i was wondering if anybody knows who would win if racing against each other?
the mazda 3 or civic sir hatchback....
i know for sure that the new 2006 civic is going to beat our car which sucks :( but i\'m still happy that i just bought the mazda3
since the new civic will obviously be more expensive, waste more gas and more money on insurance

It would be pretty close, I\'ve driven the SIR and it takes off pretty quickly compared to our 3\'s.
I\'d give this race to the Civic.

In a flat our race from a stop the SiR would win.....sorry guys, but it is a quicker car. Having said that, that is only one aspect of a car, and in a lot of other aspects the 3 wins handdown. I personally can\'t stand the SiR cause it looks like a mini-Odessy:p

baaahahhahahaha
that makes mine a mini-sienna
yaaaayyyy to the micro mini van!
The SIR is a nice car but I can\'t stand the minivan styling and especially the centre-mounted shifter. The shifting position feels really unnatural to me.

Having driven a very reliable CRX-Si for the last 17 years (which I still have),
I honestly thought that my next car was going to be another Honda.
But when I started looking for a new car, I was very disappointed with Honda\'s line-up
The Civic-Si was the only car that interested me, but I wanted another hatchback.
The salesman started to tell me that they still had a SiR in their showroom, but I didn\'t even go over and look at.
Its UGLY !!!! (the salesman quietly agreed)
And Autoexec is correct... that centre-mounted shifter is stupid and unnatural.
I really hope Honda brings back the CRX one day.
Why they ever dropped that car in favor of the DelSol is beyond me.
Dont get me wrong.... I love my Mazda3.... but my CRX was/is a little pocket-rocket !

i love my mazda as much as the next guy, but driv the civic and the shifter grows on you, its actually a really good place to put one. it has a slight edge, and i mean slight. in performance. it a drivers race. i also dont like the front of it, but the back is awsome looking. the interior has excellent seats(not like our mazda. and of course more aftermarket support. i looked into one when shopping, but that front end and 25 000grand..for a civic...no thanks...the new one is faster but its going to sticker at 27500 or more...too much for any civic. if you ask me..

i\'m a bit confused by the question...what kind of race? drag race? rally? street course? track?
also...why not look at the performance characteristics of the two cars? slalom times, 0-60 times, braking distances, 80-100 times, etc etc.. I guess all that info may not be readily out but I haven\'t looked.. just an innocent question though..

stock. i would give the edge to the civic. i had a CAI, and twm ss at the time when i went with a civic up highway 20 in hamilton, i had him by a car and a door...so i dont know...maybe he couldnt drive...its a drivers race. if one revs at you do not be afraid of it..it might be a little quicker, but if you can drive well. you should be even..just my opinion...

I was going to point out that the Civic SIR HB is probably alot lighter but it\'s not.
Curb weight of Civic = 1249kg
Curb weight of Mz3SP (5sp) = 1282kg
With that in mind, the Mz3 generates 20lb-ft more torque than the Civic..

I Agree... the torque would get us off the line faster. and with the same HP rating, we should be able to keep the lead.

I\'m actually really surprised that the SIR is only ~35kg lighter than our 3...I always thought the 3 was a heavy car and that the SIR would be much lighter since it is specifically designed for performance. It also seems much much smaller than the 3.

theres the aspect of gear ratios.
I\'m pretty sure the SiR has higher ratios then the 3. (faster accel)

In all honesty, the current SiR isn\'t as well thought out as the previous one. (In relation to each other) the previous generation SiR\'s were much better built and planned than the new ones.

I dunno about that, not a honda fan so never really researched them. But the current SiR, sure is fugly.

interesting...
Stock dyno on SiR shows only 138hp / 120tq @ the wheel...
0-60 mph (0-96 kph) 8.1 s
1/4 mile 16.1 @ 86.8 mph
Mazda 3 I have seen 134hp / 125tq @ the wheel
0-60 MPH: 7.73 s
1/4 mile: 15.92 @ 87.41 *motortrend
We Win?

theoretically.. the 3 should win.. cuz its about the same wieght.. but has higher tq numbers..
but once u put into driver factor.. and who gets better traction and wat not.. its a whole different ball game... no 2 drivers are goin to launch the same.. and even using the same driver u wil never get 2 identical launches..
at the same arguement.. if u put the same amount of money into modifyin for performance on a 3 and the sir.. then the sir will win flat out.. cuz more aftermarket, cheaper overal retail cost for the parts.. hence why honda\'s sell well.. cuz of the tremendous aftermarket support and low price tags of parts..

torque is what wins you a race with cars. especially with similar weight attributes. not that I am biased or anything, but having owned an Si-R and now the M3 and having alot of friends that I have raced (Si/Si-R)..... the VTEC is what wins the race! Everything else is fair and even. Where Mazda tried to make up for the lack of VTEC in torque... the Si-R with a heads-up race with similar drivers.... we lose! (just barely though).
I will agree though, the newer i-VTEC isn\'t as powerful as my \'99 Si-R was. All the same though, the look of the Mazda3 and the overall \"feel\" is uncomparable to the Civic... handsdown a very fun car to drive :)
