View Full Version : What do you do if?
So a friend of mine asked me to teach him to drive stick on Saturday night, and he seemed quite dissapointed when i responded stating that it could very well end our friendship, so \"no\".
Do you think I overreacted? What would you do?

I wouldn\'t teach them in a brand new car, he has to understand that.

if he wanted to b taught with ur car
then no, u didn\'t overreact
if with a beater car
yes u did
He wanted to learn in my car, and he knows how much it means to me. The reason he wanted me to teach him is because he has an interview at a dealership tomorrow for a job that will require him to drive standard vehicles (Porches to be precise). It\'s not like he has never driven a standard before, however it has been a very long time.
I think i made the right choice.

you did.. but you SHOULD have recommended to take him to a dealer for a test drive.. then he could learn all he wanted :) that\'s how i did :D

Take it this way... wanting to learn or drive manual at which you have never touched a clutch before or it had been like a decade again... no way, not on a new car!
My gf had indirectly asked if I would teach her how to drive standard on my 3 when I first got it. I indirectly said no. :D
She understood though... just felt a bit disappointed that her own bf would not teach her but since it\'s a new clutch and all...

I don\'t think you over reacted at all.....why should your car take the beating, it\'s not fair.
+1 for learning at the dealer:D

No worry, you\'re not over-reacted ;)
I haven\'t drove a standard for a while when I picked up my new car. Thus I asked a standard tranny from my dealer for a 30 mins \"review\" drive. :D
I taught my friend how to drive stick on my car in an empty parking lot. Prior to that she had never driven stick before.
So long as you know what you\'re doing and you can trust your friend to do exactly as you say, it should be fine. She followed my instructions and didn\'t stall the car once or burn the clutch.

A friend who gets upset and doesn\'t want to understand your decision of NO!! is not a friend at all. They should be lucky you didn\'t tell them \"to go to hell and take the express train there.\" There are driving schools in the phone book which will give you a 3hr crash course in it. If this bastard prepared well in advance and knew future jobs would depend on this, they would have gone that route. I believe my buddy at Hertz nearing the Airport rents manual mini\'s.
However, while my clutch chatter on my P5 was acting up and I had scheduled a warranty replacement, I did teach this awesome looking chick at work and it didn\'t matter to screw up the mechanicals in-case of a mishap. In my mind she could have practised on my ****. She picked it up in 30min with the basic 1st-2nd smooth shifts, starting on hills, and the rest was basic.

Friends I can understand. G/F\'s I can\'t.
Three words from the G/F: \"You\'re cut off.\"

I beg to differ my friend. I think its the other way around. because your friends can\'t do the things your g/f can. :hoho
What if she says those \"three words\". Just my opinion on things. When you\'ve been with a girl for 8 years.. your outlook on things tend to change. ;)

Whoa!, that\'s like a lease you opted to buy out. I change girls on average, every 2 yrs.. but lately, most have been lasting from oil change to oil change. Damn, did I equate females to cars and duration to oil changes and leases.
Anyways, he should dig in the phone book for rental car agencies that offer manual trannys. Hard to find I bet. When loved ones, acquaintances and friends full don\'t understand the intricacies of a persons 2nd Largest investment in a lifetime; just behind a purchase of a house, they should realize that it is not a toy. Very few people master the art of smooth shifting and driving manual correctly anyway. It does hurt friendships when decisions like that are made.
Girl I\'m with wants to purchase a Honda Accord next year and the only true way to drive any HOnda is in manual. If she insists, I may just get rid of her at the next oil change I get done to my car. Right now the girl is at 16K and she is lucky.;) :p

I totally agree - that was my intended meaning.

Yeah, you could have just said no, instead of \'it\'ll end our friendship\'.
But yeah majic is right, should have took him to a dealership.
Thats where I learned.
If it was already closed, then I will HAVE to, I put my friends first.
But only let him practice in a big parking lot or empty area

My brother taught me on his BRAND NEW RSX :D But he\'s a bad teacher so when I got my 3 my bf came with me and I picked up it instantly.
Once u get the basic down (maybe you\'ll stall like 2 or 3 times whats the big deal?) you\'re good to go

my buddy asked me if i could teahc him how to drive stick on my 3, i told him, hell NO, beginner on a brand new car especially when its MINE!!! lol, so he went ask anotehr guy the otehr guy had a 1 year old golf gti, he let him he stalled and stalled, and grinded his gears like no other, also he was trying to reverse without the gear being put in and i think he took the rpm to like 8000 or more lol of course teh owner of the golf was punching his leg so he would let it go, so if anybody asks u to teahc thme just simply say no, if they wanna end friendship, thats just being stupid, the guy or girl has to understand that
