Noobie questions, but just wanted to know to satisfy my curiousity (too many performance related mods in line before audio).

For the sedan, where would you put a sub? If it goes in the trunk, how does the bass sound get to the listener? Or maybe it passes thru the seats - in which case, would the sound be distorted?

If the sub goes in the cabin, where da hell would you put it? I guess it goes in some special made box - looks pretty thick to me...

For the Miata, due to the lack of space, I\'ve heard people building boxes for the footwells, but I think that would be really inconvenient.

Just curious!

The sound from sub is omnidirectional, you will feel it not hear it.

^^^ what he said.. as long as it\'s there u\'ll hear it.. positioning will not have an ENORMOUS impact..

u can try to remove your jack and create a custom box in that hole (that\'s what i\'m hoping for this summer but from what i hear fiberglassing might be a helluva lotta work!) you can search up on it in this forum even.. john had it done IIRC

even if the sub is in the trunk? i\'m just going by analogy... music from a direct source is clear. music from the next door neighbour\'s townhouse is muffled. The lows maybe less so, but there\'s not a big impact? dang crazy science!

Whatcha think ballpark $$ just to put a sub in the trunk? So many competing interests for mod money, but if it don\'t cost too much, it gets bumped up on the list!

Bubba, if you had to choose, would you upgrade the speakers or add the sub.

Low frequencies do not need to be directed to the listener\'s ears, unlike the higher frequencies.

If you add a sub you\'re going to have to add an amp as well, so it\'s more involved and expensive. If you just want upgrade your sound for the short term, upgrading your speakers would do the trick. Just take into consideration your final audio goals. It doesn\'t make sense to rush out and buy some half assed speakers now to find out you have to replace them down the road because they won\'t handle the amp you may want. I\'d really suggest looking around, listening to a few systems on test boards, making yourself an audio budget and starting from there. Talk to an audio store that takes your goals into account, not some place that wants to make a sale.

i did both...i upgraded the speakers first...and wasn\'t satisfied...as door speakers do not do much for sound quality...and i was pretty pissed that my dads 6x9\'s in the trunk of his cavalier was kicking out more low frequencies....then i got a cheap setup sub and amp! just a beginner set!

if you wanna get a decent sub+subwoofer set,
it\'ll cost u AT LEAST 300
+ installation and wirings, you probably end up at around 500 minimum.

ditto, thats what i did...the basic sub amp install...
the sub was $80..amp on sale for $99, i spend a lil extra on the box...$129 (its normally $60) amp wire kit was like $70..LOC for the head unit...$20...and thats it..
