do you know if I can buy a oil filter kit? (since its not just filter for the 3, theres an O ring). The O ring is sure a pain in the ass, especially since I plan on changing oil @100-200KM then @1000-1250KM, then @5000km intervals

burlington mazda has oil, filter change for 26.99. its their basic deal. its always on MK. For those that paid 60+ dollars for a oil change. You got worked hard by the dealership. Mk, why not change your own oil. its actually fun, i enjoy doing mine..

Yonge Street, north of Major Mackenzie. Mazda of Toronto \"should\" charge the same price, in fact all Mazda dealers should, it\'s just that you had your tires rotated at the same time as your oil change that\'s why you were charged $60+.

Yup, when they charge you the $60 you are also getting your tires rotated. You don\'t have to accept that though, you can just get a basic oil and filter change for around $30.

I would encourage all you \"oil changers\" out there to change your oil well before 8K clicks, especially the first one. Should have your first oil change at under 1K. The recommended service intervals are not appropriate to Canadian driving conditions and are a marketing decision, NOT a technical decision. This is as applicable to the M3 as it is for ANY new car. But if you\'re not going to keep your new vehicle beyond about 3 years then it doesn\'t matter at all.:D

Do you have to purchase the filters from the dealership? Is it the cartridge filter

flyboy

I purchased my oil filter - it is a little paper cartridge with 2 \"O\" rings - for $10.99 from Avante. It took me about an hour and a half to do the first change because you have to take the undercover off (7 self-tapping screws), plus it\'s a bit more involved then simply unscrewing the regular type of oil filter we are all used to. But it is worth it. I let the oil drain for about an hour - you\'d be lucky if a dealer let it drain for 2 minutes which means they do not get all the old, dirty oil out. Plus as good as Avante is, no one cares about your car more than you do.

I replaced the oil with 5W20 semi-synthetic from Canadian Tire. All of this was done at 900 km. I think for a $25,000 dollar car investment it was worth a little over an hour of my time.

To my knowledge, only the dealer has the filter cartridge, but that will change soon without a doubt.

Just did the filter conversion from the cartridge to the spin on filter. Not hard at all. About an hour job including jacking etc. Should be able to remove the spin on filter through the large hole in the splash plate so I won\'t have to keep removing it.

Why are you all paying so much for the 8000 or 16000km service. These are juct basic oil changes. Seems like the dealership are claiming that people need extra services at these intervals to steal some more cash from people. Read your manual for the services it will tell you what you are supposed to be getting. Mazda Canada has been trying to streamline all the prices across the country so people do not get ripped off. An oil change is $26.95 set by Mazda Canada. If they charge more complain to Mazda about that dealerships pricing. The head office will return a nice nasty call to the dealer.

Some dealerships kept the price whereas others jacked it...

Basic oil change is now $35 or $36 how are you guys managing to pay over $60. Seems likes these dealers are once again charging for unnecessary services. In the 1990\'s Mazda had a problem with this and was one of the reasons they lost their customer base. You can\'t have one dealership selling at $35 and other at $50. Time for a standard price Mazda. Now as for expensive oil changes check out VW. Over $75. I have a friend that gets his VW oil changes at a GM dealership for $19.95 (just oil no major services), saves him quite abit in the long run.

My 4K oil change cost me $43.07 !!! :sarc at Downtown Mazda.

Has anyone tried Active Green + Ross and Walmart, their oil changes are cheap. What I\'m concerned is if it cost extra for the o-rings and 5w20 oil, its advertised as 10w30 and 5w30 only. And whether their service is any good.

Yeah but for the amount of gas you\'re going to blow going up there you might as well just get the oil change closer to you.

Don\'t forget dealers have the environmental disposal fee on top of the regular price.

Does the price include filter and labour? or just labour. I am asking because my last oil change at the dealer, labour alone was $17/$18. Thx

Nothing to it at all MK. You can switch whenever you want. I switched over at 8000km (2nd oil change). Some benefits of synthetic is better protection for your engine against wear & tear and also easier starts in the winter time. I use Mobil1 which is stock oil for some expensive cars so it has to be good enough for my car.

The only downside is cost...$8/L compared to the standard $2/L for dino oil.

4.5 Litres, so you buy 9 bottles of it and you have enough for two oil changes.

Then change your oil every 10,000km. If you change it earlier, you are just wasting good oil and money.

