, I'm scared of heights!!
I was thinking if I could pop the screen from my bedroom window then I could just climb out onto the roof but I'm not sure how to remove the screen from my bedroom window.

Pull the little tabs or slide it over.

Pull the little tabs or slide it over.
It doesn't slide and I don't see any tabs. I haven't removed any screens from a window since I was a kid so I don't know how the new ones work.

You're not serious right?
Don't have a ladder? Go buy one.
Don't have a truck? HD rents one, $30 for 90 minutes.
Set up ladder, climb up with downspout and then install it.

Try throwing a brick at it.

Guys. I'm just asking for a reference for a contractor. No need to ridicule people when they don't want to do certain stuff or don't know how to do certain things. You don't know me personally so you don't know why I'd rather not go up there.

Whereabouts do you live? Maybe rather than asking for a contractor - maybe ask for help? I'm sure members here will be able to help you out at a fraction of what a contractor will charge you.

Or just ask one of your neighbours.

Seriously this is one of those things that you shouldn't own a house if you can't fix it.

If you aren't offering to fix it for him, move on to another thread.
I'm really tired of people bitching about how people shouldn't own houses if they can't fix shit.

Tried to explain what to do, if he wants more instructions I can offer that...it's really incredibly trivial to fix.

I agree with you 100% about the complexity of this repair.
Maybe he's not comfortable though with doing it himself. Also perhaps he doesn't want to buy another ladder.
I myself have had my hands full with my own house fixing and renovating.
I know people who don't do that kind of stuff and that's fine. I just hate it when people look down on others who may not be able to, or even want to do their own work. That's all really.
Everyone needs to learn a few things here and there without the insults from others.
Also it was a general suggestion to all who were commenting, not just you. :)

To the OP: if you're staying there long term, it would be a wise investment to get another longer ladder. How else will you be able to clean the eavestrough in the fall?
As for your fear of heights, I can relate to your situation as Mrs Wanker has the same issue. Try this, only look at items within your horizontal eyesight range and DO NOT look down. If possible have another person to hold the ladder while you're up there.
While you're up there, consider repainting the wood trim, especially the piece flush to the roof, before rot sets in. Come to think of it also fix the cracked weather caulking too.

I can only go up to where my eyes are at the same level as the eavestrough. So, I'm able to clean them fine. But since I got those guards installed with holes in them (not sure what they're called) I don't need to climb up there to clean them anymore.
Even if somebody were holding the ladder I wouldn't be able to climb up. It's that constant fear that you're going to fall. I think I should be able to climb out my window since I won't be on the edge of the roof but the outer screen won't budge. In an emergency I'd just punch that thing out since I wouldn't care what would happen to it but I'd rather not break it for something like this.
Do you mean replace that piece of wood? It already looks like it's falling apart. I was thinking about that already but I forgot about it when I had some contractors over replacing the shingles. Do you mean the caulking that's going vertically closest to the edge of the roof? I didn't notice that. Thanks.

Sorry, the leaf guards were not obvious in the pics

No apologies needed. You can't tell unless you climb up there and look down on them.

No worries. With height I don't know how it'll affect me until I'm up there. I've always tried so hard not to look down but I always fail.

Great. I'll look into it this spring. Another couple of things to add to my to-do list.

The trick from stepping off a ladder onto another surface is to gradually shift your weight. Put your leading foot on the roof, but keep all your weight on the ladder. Then gradually shift the weight to the foot on the roof and push off of that foot to get on the roof, don't push off from the ladder.
If possible, don't place the ladder parallel with the surface you are getting onto, so not against the eaves. Place it against the side of the house instead, where the brick is, perpendicular to the eaves. That just helps but isn't necessary.
More ladder safety: if you bought a fibreglass ladder, don't store it outside. The sun will deteriorate the fibreglass parts of the ladder, making it brittle. If you have an aluminum ladder, it's okay outside.
