I suggested to a friend to get a Mazda 3 hatchback for his University age son. He is looking at 2010 or 2011 model with Automatic Tranny.

What is the advantages/disadvantages for the 2.0 litre vs the 2.5 litre models?

Aside from more power and more gas consumption? Is one version more desirable than the other?
I am thinking along the lines of service, timing belt/chain? , durability?

Any input is appreciated.

I am a college student and bought the 2012 2.0 skyActiv, 6 speed manual. I love it it’s a great car for teenagers! The skyActiv is better on gas and has just slightly less horse power than the 2012 2.5. I believe 2012 was the first year of the skyActiv. Won’t be of much help with timing chains but they are durable and service is fine. Can fit 4 guys, 4 hockey bags and 6 sticks in my hatchback so there’s enough space. Get a manual tranny, it’s cooler and can help save on gas. Enjoy
