2 years old, 40,000 km so far. Just found oil on the alternator but no smell. Looks like the dirt came from the seal of the engine above the alternator. Will take it to the shop but wondering any one has experienced this or any thought?

2.0 or 2.5? I haven't seen this at all before, the alternator isn't really in a spot that normally gets oil on it. Do you have a picture of the oil and where you think it's coming from?

I thought the alternator was covered in oil, but from those pics it doesn't look like it will impede its operation. Is the serpentine belt dry?
Other than that it looks like the oil is coming from behind the fuel rail, so most likely the intake manifold will have to come off. I would bring it to a Mazda dealer.

It could also be the result of a very sloppy oil fill last time around that's dripped its way down there.

I'd have to agree. The stains are not wet and actually look old and dirt covered and the fact its very localized.

I'd suggest cleaning the area and then keep an eye on it, but looks like a old spill to me.

Dealer has cleaned up the area and suggested it is from a slopy oil change. It look good so far. Thanks for all the reply. I will still keep an eye on it. Any thing to do with engine or tranny could just drive me nut, especially when it is New.

I would check the passenger side motor mount. 1st and 2nd gens are notorious for their faulty, oil filled mounts.
