Hey all, hope bluntman reads this too...

I checked www.mto.gov.on.ca but no luck on this question. I know it is okay but just wanted the 100% confirmation;

Can we photocopy the vehicle and plate ownership paper (green) and leave the photocopies in the car while storing the real version at home?

I get this question a lot at the office. I tell people it\'s fine to do so just as long as it\'s a current photocopy of the front and back of your ownership. I have also been told first hand by some police officers that that is fine with them as well and that they will give you 24 hours to present the original after which they will drop the charge of \"Failure to produce permit\". Now, that still doesn\'t mean that you\'ll get of \"scott free\" with every single officer, just explain to them that you didn\'t want to leave any important documents (aside from your insurance) in the car and that if your ownership were stolen anyone can simply go into an Issuing Office and sell your car from underneath your nose. Of course, don\'t start getting testy with them, it\'s already bad enough that he\'s stopped you for something you\'ve done, don\'t dig yourself into a deeper hole.

I have business card folded within my ownership, so once the see the trillium and \"Ministry of Transportation\" I usually just get off with a warning. :D

That\'s exactly the reason I\'d think of not keeping the original within the car. Thanks, bluntman!

I keep photocopies of my registration, and my insurance in my car and the originals at home. Why would there be a problem with photocopies if they contain all the information.

IIRC Avante actually gave me a photocopy (and orginal) and said to sign both so that they are valid and keep one at home (pointing to original) and the other in the car (pointed to the photocopy)

I would think it is smart to cary the photocopy of the ownership in your car, and not the original. Simply because of someone steals the car, they can\'t sign over the ownership to themselves (ie. forge your signature)
