Hi Guys, I\'m wondering if anyone could help or give me advice. I love my Mazda 3 but hate the way it drives!

I have a 2004 Mazda3 GT with Manual transmission and it has almost 14k. Ever since I got the car, I noticed that the 160 horsepower engine didn\'t really impress me. It\'s really weird because some days the car drives and shifts better then other days. Most of the time though, I feel like there isn\'t enough power to pull the car. Like there is something weighing me down. I\'ve tried shifting at about 3000rpm to 6000rpm, all with the same result. I especially notice this when shifting from first to second. It\'s like I slow down, for a few seconds while waiting for my second gear to hit it\'s power band. This can\'t be normal because I\'ve driven other Manual transmission cars including my friends Dodge SX 2.0 (Neon) of all cars, and it shifts like butter. I felt like I was driving an aoutomatic transmission while driving his car because of how smooth and powerful the shift changes were.

Another thing is that let\'s say I\'m going about 10-15 km per hour in a parking lot for example, I would expect that once I engage into 1st gear that I can stay in first as long as I maintain a little speed, without having to ride the clutch. Well if I am in 1st, and then let go of the gas for a second or two, and then accelerate quickly again, the car stumbles before it moves...it\'s like it wants more gas or oxygen or something. I have to emphasize that I am no where near the point of stalling at this point; I know the difference. I have noticed this on 2nd gear too (coasting at 20-40km). When you are driving you are not constantly accelerating, so I expect when I kick the gas, the car should speed up without any jerkiness or hesitation. I replicated all the above situations with my cousins Neon and it drove exactly how I would expect a manual transmission car to drive. I\'m really left scratching my head because I feel it\'s one of those problems that the Mazda dealership is going to try to tell me is normal, or that it needs to break in more, or to warm it up longer or whatever. I don\'t recall noticing this when I test drove the Mazda 3, although I was so excited about the way it looked I may not have even noticed.

On top of this, my gas mileage is terrible. I\'m not sure if it\'s related or not. I\'m lucky to get 360KM out of a tank of gas, and I\'m not racing the car or anything. I usually shift at about 3500RPM.

I guess I want to especially hear from other people who drive the Manual Mazda 3, and if you can relate to any of the above situations. Flipseed, I know you work at Avante Mazda, so I\'m hoping you might have some experience with this, and give some insight too. Am I expecting too much out the car?? Do you guys think this issue along with the poor gas milage could be a bad o2 sensor or gas pump. I am not technical when it comes to cars by any means, so if you guys can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Wow seems little strange...

A full tank of gas usually gets me anywhere between 550-600
Have you driven another Mazda3 with MT? Come to a GTG or take one for a test drive and see how it compares.

You may try the ETB grounding (http://torontomazda3.com/forum/read.php?TID=395) method. Some people found this smooths the shifting and got better response from the engine.

How do you calculate the milage? Just a reminder that the low fuel light comes on when there is 10-15 litres of gas left in the tank. Anyway, if the fuel light comes on at 360km, it\'s kinda too early. My 5sp GT gives much better milage on highway (~8L/100km) then city driving (~10L/100km).

BTW, Flipspeed is no longer with Avante. He\'s with Mazda of Toronto now (same location of the old Avante Toronto)

This sounds like a post I was thinking of writing.
\'
My 3 no longer has the pep it used to... I can no longer \'sqauk\' the tires 1st-2nd
and after 18000K i have yet to get over 500Km from a tank of gas. I once got close to 550Km but that was pure highway one big round trip.

same as above, I LUV my Sport GT... but the engine is making me think *Whats hawppening*

I had a similar problem with my car. I could barely get 350 km on a tank of gas. I also had trouble starting the car. The car would crank for about 10 seconds but it wouldn\'t start. After searching on this forum for similar problems I found out that the problem was the fuel pump. I took it into Westowne and they called me back an hour later and confirmed that the problem was indeed the fuel pump. 24 hours later I had my car back. I now average over 550 km on a tank of gas and no problems starting the car. Hope this helps.

I have 05 GS Auto. The thing i hate is that everytime you press the gas, it looks for the gear. the lag time is too long. Acceleration is also not instant. My rolla 01 model has more resposnsive auto tranny then my 05 M3. Low end torque is virtually non- existant.

If your still having problems with rough shifting after the fuel problem

ask for a new tranny, if they wont give it to you

get a tranny oil change + lucas\' transmission fix (<-- u can find it at can tire).

I used it on my protege, does wonders. But in hot weather, it\'ll still haunt you.

I have a 2004 M3 Sport GS, auto, and I have the same problem - intermittent sluggish shifting, especially when driving at low speed... the dealer test drove it but of course found \"nothing\"....

At first I thought it only happened when the engine was cold but it doesn\'t seem to be the case... I can\'t seem to find a pattern to it...

I have an \'04 Manual GT, and I get about 550km\'s out of a tank. However I have noticed the dip in power in first and sometimes second (especially when its hot, like yesterday:p ). I think I will try the ETB grounding. I\'ll give you an update when I do.

A couple of other thongs I noticed on my way back from the cottage:

1. My stock wipers suck...any thoughts on a good replacement pair?
2. Stoopid sunroof gave me sunburn on my head....:(
3. Windshield fogging in the bottom centre, although I think this was due to the humidity outside and the air inside.
4. and finally, I love caning it on the 400 north of Barry at night.....:p :D :)
