LOL! That was funny. I installed Linux this week, and am having a bit of a tough time grasping things. It is NOT an install and go platform like Windows, but it does have a lot going for it. :D

actually it is.. for an \'easy\' transition, try the ***** version \'lindows\' i think u have to pay for it tho..

mandrake MOVE is da shits (esp the version with USB key) you boot off a cd into a fully working linux environment and your /home is picked up from USB key as well as your personal settings. you don\'t even need a HD (just modo, cpu, ram, cdrom) but it\'s nice to have one.. lol.

Majic,

Yeah live CDs are everywhere. I am running Ubuntu. Its is a fairly new distrobution, and getting rave reviews. They have a live CD as well. Linux is not as plug and play as Windows... at all. Read up on the user forums. Many many known issues. Take for example, playing WMA files. A ton of tweaks and changes are needed to play them, not just a simple plug-in. But I still will play. My GFs Bro donated a 10GB HDD for my testing and playing. And I cant leave well enough alone :D

PS - If you wanna check out Ubuntu, go to www.ubuntulinux.org

oh i agree it\'s not AS plug and play as winbloze but for one i hate wmv files :p and mp3s/dvds/cds/mpegs are read no problem. i just wish newsleecher had a linux version :hoho and i could fully move over.

the main problem with the \'new\' distros i would say is the lack of drivers. ie. i have 2x74gb raptors in raid 0 and i could not install mandrake 10.0 on them :( so i had to split it into single drives and dual boot it that way. it\'s getting better and better but still lacking a bit. and for example ATI TV tuner, you just can\'t get drivers for it b/c ATI is keeping it a guarded secret and they only develop for windows. i\'d say redhat and mandrake are the most user friendly from the \'big\' distros and with most driver support.

the best is \'recovery console\'. at work some ntldr.sys or whetver other file (reg hive maybe) was broken/corrupt/missing.. nobody could get winblowz up and running so i popped in a cd with linux, booted, mounted the drives, recovered the needed files and off they went with regular business :D

it requires a bit of dirty work but you feel good at the end of the day knowing you\'ve done something good :D (not used windows) :P

I know this thread is old, but I searched and found this thread.

I'm looking to switch to Linux but have no idea which version to use.

I'm looking to run a webserver (probably Tomcat)/MySQL and netbeans(where I can do some development) on my laptop.

Centrino 1.5Ghz.
768MB of ram.

if the laptop specs are too crap.
I can also run it on my desktop.
AMD Athlon 64 3500. 1 Gig of ram.
But I don't want to touch the desktop since I brought it for my little bro.

Anyone have any suggestions on which version to use?
Owl? Redhat? Fedora?

Thanks,

b

I vote for suse or mandrake like majic said above. I actually prefer suse the most.

Hey,

you're talking about openSUSE right?
http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version#Downloads

I use x86 but it is not listed in the DL section. I should download i386 right?

Thanks
