View Full Version : N64 on LG 4K TV

So finally upgraded the basement tv to something that was made after the year 2000.
Knew that I might run into issues running some of my older game systems and I have. The TV has an HDMI and joint composite/component hookups.
I can get an older system like a PS2 to work, but the 64 not so much. It shows nothing and the tv doesn't even recognize it as an input (where other systems register immediately), so I bought an HDMI converter.

The converter has the 64 on the screen, but it shows up on the screen pretty badly, gets worse and worse until nothing and then repeats from poor to awful.
Any one hooked up an old system to a new tv?
Sounds like an issue with cylinder 3....
And cylinder 2....

It's primarily Number 3.

No RCA connectors on an N64?

Or S-video?

Default User, N64 has RCA out of the box, apparently Gamecube came or it was available through Nintendo, an S-video cable option. Nintendo used the same output cords for NES, N64 and Gamecube so I'm looking at trying to get a cheap one to at least see if it works. The upscaler I purchased has an S-Video input.

LG 55" 4K (55UH6150 series)
Through youtube and google there's a bit of difficulty sorting through those that want HD quality out of an N64 versus those that have new tv's. Some seem to run an up scaler similar to the one I have, some go on about Monster Purple S-Video cables for Nintendo systems that is no longer sold.
For instance, the guy below upscales his signal on a DVD burner with built in 'up scaler' and also through his home theater setup.....but that seems to be for picture quality more than anything else.

I know the 64 still works as it was played a week prior to the post being made.
Booter22, I believe Wii differs from the previous systems.

To my experience on the TV up-scale abilities, LG make the worst performance among other big TV manufactures...
Do you have friends have other brand HD TVs? So that you can bring your N64 to try? As you said you can show something on the TV, but the quality just strange... I think the cable or connection you use is ok, but it's because of the LG TV, the picture just became wired...
= = =
I don't know if LG improved in these years. But years ago before I bought my Sony new TV, I had the chance to watch the new LG big screen in my friend's house. The amazing picture stunned me when I watched the Bluray on that TV, then after the movie finished, we switched the channel to tree house... Oh, sh*t, what the hell is that?!?! It's much worse than the old bunky CRT TVs ... So "LG TV has ZERO upscale ability" marked in my mind since then, and I never consider buying a LG TV any more...

YepYep
I've got an older 1080P Sony (circa 2012/13) and it shows up the same way as on our LG's. Still haven't ordered the S-cable yet. Just hope that Nintendo pulls a 'Nintendo Classic' for the 64.

If so, this is not the "up-scale" problem... maybe the problem is still in the N64's video output then... good luck~ I have no experience on this~
But you are a real fan of the classic games... I got my PS3 long time ago, still remember after some days I had played the PS3, I connected back the PS2 to play some old game (GT2?! not sure...), but the picture quality just block my way to play that again.... ^_^

is that with the upconverter or with the N64 alone.
if you're having issues with both TV's and the upconverter, i would say the issue may be with the N64. i say if you can get another output cable then try that. or if you know someone with an N64, get them to come over and test it out.
Also, time to look into a raspberry pi with retropie on it. that will solve your issues for all classic games haha.

I was using the 64 a few days before on the old school tv and no issues, granted shit does happen with old stuff and maybe it did break in that time.
Tried it on the Sony TV with the upscaler.
I'll take a look at the 'Pi'.
