View Full Version : Subs with built-in amps

I\'m thinking to add a sub but given my restriction on keeping this mod as inexpensive as possible (i\'m not much of an audiophile) and to be able to open up the entire cargo area when I need to transport stuff, my only options, AFAIK, are the Infinity Basslink and the Bazooka BTA series subs with built-in amps.

I\'ve heard mixed opinions on both products. I\'d most likely go with a 100W set up. Would the actual speaker size matter (in the Bazooka regards, 8\" or 10\")?

Hey wtom I was also thinking of getting a self amplified sub. I need the trunkspace so a big box is out of the question, but I still want some BASS!! The low end needs alittle more in the Mz3. I\'m seriously considering the Infinity Basslink, it has gotten good reviews everywhere and seems to provide ample bass for various genres of music. I checked online and on ebay it runs for ~$250 cdn + shipping.
Trying to find somewhere that sells it here in Toronto and compare prices.

The quote I got for shipping was $75 so... Approx $275 us = $340 cdn + duties. I\'m gonna email these guys and see if they can claim a lower price so that the duties aren\'t as much.;)

not sure if this is a viable option for you but what about a custom fiberglass enclosure where the jack is (housing an 8\" or 10\") and an amp right under the first layer of the trunk? it should fit in there no probs and you sacrifice NO cargo area.

something like this (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/536466/3)

That\'s really cool and true it doesn\'t affect cargo space at all! My only concern is with sound quality, there is no resonance chamber so you won\'t get booming bass but I guess it all depends on the type of music you listen to. Also the position of the sub can greatly affect the sound produced (so I hear from other forums, no pun intended:D ) I would like to hear different setups just so I can be sure about what I want.

the placement of the sub should not have a GREAT effect on the listening experience as lower frequency soundwaves (bass) tend to be omnidirectional. although that is true in an open space environment, the waves would have the tendency to bounce off the rear hatch and back into the listener\'s ears. the only way you can tell is really tryu it out and place a speaker in various positions. if you do not rquire a gianormous thump, just spice up the bass a little, the jack-hole enclosure should do.

i found some VERY good reading on high/low frequencies and their directionality as well as difraction of sound waves.

check them out here (http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae557.cfm), here (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/sound/diffrac.html), and here (http://www.mastersonaudio.com/audio/20010201.htm)

Man that was a long read!!! as if I don\'t have enough stuff to read at schooll!! Now we\'ve gotta make a computer model of our car and simulate different variables ie. speaker size, position in trunk, stuff in trunk, and compute the optimal setup:p sorry that was the engineer in me coming out

I went to Lockdown and talked to Jeff and he said he might be able to get the infinity basslink. He also suggested other options such as a mono amp and sub that would run from $400 to $600 depending on the components. Still considering the options. Find anything wtom?

I stayed out of the above because you guys went on about items that were outside of the subject; Subs with built-in amps.

I haven\'t found much information. Only products up for sale; Clarion in our Buy/Sell section but I have read some relatively negative reviews on the product, Bazooka of 8\" and 10\" sizes with 50W up to 200W of power, and not much from BassLink yet.

Which begs the question, how many engineers does it take to bring a thread off-topic? :D

don\'t have an amplified sub to suggest but this could be something to consider.eD (http://www.edesignaudio.com/us.php) have subs and amp for a really good price, their subs don\'t need to be in a huge enclosure to work well.
if you are installing it yourself....you can get a 9kv2 (http://edesignaudio.com/product.php?cid=1&pid=1&cur=USD) and a 9.2 amp (http://edesignaudio.com/product.php?cid=5&pid=24&cur=USD) for just over $300 plus the wiring kit and loc.

^^^ Not to mention the fact that eD subs are great!

If you guys are just looking for a bit more bass, I\'d just recommend replacing your door speakers. I\'ve had my car for less then a week, but I know I\'m replacing mine. If you listen to talk radio or easy listening I\'m sure they would be fine.

I listen to really heavy tuned down stuff and the factories just can\'t handle the low end, if I turn it up to 50% or more, I can tell I\'m gonna blow them up.

If you add a sub, but don\'t upgrade or add crossovers to take the lows out of the doors, it will still sound like crap when you turn up the volume.

I know this doesn\'t relate to a powered sub either, but I thought I\'d give the suggestion.:)

What a great link!! Looking forward to doing more research (and possibly trying them out)

i don\'t know if this is something that u wanna think about
but Blaupunkt overdrive subs are really thin

they can mount in a really thin box
or even . . .
(not sure where, but with a mounting dept of 2inch, u could think of a few places!

here is a pic of a 10
http://www.blaupunktusa.com/NR/rdonlyres/5161C8DF-073F-4DC2-85F2-40B31B8BFE1B/0/odw1000_h.jpg

here is the website (http://www.blaupunktusa.com/BlaupunktUSA/)

that with the amp in the cargo area (where i have my amp) will probably lead to good trunk space!

even with the one 12 in my car and the amp under the cargo tray
i have pretty decent trunk space still!

How much everything add up to for ya, Broli? I got my BassLink 10\" 200W installed on Monday, 5th. I\'m more than happy with the output. Unfortunately, it really proves how sh!tty the factory speakers are but I\'m trying NOT to blau my money on them ... :p

i don\'t have that sub!

but
my sub and amp ran me like 300
box was 80
plus like 80 for the wiring kit!

the amp was from a friend so it was pretty cheap, but it actually does pretty good
power acoustik (520watts max power), don\'t know the model number, and an RF punch2 12 400 watt

the bass is pretty good, it is clean!
and loud enough for me!

but yeah, i want to change my speakers, i am still not sure what i wanna go with, but i
have been checkin places out here and there, i guess i will strike when there is a deal i can\'t
pass up!

I haven\'t heard of a 3 owner doing the sound deadening on their car yet.

S.F.W. has done deadening in his car, and I\'m quite sure a few others have as well.

Anyone have experience with the Kenwood ksc-sw1 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-cUsamDbGCYT/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=ksc%2Dsw1&i=113KSCSW1) powered subs? Apparently they are small enough to go under the car seats. Couldn\'t find any local dealers that carry, will probably have order one from the states

Anyone have any experience with the Infinity Basslink II w/4sc amp addon? I\'m also looking for any feedback on Crutchfield. This seems to be one of the best places to get it. If anyone knows of a local to TO place that has these please let me know. I\'d love to be able to check it out prior to buying it.

Cheers,
G