0W-20 or 5W-20 Mobil 1 will work. They are essentially the same oil, Mobil just rebranded to 5W-20 from now on so that car manufacturers and dealerships don\'t throw a fit when you bring in 0W-20 oil for a 5W-20. They are the same because the 0W and 5W is the weight at very very low temperatures which you will never come close to in the GTA, and the all the other properties are the same.

Hope this helps.

So one more question; Synthetic Oil change ever 10k. Could this POSSIBLY cause a problem if (god forbid) something is to go wrong (Knock on wood!) ie. oil sludge problems with VW/AUDI where the owners had to provide receipts that they had their oil changes done on time to have the work/parts covered under warranty?

er.. what im trying to ask is....

Syntethic = Change every 10k
Owners manual = Change every 8k

God forbid something goes wrong; Can they (Mazda/Dealership) say... \"Owners manual stated to change ever 8k.. but you changed every 10k so you are SOL\"

Went in for my first oil change at 6200 Km (4 months) at Westowne. On the phone I was quoted $29.99 but the work order had oil change, tire rotation and 8000 km service listed. I made them cross out the tire rotation since it is way too early and I will be putting on snow tires soon anyway and told them to skip the service inspection too. Well when the bill came it was $34.99 and they had done the service inspection anyway. I was a little ticked but they replaced my driver\'s side wiper that was smearing at no charge and left me a full bottle of windshield fluid in my trunk so I left a happy camper (doesn\'t take much to thrill me!!)

SABIO

Where can you get a $26.95 oil change from a mazda dealer in the west end (etobicoke or mississauga or brampton) ? The posted rate at Westowne was 34.99 (with service inspection) and over the phone, it was 29.99.

anyone got any updates on prices for Avante/MoT for 24k oil changes? My family friends have quoted that the 24k oil change @ MoT is around $200+ why? I have no clue ... can anyone of you guys who work at MoT or other places verify? And also what needs to be done? I just changed into my witner tires so no tire rotation is necessary... but what should I tell them to do and what not to do... I dont think that it should cost around $200 but thats what the invoice said from what my family friends showed my mother... anyone able to verify thx.

This is like beating a dead horse;

IMHO and a lot of 3 owners on here feel that it is not justifiable to pay that much to have them look at your brakes and lube some hinges. F that.

PS - In addition to what was stated above about synthentic voiding your warranty. I was watching Motoring 2005 and they had a segment about synthetics and they had a guy claim that it DOES NOT void your warranty. Hmmm..

Mazda has a published 34.95 (don\'t quote that exactly) service in their intersections magazine. I believe it is a national promotion. As for doing your oil changes every 10,000 km\'s....well thats not too bad, most of our customers forget to do it in the 8,000km\'s anyways. Personally I wouldn\'t let it get much higher than that if you are worried about warrenty issues. Again personally I would make sure that I had the major services done myself (ie 24k,48k,72k,96)...these are the services that Mazda really looks at for warrenty issues. As for not rotating your tires every 8000km...are you NUTS!, have you looked at the price of the tires on the Mazda 3\'s I would want to conserve the life of my tires as much as possible....both Mazda and the tire manufatures recommend it every 8,000kms....so why would a tire manufacturer want you to make your tires last longer??? Common people its only an extra few bucks to have it rotated...my dealer only charges .2 hours to rotate and believe me some of you really need it even at the first 8,000km (foot in Rad issues)

hrmm so if I do not do the 24k service and only do the oil change im stuck with the posibility of voiding my warranty for parts later on in a way? So is there no escaping the $200+ for the 24k servicing ? Is that its actual price or lower? .. im thinking of just going for the oil change(is it worth it? or just go for the 24k?) .. btw I did not purchase an extended warranty..

IN the end it is up to you...but in the grand scheme of things it might be in your best interest to have done the major services. Say something on your car breaks at 83,000kms...If you were a buisness owner would you extend some sort of help to someone who is \'just\' out of warrenty and has spent money at your buisness...probably, but what if that customer has done the \'bare minimum\'...probably not. I know if I had spent a large chunk of money on servicing my car and had (lets say) a caliper seize (that had been serviced), I certainly would want some sort of help at 82,000km. Most buisnesses would try to help somehow...I have seen it countless times at my dealer...I even saw a motor once paid for by Mazda that was 6 months out of warrenty (customer paid the labor though, but hey it was a $7,000 motor) just because the customer was such a good customer.

In the end its up to you, it is YOUR car and you have to do what you feel you can do or afford. Cars are expensive and expensive to maintain, but they are alot better than 20 years ago too.
