This answer to this question may be all relative to how much kilometers, style of driving and what we haul 90% of the time with regards to struts or shocks being replaced and its wear and tear.

Is there a rule of thumb out there in automotive land with regards to kilometers and years.
An average OEM strut I heard should last at least 3-4yrs in duration. What does our manual say?

For guys that are lowered and to a certain degree on OEM shocks, expect a wee bit sooner wear and tear than if you weren\'t lowered. I have had my H&R\'s 1.3\" @24K and now I\'m at 64K and by intuitive gut feel I should change them to a higher performance shock at 75K-80K for maximum handling performance. But will I keep the car till then?

I have also heard that lowering modestly..(whatever that is...I\'m supposing anything not below 1.5\" should not be too harsh on the average car.

Any thoughts, opinions, factual knowledge, friend of a friend of a friend of a buddy stories etc???

Just got back from chapters and I was reading a Canadian APA book and shocks should be serviced approx. every 2-3yrs and struts 4-5yrs. I think we have struts. I can\'t remember the approx. kilometers.

You can\'t service sealed struts. My Civic had the stock shocks and struts with H & R race sprigs on them for 4 years and 60,000km. Never had to change them.

Had several vehicles that I never touched the shocks or struts but my CRXsi went 7years before changing all 4 struts, present ride is a \'91> 10years changed front struts, rear shocks still original.
I think alot has to do with your first comment, how you drive, load your vehicle etc;
I would think that lowering the vehicle would definitely shorten the life of the struts but I can\'t give any examples as I\'ve never done it as it could be alot of headaches if not done properly>alignment etc;

But I am considering lowering my 3 when I get it

Yup, my 93 civic had the stock shocks with H&R Sport springs (a more mild drop than that of the Race springs) and I never had any issues with them in the four years of owning that car.
