anyone has change their modem last month? Last month I recieved a letter from Rogers saying that they are retiring the old cable modem (not Motorola, the one that sit horizontal), so I change to a new Motorola surfboard model #sb5100 which sit vertically.
when I using the old one, I use a cable spiltter to spilt the cable to connect to the modem and TV w/o any problem. but now, the new one does not recieve any signal when using spilter, so I either hook up the cable to modem or TV but can\'t do both. I asked many ppl including Rogers, no one can answer my Q, Rogers\' email even think the spiltter is computer SOFTWARE!!!! stupid. So anyone can solve my problem or any has the same problem? pls help.

When they said that your splitter was a software splitter, they probably that you have some sort of internet connection sharing software.
Try a better quality splitter. I bought a powered (5 outlet) signal booster from Radioshack that was also compatible with a cable modem, I think it was around $60.

I have the Motorola modem aswell for awhile now and have a Acoustic Research spliter running to my T.V. tuner and have no probs. Maybe you just need to get a better one?

The cheaper splitters don\'t allow through good quality signal in the frequency that the modems use. If you get a nice techie, they\'ll give you an \"approved\" or good quality one for free :)
This is what they gave me a few years ago:

on a splitter, it is best not to leave any unterminated ends.
home depot also has the \"professional grade\" splitters.

Anyone on Rogers High-Speed lately get a warning letter or something regarding surpassing the monthly 60GB Internet usage bandwidth cap?
I haven\'t but wondering if all that shizzle is for rizzle... I mean real.

you can use the modem\'s cable for TV by splitting it before going into the modem?

Well i recently bought a new tv in my room and I bought a splitter from radio shack it works great. No connection problem no cable fuzzy problem. I also use the vertical one cause I\'m using the rogers extreme and I have to pay for this stupid modem. :(

Sorry, bud. My childhood was wasted reading Archie comics while you eagerly waited for your delivery of Popular Science. Fugger! I beat up kids like you in school, but I guess you\'re getting the last laugh now.
:p
another tangential question: can you use TV cable to hook up to the cable modem? The Rogers tech said that regular coax cable was not up to spec for hi-speed, so instead of the usual thin black coax, they used a little thicker white coax cable.
\'cuz if i can use any of my tv outlet cables for the computer, i\'ll have a little more flexibility when it comes to relocating the wifi router.

at the risk of getting flamed by majic i\'ll take a stab at your question.
i\'m 99.8% sure that its the same wire.
actually, the scam used to be that you could order internet and get cable for free with the same feed.
of coarse now you ahve to subscribe to basic cable to get internet....f\'ing rogers!

yes, you can use any cable outlet and connect your modem to it.. you can even split it using a cable splitter (as already mentioned).. ur cable guy seems to be feeding u bs.. I hope he doesn\'t have his \"hands in your pocket\".. (I love that song from the commercial.. funny thing is I don\'t even know what the commercial is for.. I just listen to the song.. :p)

the tech is partly right...you want to use RG6 cable vs. RG59 for the cable modem.
the differences can be seen here (http://www.computercablestore.com/bulk-coaxial.aspx). RG6 is commonly used for satellite and digital cable installations and can be found at any FutureShop, BestBuy, CanTire, The Source (RadioShack), Home Depot, etc... you don\'t want to use RG59 (the \"cheaper, thin\" ones) which is what the tech was referring to.
as long as your splitter and cables are high quality, then you should be fine.

I didn\'t have to pay for anything as the initial installation cost was covered by Rogers. Having said that, I don\'t know whether the installer was a Rogers employee or an independent contractor. I guess if he was an independent contractor, I guess he\'d be able to charge Rogers for x feet of cabling?
